The Passacaglia was originally written for violin and viola by Johann Halvorsen and is based on a theme by George Frideric Handel from his Harpsichord Suite in G minor.
This piece is commonly performed on violin and cello, as well as violin and bass. We hope you enjoy our version for two basses!

That was amazing, I play viola and those are shifting and tone goals right there. I thought it was hard on viola and violin but I can't even imagine how hard it was on bass, again amazing!

THIS PIECE IS ALREADY SO DIFFICULT ON VIOLIN AND VIOLA, YET WHEN IT:S DONE ON BASSES IT LOOKS TWICE AS HARD. I MEAN, SHE PLAYS A COUPLE HIGH NOTES OFF OF THE FIGERBOARD

bassists are excellent on playing other instruments’ repertoire on their basses because they love to show off how talented they are (the same thing you play on a violin or a cello is like a hundred times harder on bass, I’m not even kidding, cellist here)

Did you tune your instruments in any different way to achieve a higher pitch? By the way, love this :)
No basses can go that high too 😊
Most solo bass playing is in “solo tuning” which is a whole step higher than the regular “orchestra tuning.” Some players or pieces may call for “high solo tuning” which is a fourth higher than orchestral tuning. I don’t know what this piece is played in but my first guess would be normal solo tuning.

If you're looking for more inspiring woman double bassists (of whom there are thankfully many more now than a decade or two ago), don't miss Valentina Ciardeli, Alessandra Avico, Lorraine Campet, Maria Krykov, Christine Hoock, Anna-Gabriele Douce, Phoebe Russell, Emelie Kuo, Nina DeCesare, Patricia Weitzel, Yung-chaio Wei, and of course Mikyung Sung! (There are many more of course, especially a lot of unknown ones from Korea, Japan, etc.) Also the String Virtuoso channel, Contrabass Conversations, Discover Double bass, and especially Bassists with Boobs (on IG/FB).
This is a dazzling performance. I am a beginner bassist and I would like to know how one of you chose to play with a French bow, and the other a German bow. I guess the French bow seems more natural, as I have never seen a violinist play with a German bow, but I practice with a German bow, since that is what came with my student bass.
Hillel Rovner Hi Hillel, thank you! The style of bow you end up using isn't always your choice, at least in the beginning. My teacher started me on French bow from the beginning, and I believe Kate was taught with a German bow. I know Kate has experimented with the French bow, but ultimately feels more comfortable with German.
I don't think one is better or more natural than the other - it seems like some people just work better with German bows and some work better with French. I've known a few people who have made the switch to a different style much later in their career.

This is beautiful! Simply amazing! How were you able to do this? I didn't think it would sound right on a double bass, but this is awesome! My brother plays the bass and I hope he can be this good. If only he would practice more lol. I, myself being a violinist have tried this piece. It takes great dedication and time to learn this piece. Time I don't have due to school and other activities. You would happen to have any tips that I could pass to by brother in order to get better would you? Again, Bravo!
The number one tip I can give your brother is this: practice! Seriously. You can't get better if you don't put the time in. After that, listen to music regularly, go to concerts, and seek out music you wouldn't listen to normally. Next, listen to your teacher - they are there to help you improve. Finally, just keep playing and have fun :)

Thank you! I read straight from the violin part and I believe Kate used the bass part adapted by Frank Proto, but I have been working on an edition with my bowings and fingerings. :)
