  • Alright, I was expecting this video to be shorter but oh well. I wanted to go over the two basic things your going to be using in the underlying structure of your drawings. I hope people find this helpful and entertaining, even though it’s kind of long. Feel free to ask questions in the comments and happy drawing! (my apologies for the video quality at some parts.)

  • @Tiny_and_Reese
    @Tiny_and_Reese Před 6 lety +20

Also a furry artist and I just want to clarify one section of the video. Usually when someone tells you to break elements of your illustration down into shapes, the intent is to simplify the features from a composition perspective, so that your eye isn't distracted by all the details, and I think volume is one of those details. The book framed ink is pretty good for breaking down an illustration into it's compositional elements.
If you're trying to create 3 dimensional space I suggest starting with the basic shape and adding in the volume later through darks and lights. Though you yourself already seem like you have a pretty great handle on this whole art thing, I think 3D space and designing should both be compartmentalized in separate sections! It has to work as a design/ silhuoette first, and it is much easier to change when in two dimensions than once you've rendered values and lighting onto it. Though... I suppose knowing when something works as a silhuoette is a complex and nebulous thing in it's own right...
Sorry the only reason I comment is because I find thinking about three dimensional volume at the same time you're designing a character or a picture, a bit overloading. And I really do like to watch people improve! I hope I didn't step on any toes or walk all over your perspective on art with my own. xD

Not only did you teach basic shapes, you taught how to *use* those shapes, and what *mindset* to use when doing so. In 10 minutes you taught me more perspective than my art teacher tried for 5 months, and with some humor to spice it up. Seriously, amazing job dude!

"Think in volumes not 2d shapes"
    My brain: *tries*
Also my brain: Wait this changes EVERYTHING
*successfully draws an arm where the forearm is facing the viewer.*
My brain: This makes perspective SO much easier
*draws the same arm but at a different angle*
My brain: If you can turn a cylinder and a box in your head then you can turn an arm in your head
    *tries to shade the arm*
My brain: Ok that didn't go so well but if i can figure out how light falls on 3d shapes I'll be well on my way.
*looks at what i accomplished, not caring that it looks like complete garbo and realizes that I've been making art WAY harder than it needs to be*
*Brain proceeds to have a meltdown when it realizes that liking the video more than once just unlikes the video*
Edit: The tip you gave about drawing form your shoulder really helped too. I need to practice to get more precise at it, but I broke my chicken scratch habit because of it.

3d light is a paon in the ass
light reflectd sime stiff dont reflect well light changes color depending on what it's bring reflected off
the best way to learn how light works ig is looking at something in harsh sun and then in various different places around your house of something or experimenting with a 3d program
or making likes from where the light source comes from and mostly ignoring light reflecting and changing colorswhich would be a pain in the ass to do and doenst really make sense unless you're going for something realistic most of the time it's fine to use dark purple or a different color that is just a colder and slightly darker for shadows and add another low opacity layer with the color of whatever main source around it and if you can you can use bloom in a few objects in a few scenarios like mirrors in sunlight neon signs bright phones in dark areas the sun as we can ser it is mostly a big ball of light so the most efficient way to draw a sun would be to just use the brush you use for bloom unless it's really close to you in which case you can draw spmething that more closely resembles an outline because in that scenario your eyes would try to adjust for the light and slso any camera snd that's something good to know if you look directly at a broght loght like if you were using the sun to burn stuff anything alroubd would look slightly darker by your eyes trying to adjust for the brighter light and cameras do that automatically as far as i know the most extreme example of this o can thing of is trying to record someonr trying to weld so vasically shadong lightning and how we react to light is a big pain to get right unless you want something that looks pretty realistic
      why did i do this?
just fucking lighting is hard i need to get better at it i need to look at stuff outside more and it could hrlp if you practiced lightining because there are very few things to do to get better at lightning and shading besides understanding how light wotks

Honestly, your art is stunning. I too often saw pictures I really like and they all had strongly colored (or no) outlines so I somehow thought I had to do the same. But you proved me that black/dark outlines can also look fantastic!
I draw for several years now but I'm kinda stuck since ~1-2 years. My outlines often just look wrong making the whole character looking not dynamic at all (more dead inside)
So if you are ever bored, I would love to have some more tips! (Especially at doing poses and not weird looking outlines (wait didn't you do that oh well))

Outside of your other videos, this is by far the most useful video on drawing I have ever seen. Even so, I would probably consider this the most helpful of the videos you've made.
As someone who has made tremendous progress over the past few years, in many ways as a result of your advice, thank you.

This was so helpful! I actually used to only draw a circle with the perspective lines, and that was about all I did to make proportions (this is a point mentioned in your beginner tips video). From then on in the drawing, I'd just draw without really putting any thought into it. I've seen this video now, and your video was very simple and easy to follow along to. I managed to make a character look a lot more natural than in my previous drawings. All of your videos thus far have really helped me as a beginner artist who is inspired by good artists like you! Keep up the good work! ^-^

I know this is going to be a long comment (on a video more than 2 years old) but I feel like this is something I have to say. It's people like you that keep people like me respecting the furry fandom. I myself am not a furry and I can't lie that I do cringe just a little when I find out someone I know is a furry. I don't immediately write them off however because of people like you. You have shown incredible self-awareness and understanding of the perception of the furry fandom and you have clearly embraced it. You have also taught me more about drawing AND given me more motivation to draw in this 30 minute video than many teachers do in a whole school year. I feel like this "Lines and Volumes" topic should be in every drawing class, especially beginners classes. If I were an art teacher I certainly would start with this. Anyway all I'm trying to say is I respect you and thank you for this fantastic video.
TLDR: This guy is a fantastic example of the good part of the furry fandom and he teaches art better than most high school art teachers.
