Hersheypark Sounds Like Fun 1988 TV Commercial

In the late summer of ’87, I directed, photographed & edited Herseypark’s “Sounds Like Fun” TV ad campaign which promoted the 1988 park season. Since northern amusement parks are closed half the year, commercials for the upcoming summer season are usually filmed before the park closes the previous season.
Shooting at Hersheypark was always fun for me and our Pittsburgh & Harrisburg based crew. Park personel were very accommodating as we moved our film equipment and crew from one crowded area to another without creating too much inconvenience for the paying park guests.
For the 3 day shoot we cast kids from the Hershey-Harrisburg area who were frequent visitors to the park. The various “roles” for the teenage actors represented high school stereotypes… We tried to assemble a cast that were talented and would have fun doing improv interactions with each other.
I shot the music driven commercial in 35mm Eastmancolor, then edited it on 1” analog broadcast videotape. This CZcams version was copied from the 1” master then upsampled to 1080P. (I’m not aware of the production company that created the music track which was pre-produced by the ad agency.)
The “Sounds Like Fun” TV campaign was created by Hersheypark’s advertising agency, McAdams, Richman & Ong, The agency team were creative director Tom Ong, associate creative director Alan Kline, writer Michael Ward, and producer Diane Olson.
Although it was filmed over 35 years ago, I believe this ad campaign would work just as well today as it did in 1988.

I remember this commercial and song and just sang it for my kids out of the blue as we are getting ready to visit in a few weeks. They asked “is that some kind of ad you’re singing” wow, that marketing department deserves a bonus for making a song that stayed in my head for 35 years. I probably saw the commercial 10 times at the most

When I was about 8 (around 1990) my family went to Hershey Park and they happened to be filming a commercial that day. They picked me to be in it and I had to bite 1 end of a hot dog while a little girl bit the other end. Still haven't been able to find that commercial anywhere! 😂😀
