    I’m at 28 lbs but I’m going hammock system. I don’t have any wool except for socks. I’ve been out hiking a lot in all this single digit temps lately and I was plenty warm without puffy. One day it was 23 and I regretted having my base layers on. We’re all different and have to figure it out for ourselves of course. I’m sure I’ll be sending stuff home like my extra under quilt and top quilt as soon as I get into warmer weather. I’ll have to get it back September probably. I was just looking at predicted temps for Georgia in April when I leave and it looks like 40 nights and 60 days. I may regret carrying winter gear right away.

      Yeah. I feel the same way. Being in New Hampshire you take winter seriously. And it seems like people are down south with light clothes on. I feel compelled to bring the extra and ship back if not needed. Better to have and not need than the other way around. The wool top that i have is super thin and soft. Not the typical wool top. It does the trick from 10 degrees to 40ish.

      Yup. they say you carry your fears on the AT, ha ha. I am sure that I'll readjust when I get through the first few weeks. I hike in New Hampshire and have to prep for the worst...so, I'm a little hesitant about ditching clothes yet. mostly through fear. ha ha. Thanks for following along. Appreciate you!

    Nice gear list. Did you go up a half or full size on your shoes? I started my 2023 AT hike wearing HOKA Speed Goats 5 size 11.5 and within 100-miles my toes were aching. Went up to 12.5 and everything was perfect. You may consider getting better shoe inserts as well. My advice for your rain jacket hood is wear a ball cap. That keeps the hood from falling across your face. As they say on the trail, hike your own hike. I started in Feb and didn't have near the amount of clothing you have so I'm very curious what your base weight is and what you think your Day 1 start weight will be. Best of luck to you.

    • @daveabbett
      @daveabbett  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes. The shoes are 1/2 - 1 size big and also the wides. I will most likely go up for the next ones mid hike. And the baseball hat is a good idea. I just don’t wear those in the winter. I’ll have to keep that in mind as it warms up. Thanks for the tips and for following along. Appreciate you.

    I love Topo shoes but the availability on trail isn't the same as Altra's or Hoka's. I'd definitely recommend a shoe with more cushioning for PA. Maybe the Altra Olympus or the Topo Ultraventure.
    I use the Forclaz jacket and it proved to be more than adequate on the AT, especially with a fleece mid layer. Great jacket for the price.

    • @daveabbett
      @daveabbett  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks Greg. I could go either way with the shoes having worn both. But definitely will look into the thicker ones for PA.
      Were you able to hike with the forclaz as long as it wasn’t raining ? Thanks for following along.

      @@daveabbett I didn't have to hike with it. I used my fleece and rain jacket as a wind shell when needed. I mostly wore it when I stopped as a warming layer.

      @@daveabbett if you get a chance to do a zero or nero in Helen, GA. I highly suggest it. Such a neat little town. That's where I was when the US shut down pretty much, lol. Had the whole town to myself. On a positive note, when I flew home from Atalanta to Austin, both airports were spookily deserted, and there were only 4 other people on my flight, lol. We had this massive plane all to ourselves, and the flight attendant kept our bellies full. Best flying experience ever haha.
      Happy Trails!

      Yeah, my wife and I were driving around down south on vacation at the beginning of the pandemic and it just got weird at rest stops for sure. oh, and you're not the first person to tell me about Helen. I will definitely hit that town for sure! Thanks for the intel.

    Great video! Looks like a great set up at just under 20 pounds. I am curious, I noticed you didnt put the quilt in some sort of dry bag, Is that common? I look forward to following along!

      @daveabbett  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks. The total weight without food and water is about 15 1/2 pounds. The nylofume liner bag will be in there. I just didn’t use it in the video. That will cover all my sleeping gear and clothes. Thanks for noticing. Appreciate you.
