    Our red eared slider laid 9 eggs June 19th outside in their habitat. 10 days short of 4 months and one is hatching. He is taking his time coming out. 4 days so far and he is almost ready to leave the shell. QUESTION: I have searched and searched for an answer ! Do you have ANY idea why one of the eggs has grown to the size of a golf ball? Actually a little bigger! Two others have continued to get larger as well. I watched her drop them from on top of a rock about 5 inches to the ground. Miraculously none of them broke and I collected them right away. I do see blood vessels in most of the eggs but why in the world would an egg itself keep getting so large?

    Thanks for the cool vid!
    How moist do aquatic turtle eggs need to stay while they’re incubating? I have 2 eggs I rescued, keeping them in moist sand but don’t know whether to cover over/slightly bury. Their bottoms are moist and the tops white/harder.
    Thanks!

      Cliche answer… it depends. Eggs dry out fast, are they in a sealed container? Is a fan blowing air over them (not good). What species is the turtle? Usually for RES, Diamondback terrapins and most turtles humid is perfect but water itself will limit gas exchange as the embryo develops. High humidity and moist sand. I bury mines half way or just above of the egg looks like it’s drying out anytime during incubation. The last half of the incubation I try to not bother anything at all. Are u using incubator?

      Thank you, that’s super helpful! I’ve moved them to a sealed container with vermiculite in a temp/humidity controlled styro cooler. A bit easier to control than the aquarium setting I had it in. Thanks again!

      @@PursuingTheKing i’m having the hardest time regulating the humidity in my DYII Styrofoam cooler. How do you do it? I keep opening the top of the Styrofoam cooler a little bit when it gets too humid in there. They are in a Tupperware container within the cooler with water at the bottom and a heater.

      I copied my reply to your other post here, thanks for being part of the Shell Squad.
      "First sign is the egg shell is usually white after a few days if fertile. Start of small red lines can usually be seen around 2-3 weeks. After 4-6 weeks the pink blood vessel lines should be easily seen from a distance. If there are no blood vessels by 2 months there is a very good chance the eggs are not fertile unfortunately. Time will tell, good luck my friend."

    my egg has this yellow viscous fluid on the outside, I assume they are leaks from inside, but there aren't any visible cracks. Is this a bad sign?

    Hy...I got 2 turtles at my home of different species. And the female laid two eggs. One egg in march and the other egg in April. I took the eggs from water and put inside some sand and kept in my home. I don't know anything about turtle egg hatching. One of the eggs have water inside but the other doesn't have it. Does it mean the eggs are dead?

    • @turtleyshelltastic
      @turtleyshelltastic  Před rokem +1

      Hard to say without a picture. I think normally there is a group of eggs. If only one egg laid possibly the turtle needs a nesting area or a nesting box or they can become egg bound.

    What’s the black line for and what do you do if the turtle keeps moving the egg

    • @turtleyshelltastic
      @turtleyshelltastic  Před rokem +1

      The black line is so I know which part of the egg was laid up. If I turn them over they will die.
