  • Here is the full game arcade wonderboy...Arcade LongPlay
Wonder Boy (also called Super Wonder Boy in Japan and Revenge of Drancon in North America for the Game Gear version) is a video game created by Ryuichi Nishizawa1 and his company Escape (later known as Westone Co. Ltd.) and released in 1986 by Sega. It is the first in a series of six games, the sequels of which will be Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, Wonder Boy in Monster World, and Monster World IV.
Originally planned for the Sega System 1 arcade system, it is ported to SG-1000, Master System and Game Gear by Sega, and to ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC by Activision.
The Wonder Boy (literally "wonderful boy") in question is a character named Tom-Tom (Bocke in the original version2), a caveman whose girlfriend, named Tanya (Tina in the original version2), was captured by a monster, Drancon. The player must lead Tom-Tom through nine "zones" each consisting of four "rounds", including some hidden levels. The last level can only be accessed if Tom-Tom has previously collected all the Tanya dolls hidden in each level.
The levels are composed of forests, hills, oceans, caverns, ice palaces, and clouds. The levels are always traversed from left to right.
Wonder Boy in Monsterland is a title "which has left its indelible mark on video game history"3: a new genre is born by the RPG dimension infused into its software with several features. Dialogue takes center stage. Two ideas will make this game a myth according to Greeg Da Silva: its level in the pyramid and its secondary quest system.
The gameplay of Wonder Boy could be likened to that of Super Mario Bros4. Indeed, Tom-Tom can run and jump over enemies but also throw axes, just like Mario4's fireballs. Wonder Boy being an arcade game, the game uses tricks to shorten the game. Among the artifices used, we can mention the life bar which gradually empties over time4. In order to slow down this decrease, the player must collect fruits and cakes on his way. however, the game also includes maluses which, hidden in eggs, will lower the player's life bar4.
Following the success of Wonder Boy in the arcade, the game was adapted for the home console4. The porting was entirely carried out by Sega4.
This version, on Master System and Game Gear, adds two new areas not present in the original arcade game.5 These include rounds in a desert, a waterfall and in the clouds.5 find a boss that throws lightning bolts instead of fireballs like in the rest of the game.5
