My area recently had a major network outage, and having Plex running on a Synology NAS with movies definitely helped pass the time while the internet was down
I tried lots of settings and still couldn't get plex to work locally without internet. Jellyfin was far easier when it comes to accessing locally

@@DlxyRekt On the flip side, Plex is far easier when it comes to accessing remotely. It's the one reason I'm still using Plex over Jellyfin. Jellyfin looks better in general and is completely opensource, which is nice. But man, I don't wanna deal with all that networking bs
Then I hope that your Synology has an Intel CPU because this one doesn't and it would suck for a lot of the transcoding codecs.
@@DlxyRektI had this same problem. It turns out that can use Plex offline, but only if you point to the server directly by IP or host name. Plex’s network discovery unfortunately relies on an internet connection which means for offline use you’re restricted to using it with a web browser. I now run Jellyfin as well on my server as my offline solution so I can still access my media without internet easily from my Shield TV. I love everything Plex provides, but their expansion of features has resulted in it feeling less and less like a proper self hosted solution.
Way out of my price range but I enjoyed the overview. I personally did a DIY which I found to be really fun. Still finding uses for it even 6 months later

This video helped a lot to explore what’s possible with a NAS. I’m currently running OpenMediaVault on a Raspberry Pi, but this video reminds me that Portainer and Docker exist for that operating system. I feel that I should take advantage of them :)
The Synology DS-920+ is pretty much the go to model. You won't be disappointed.
recently i have been getting really into nas, and your channel has helped alot. for the past few days i have watched a bunch of videos and have been wanting a nas more and more. personally id like to host a couple game servers, a free vpn (wow) a place to throw a bunch of shows and excess images and videos and so on
atm i have a fairly old laptop lying around and was deciding whether or not to turn it into a nas, but limited upgradability and having a laptop plugged in 24/7 worries me because of the hazards of the battery that could inflate. i think i may just sell it, get about 80 bucks out of it and get a basic pc
using a pi4 with an internal SSD card and external drive has been a cost-effective solution for me. Open Media Vault clutch! There also exists an option to use a pi cluster instead which has more internal drives.
I had a 34-year programming and IT career. I built some gigantic networks of computers. A few years ago, I bought a Synology 918+ for my home for a few purposes, and I’m now getting even more out of it. I am so impressed with Synology products and the value they offer. I saw your video about the DIY NAS. I could do that, too, and Synology’s added value is easily worth it for me.
Exactly. I am assuming we are of the same age based on the length of your IT career. At this stage I've done enough tinkering for a lifetime that I just want things to work with minimum hassle.

I read somewhere else about the 923 being noisy, and apparent some have taken already to swapping out the fans for ones from Noctua. Think I'd value my guarantee too much to be opening things up soon after purchase.
I've got a DS212 and DS214 at present, and was looking at the 920 or 923 as updated option. Given the price difference online here in the UK isn't massive at the moment, the 923 would seem sensible for longevity, but still keep seeing some recommending the older 920.

As much as I prefer to DIY it this is a good video. I get that not everyone wants to DIY and tinker when it comes to things like network storage and I've installed enough synology and qnap devices for other people to know they do the job well. That said synology has made some strange decisions of late which make me happy I'd roll my own, it's getting harder to recommend their low end products now a days.
My Asus LockerStor4 has been humming along fine for a little over a year. Of course I did slap 32GB of RAM in it as well as 2x 1TB M.2 drives and 4x 4TB drives. And I did have to hand-upgrade the Docker and Portainer software on it directly from the developers. And you can't really run a lot of Docker containers on it or Docker will just crash for some odd reason. But you can hand-install ZeroTier on it to be able to securely access it from anywhere on the planet. That's what I do when I'm on the road and want to access my Plex and Calibre libraries.
Now it's mostly just used for Calibre & Plex and file storage and as a backup target drive for my 4-server XCP-NG vHost cluster which does all the heavy container and VM lifting now.

I geek out on this stuff. haha Started out using my DS218+ for file storage and Plex, but after taking my video business more seriously and recording ProRes on my Ninja V, I upgraded to a DS418 for file storage and the DS218+ for Plex. I love Synology products and will continue using them.

Does it provide enough softwares to backup folders and such from ”distance”?
I mean have the NAS running at home and automaticly take periodic backups on work for example?
Question: when setting up a VPN from your own NAS (regardless of NAS manufacturer) does that cost you?
is the 920+ still available? I currently have one for surv station and home automation/plex server. However I am upgrading to 22 cameras with our new house and worried about too much load - I want to get another one but it MUST have transcoding for what i use it for.
Have to go the DIY route, these things are sooo expensive here in Brazil

I have the older DS920 model, and yeah I was pissed I couldn't really stream media off of it.
There are (Realtek RTL8152) 2.5 GbE USB Ethernet adapter drivers for Synology NASes on Github, and the next SMB release will support SMB multichannel (currently in beta), with the two built-in 1 GbE ports combined providing almost the same data rate as a single 2.5 GbE port.

I was going to buy a NAS box like this, but I'm so glad I didn't! For the same amount of money, or even FAR less, I bought a Norco 20 bay 4U rack mount chassis for $175 and threw in an old i7-4790K motherboard and CPU I had laying around, then I installed UnRAID OS on it to make it a NAS. Now I have an awesome NAS with tons of expandability that also runs VM's and Docker containers. I also installed a 10 Gbps network card in it. DIY is always better if you have the know-how. You could easily make this a low power system by using a different motherboard and CPU combo, or make it a much more powerful system by using more recent components, and everything will always be upgradable, unlike an off the shelf NAS box.
“DIY is always better if you have the know-how”. This applies to basically everything. I usually do DIY when it comes to tech, but with other things, I just want something that works.
Have you have much experience using the Toshiba HD's? How do they perform? When I was researching my NAS the two most popular options were the WD red and Seagate Ironwolf. I decided to go with the Ironwolf because the reviews seems more positive for them.
They seem to be slightly louder but no issues so far!
I was strongly considering the 923+ as a replacement for my aging 1512+. To Synology's credit, my 1512+ is still going strong after nearly 10 years, but my luck can't last forever. However, they're making some really confusing decisions, and I just can't get behind this device. Synology has always charged more money for a premium experience, and their hardware has always lagged behind, but using 1GbE at this point is criminal. And the new CPU is faster at some things, but consumers of this device, I suspect, are more interested in transcoding than running a ton of simultaneous containers. Add to that their lack of support for any NVMe drives other than their own overpriced devices, and this unit really just doesn't make sense to me.
I'm disappointed to say that, because I really wanted to like it. And to buy it. Asustor has some very compelling hardware, but unfortunately their software support falls a bit flat. My decision at this point has been to continue milking my 1512+, move media serving to an external device, and try to wait a couple more years for QNAP and Asustor to step up their software game or Synology to step up its hardware game.
Yeah I completely understand your predicament. Maybe consider the DIY route if you have the time and money
My DIY NAS was a awful trash built system and when it failed I decided to move to an old Dell r710. Using a rackmount server as a NAS is AWESOME, but the power draw is crippling. If it wasn't for the fact that it also hosted a Satisfactory server, Minecraft server, DNS sinkhole, a Nextcloud instance, and Jellyfin it'd be stupid.

could you say, have a steam library on the nas to copy from? i have multiple people that visit with gaming laptops and we have a data cap because of comcast. would they be able to basically download games from the nas locally?
You could either just manually copy game file to your NAS and then copy them over to a new machine, or you could also Google how to setup a steam cache server. I’ve never done it but have seen plenty of people do it for the exact reason you mentioned.
Great overview. I really don’t understand what Synology was thinking when they released a SOHO NAS that does not have a GPU, integrated or otherwise. Plex/Jellyfin etc. are a primary use for a home NAS, and pre-transcoding media to avoid h.265 is not an acceptable solution. My only conclusion is that Synology is giving up on the home user market. And lack of 2.5GbE is simply not defensible.
I definitely feel like this is marketed towards small business rather than the home market. But that makes the lack of mGb even stranger haha.

for me best option is diy nas, I have on it samba, Pihole, openvpn, motion, ngrok. I'm using thin client igel d220 20cm cable for disk and HDD 320GB. server get 3-6W from mains

If you think Surveillance Station is good, you need to try Blue Iris for home surveillance. It’s SO much better.

Surprisingly I wasn’t a huge fan and preferred SS, however that was a while back. Maybe it’s changed over the last 2 years
@@HardwareHaven Blue Iris was definitely intimidating at first, I used surveillance station for a while on a very slow NAS and got sick of it. So moving over to Blue Iris and being overwhelmed with 1000s of settings to tweak it was a bit much at first. But the AI integration is really fun to play around with. And the pricing is so much more competitive vs other offerings

@@HardwareHaven there is a paid mobile app, but it’s developed by a different team. I personally just use chrome on mobile and access the web server. You can either access it via VPN or you can expose it on the web with a Dynamic DNS. You can check all cameras and alerts, and scrub through footage instantly.

I had a file server that went to crap (not the hard drives). I went to a Synology, it's very turn-key. I'm a programmer, but some-times, computer stuff is just a massive pain and something that works is nice. (I had setup my old computer as a file server etc etc. raids and all that. I had used my own file server for years, and after trying to keep it up for years, the fucking thing died, and I had no idea why? I was changing out the fans for big server pusher fans, and that apparently killed the entire thing. I would probably set up the server again, but I haven't bought a new computer lately either so I have no spares to make a new file server.
I'm thinking about using it as a portfolio website server (I'm using it as a DNS with pi-hole so that's nice) but I don't think that would be a grand idea with something public facing. (the whole public facing stuff is a mystery to me, I doubt it would be good. I managed a website/forum before on my own account via another web-server and it got hacked, and well, it always got hacked again. (I'm sure it's the hosting company's fault, but, I got ghosted.) Plus I would have no idea how to fix the: "lol you got hacked by the turks" stuff.

There are a few articles and I guess now a response from Eufy. A Google search of “eufy security flaws” nets plenty of results

Are there NAS devices that allow you to retrieve data in a neutral form? A true cloud environment, where it doesn't matter the operating system. Where if I save data in a windows format, I can still open it up using a MAC format... In essence a way to pull data and have it translated into a form that MAC or Windows can read. Only thing I could think of is using HTM format.
Cloud has nothing to do with file formats. Cloud just means "saved on someone else's storage on the internet". What program(s) are able to read the data and what OS's support those programs are a totally different thing.

Hardware is a i5 cpu 1660gpu an 16gb ram multiple hard drives.
Yep, and there are tons of ways to do it. You can check out my unraid video, where I do basically that but with a terraria server, however there are options for MC servers as well. There’s also a “ultimate server” video I did a while back, but that uses an inferior mc server method. There’s a dedicated MC server video on my channel as well that you could use instead

Mr hardware haven i need your help, a few days ago I saw a short which featured an 2.5 inch (9.5 inch ver) hhd enclosure which had both a sata+data and a usb 3.0 port at the back also it was hot swappable drive after like 15-16 searches i was able to find a name- drive cartridge

Usually those are just called USB Drive Enclosures or something like that. I'm not sure of what exact model you're referring to though, sorry!

Sure there are some peculiar HW decisions, but it seems the choice of chipset has to do (besides cost) with ECC memory. People seem to forget time is money. NAScompares has a video on what you save $$$ with DIY. In the lower tier it's negligible especially if your time is valuable. Plus the best hardware in the world sucks if you don't have proper software. DSM 7.2 seems to be a big upgrade...that's the main reason to stick with Synology.

I don't think the The DS923+ is intended for home users. It seems to me that synology are shifting the DS9+ models, that used to be the "upper tier" home user models, to the low end business user market! I don't think i like that! Maybe they will do a DS42x+ with gpu for us in about 6 years! 🤨

I’ve got the 920+ and put an extra 16GB RAM in it for a total of 20GB.
Bays 1-3 are 3TB HDDs, bay 4 is a separate volume with a. 500GB SSD which I use exclusively for VMs.
Windows runs great on it. I’ve even bought a USB to dual HDMI adaptor which I “passthrough” to my windows 11 VM. That means the NAS itself is physically connected to two monitors and with a wireless keyboard/mouse (also passthrough), it means the DS920 effectively functions as a physical PC.
FYI - officially the DS920+ only supports an additional 4GB of RAM for a total of 8GB but there’s online resources where 16GB modules are verified by the community as compatible. In fact, I contributed to it myself with an Offtek module. The NAS actually has built in RAM testing functions. You must run a very long (6+ hrs ) test before the NAS produces a report on whether or not it’s fully compatible.
Hence, it’s just trial and error by the community. But there are maybe 10 or so 16GB modules from various manufacturers that ARE compatible. And trust me, if you’re running a couple of VMs and a vDSM as well (I do for Plex and VPN for Download Station), you’re going to want 20GB.
Should have had 2.5 gig network at a minimum. Also could have dropped esata as I know no one who ever used it

Assuming you have a managed switch that supports that as well as mGb, otherwise you’re still limited to 1Gb on any given connection
@@HardwareHaven I have a 420+ and have bonded the nic's. One of the options when setting it up is a choice if you do not have a managed switch.

"more than just nas" - sorry, but this can only be said about QNAP NAS, because for a longer period of time the QNAP offers much better HW with wider usability and better SW options.

@@HardwareHaven What I mean is that if you have been using QNAP for e.g. last few years, you could clearly say that QNAP NAS is more than just a NAS. In general, compared to Synology, their HW is more powerful and the NAS is usable on a wider scale. For example, QNAP NAS can be used as a multimedia center thanks to HDMI (or moreover like surveillance centrum with direct connect via HDMI, where is 8 cameras for free as basic), or as a powerful PC thanks to GPU pass-through support (I myself use one QNAP as a powerful gaming PC), features like encrypting entire volumes or using M.2 NVMe modules for very fast data volumes (ideal for VMs etc), 2,5Gbe (and higher), Thunderbolt, OS is really cool (ZFS is best of best), and a lot more, these are things we've been using with QNAP for years.
By the way, the MARS app for backing up/restoring or migrating WordPress sites (the app also offers Google Photos backup) is another cherry on top.
I’m not saying that any of that isn’t true, and in most cases I wouldn’t recommend Synology. But I think they still have a product that makes sense for a lot of people. I would say generalizations like saying a Synology can’t be more than just a NAS isn’t helpful for anyone
I have mixed feelings about Synology... they have great software but very bad ratio hardware/price. I would personally only recommend it if you are a very basic home user
Or just anyone that doesn’t have the desire or time to dig into the weeds of deploying your own server

Agreed! Most of my content is geared towards diy and free software solutions, but that doesn’t mean there’s zero value to something like a Synology, at least for certain people. For you, something else makes a lot more sense and that’s great!
why has no one strapped 4-5 mini-computers into an array with giant drives attached to each. why do no mini-computers have giant drives? doing this seems to be the best server with the best redundancy. if your power supply is bad on that Synology, the whole thing is dead. With a mini-computer array if any part is bad/broke, it doesn't matter because because each drive is a part a complete mini-computer.
A: Power Draw
You could achieve a similar outcome with a primary system and an on-site backup without having a lot of waste by having each drive on an individual system.
B: Latency
Communication standards between individual systems don’t come close in terms of bandwidth and speed that standards like PCIe, SATA, SAS, etc. so having the drives on one system in something like a ZFS pool can drastically improve performance of spinning drives.
Probably other reasons but that’s my take at least

Yeah, and go sell a kidney for the proprietary hardware that you have to buy from Synology if you need upgrades, especially memory and network card, this goes immediately above 1000 USD, this is another wanna be apple.
Obviously there are trade offs, and this probably makes less sense if you’re happy to build and deploy your own server. Also, I don’t think the memory is proprietary, although I haven’t attempted an upgrade.
@@HardwareHaven As a small taste 32GB of Synology memory costs 750 EURs ( 800 USD ) more than the NAS itself, as I said they are a wanna be Apple, spite, I don't think they care anymore they are now focus on the enterprise business, just stay away from this guys.

@@HardwareHaven Yes you can, but you lose immediately the warrant if anything happens to the NAS.
I think I'm 2023 at that price point it's bad s*** crazy not to have dual 2.5GbE and an Intel CPU for transcoding acceleration. The AMD will absolutely will come to its knees with several different transcoding codecs.
The only thing that technology will understand is if no one buys this insanely overpriced piece of junk!!!
refurb pc value is more than any commercial nas on mkt - go dumpster dive and save yourself 1k plus have more options
