In June 1961 I entered the Royal Canadian Navy and did my basic training at HMCS Cornwallis. One of more than 200 kids who began less than 50 finished. I was 17 and I was one of those who became a member of a proud tradition. More than 50 years later I am still proud of what I did back then and proud of the MEN I served with! Looking at these young people in this video I wonder , was I ever that young? My god but I would give anything to see some of my old shipmates again. READY , AYE READY !!
Well done, folks! Much more complex procedure than mine when I passed out at Raleigh in Class 413 in 1961. Lee Enfield 303 rifles, more wieldy but less complicated routine to drill with those (No changing sides, and butt down on the floor when at ease - mind you, we DID have "ground riflres" to contend with...). Only solely electrician class to win the Cock Trophy before that time, yet our routine was so much simpler than this one - and we didn't have to worry about clashing with another class!
Passed out in 1966, had to watch England winning the world cup, C P.O. Jim Reeves was our instructor. Mike Appelby was our team Leader ex tank commander. Ah great days.
Thanks for this. I passed out from Raleigh in 1967 (Drake 44 class) -c/o PO Storer and GI Wiggy Bennett - the one and only day I did something that made my parents proud!
I know its a cliché But it makes me so proud that there are people out there who in spite of everything go "No F++k It I will do something useful with my life" Love Tom
My passing out was at Ganges in 1975, POGI Archibald was my instructor, met up with him many years later on Minerva. Totally different chap from Ganges days', but it was his job to make men out of boys, which he certainly did achieve!
Passed out in 73. When my class turned into line to March past the flag pole, the band started playing Liberty Bell. I don't know how we all didn't crack up.
We also had two guards when I was there 1972. Biggest regret was leaving RN after just over 7 years. If I could go back to being 16 I'd do it all over again. I still have my Nos 1s, 7 creases in bell bottoms but can't get them past my knees now!
Brings back memories, passed out at HMS Raleigh in 1974,was in Anson division ,in the old wooden huts, when on to HMS Sultan to do Marine Engineering, many thanks for sharing that video, enjoyed them days:)
I was there in 73 and went to Sultan, to my deepest regret I never completed part 2 training. I was 15 and home sick! Nearly went back in 76 but joined the Police and did 30 years but I always stop and think ,on the 13 of March every year, what if.
i think they did us proud i passed out In 76 two guards and again In 1981 after leadership course 3 guards then i passed out several times in Union Stasse and even more In Pompey
Ah, brings back memories of May 1983. Guest of honour, the First Sea Lord Admiral John Fieldhouse with full RM band. As the "Class Leader" of my class it was the proudest day of my life so far. Does anyone remember the Gunnery Officer, Lt. "shovelface" Andrews? he scared the shit out of me, I was 23 years old and had previously worked in a scrap metal yard and as a builders labourer, so I wasn't exactly a shrinking violet, but he was one hell of a guy believe me.
Not many passing out. I passed out long time ago joined October 79 with my Brother the parade ground was bursting at the seams. Wish I 'd stuck it out left the Navy in Feb 86 . My last ship was HMS Endurance loved every minute on her. Good luck to you and your mates, stay safe ,have fun. And stick it out. Take care . Bj
Lyrics Heart of Oak David Garrick/Dr. Boyce, 1759 Come cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer, To add something more to this wonderful year, To honour we call you, not press you like slaves, For who are so free as the sons of the waves? Heart of oak are our ships, Jolly tars are our men, We always are ready, Steady, boys, steady, We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.
Ah memories. I passed out there, as part of the guard, in February 1991. Do you still get to party at the Carbeille? Our inspecting officer was Lt. Gen. Sir Henry Beverley, Royal Marines Commandant General. And then on to the RNSS. Good effort Smudge, good effort shipmate.
Not just that. That's usual patrol boats that do that. The bigger ships like queen elizabeth witch I now currently serve on we go around the world and give support against rebels that make attacks like b tech taiban. We also are first responders of a war starts
when my uncle (Scots Guards) was stationed in Portsmouth in about 1938 he used to amuse his evening by going into jolly tars pubs and turning their pint glasses over, suffice to say he never lost a fight
@richardvp1 I see your point. What was I thinking when I didn't tell the parade staff about the ridiculousness of two guards. And why oh why didn't we, the recruits who had been in for just 9 weeks, tell the Captain he wasn't up to RN standards.
hiya mate, just wondering what software you used to get your passing out video onto here? i passed out on the 14th june this year and would like to get mine on here as well if possible. if you could help that would be great. cheers
Aye, just play the game. Basic training is all about bullshit. You'll get a lot of it. Just do what they say, when they say and never complain! They want to see you put in max effort in everything. Basic training is nothing like the real navy. It's 9 weeks of bullshit to push you to your limits, but you'll get an amazing career out of it. Good luck with your training.
b jones I was just in front of you aug 79 only 18 out of 32 passed out I had a bunch of mummy boys in my class who could,nt hack it being away from mamma lol
Don't care what ye says , Jennies in square rig just don't look right. And surely it is one guard, formed by one division with an East and West wing.. And it's nice to see a mere passing out parade doesnt interfere with sports. And where did all those trees come from. They were not there in 76. ;o)
I can still remember my passing out in 1969 I was in Benbow and if I had my time over again I would be in there, lots bull but they have to build you up to work as one.
I hope you got bloody good medical attention. Something's wrong when our servicemen and women are randomly passing out all over the place! Time to call in the doctors, or else get some fresh meat into the services.
THE 1952 BOYS AND OFFICERS ALL HAD THEIR HAIR CUT SHORT. WHO CARES HOW MANY GUARDS??? AS LONG AS WE LEAVE THAT ""JOINT""" AND GET BACK TO SANITY.........OLD SALT....

My time in the Navy was the mosy miserable time of my life, was amazed anything got done its a social club for the officers.
I know its a cliché
But it makes me so proud that there are people out there
who in spite of everything
go
"No F++k It I will do something useful
with my life"

hms ralegh i was a marker in parades ans a sharp shootin me 2
Most world navies uniform is modeled upon the Royal Navy's as they were the first to introduce a standard uniform.

Mine was in 79 at Raleigh as the Guard (Cunningham 43) brings back memories
Well done young man. I left the RN after 28 years and still remember Raleigh. Cunningham 42.
I was in Drake 08 1992

I passed out April 1992 . x
Benbow40 1988. Those were the days.
Proud to be BRITISH - may Britannia prevail and her enemies fail.
+ellis sinnott Wrong, the Royal Navy board ships and do drug busts and anti-piracy.
Imagine nelson with a mg, just John Ramboing it XD
Not just that. That's usual patrol boats that do that. The bigger ships like queen elizabeth witch I now currently serve on we go around the world and give support against rebels that make attacks like b tech taiban. We also are first responders of a war starts
WELL DONE
I was Pellew 30 92 Guard
For me it was 1964. Then off to Vernon for TAS training.
I was ships company around 1970
the uniforms really looks like the belgian uniform from the royal sea cadets .
natascha keppie probably adapted the uniform from the Royal Navy like many other navies have.
I did this in 1962,no RM's then just the Parade Ground Chief GI and god help you!
I also but in 1963.
when my uncle (Scots Guards) was stationed in Portsmouth in about 1938 he used to amuse his evening by going into jolly tars pubs and turning their pint glasses over, suffice to say he never lost a fight
@Robert Dunn I would fight you for that.
@richardvp1
I see your point. What was I thinking when I didn't tell the parade staff about the ridiculousness of two guards. And why oh why didn't we, the recruits who had been in for just 9 weeks, tell the Captain he wasn't up to RN standards.
Come cheer up me lads to the tavern we steer, to have us some more of that wonderful beer. To the PO's we toast and the snotties we jeer...

National Emblem, by Bagley (often incorrectly attributed to John Philip Sousa)
good to have lines painted to get their dressing

And that's possibly the only time the navy will ever hold a gun
ellis sinnott It's called a rifle, not a gun. Guns have wheels.
Royal Navy Commandos?
Reading "Das Boot" - the book, not the lazy movie. U Boat men had an immense respect for RN ships. Detail.
The first was Hearts of Oak I did it in 1973 then as a Killick in 1978
Changed a bit since I last visited
That parade ground is looking somewhat sparse, and since when do you wear 8s on a parade square, class 2 1980.
Should have seen it in 1970 it was rammed mate and your right no number eights only number one's or twos if you had only been in a couple of weeks .
b jones I was just in front of you aug 79 only 18 out of 32 passed out I had a bunch of mummy boys in my class who could,nt hack it being away from mamma lol
Come back Ganges.All is forgiven
@Buck11266 No, sorry. It's 'Hearts of Oak.'

Don't care what ye says , Jennies in square rig just don't look right. And surely it is one guard, formed by one division with an East and West wing..
And it's nice to see a mere passing out parade doesnt interfere with sports.
And where did all those trees come from. They were not there in 76. ;o)
in time on somble good effort correct , bloodey effort
Just shows were not getting many through. When i passed out in 1997 was 100s.
Why 2 guards now????

Any one joining HMS Raleigh on the 28th of Feb?
I can still remember my passing out in 1969 I was in Benbow and if I had my time over again I would be in there, lots bull but they have to build you up to work as one.

I hope you got bloody good medical attention. Something's wrong when our servicemen and women are randomly passing out all over the place! Time to call in the doctors, or else get some fresh meat into the services.
ppl playing sport on a passing out parade day what kind of navy is this
One that would risk there life's to defend Britain
+Brad b sorry chap,hms ganges 1971-72 then 1972-86 before leaving r.n and a trip to falklands,
Obvious that they don't get taught drill
Typical army banter! Not that you'd know!
Obviously the Belgians copied the British uniform.
Oh dear oh dear far to much tick tocking
Poor guard performance
THE 1952 BOYS AND OFFICERS ALL HAD THEIR HAIR CUT SHORT. WHO CARES HOW MANY GUARDS??? AS LONG AS WE LEAVE THAT ""JOINT""" AND GET BACK TO SANITY.........OLD SALT....
