- In 2012 with the launch of the new Littlest Pet Shop cartoon series LPS toys saw an extreme redesign that caused an awful lot of outrage from collectors which spawned the hashtag #BringBackTheOldLPS !
Fast forward to January 2024 with Basic Fun relaunching the titular plastic toys, I thought now more than ever would be the perfect time to revisit this controversy but also look at it from a retrospective lens.
I'm a HUGE fan of LPS as you can tell from my previous videos talking about them but they are very sentimental for me because LPS are partly why I started even began making videos of my own on CZcams. This relaunch has been a bit disappointing but nevertheless really cool to see them finally back after all these years.

just wanted to clarify i bought the new LPS before information came out about basic fun potentially supporting israel (which they are currently receiving backlash for)
they’ve been really radio silent in general if you look at their instagram comments not even addressing fans concerns regarding their pre-orders like that just got delayed last minute..
so buyers please beware now more than ever we have to be cautious of where our money goes ! FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸 & i hope they can do better…

The autistic experience of enjoying the same things you do as a child and bringing these interests into adulthood and being mocked for it…until actually now it’s Nostalgic and everybody is into it again! I agree it sucks to grow up feeling alone and weird but it’s been nice to see all sorts of comfort brands/items be brought back! Even if part of me is still a little mad I was harassed as a kid.

When I was around 10, my aunt came over and told me I needed to clean up my toy area. What I didnt know is that she'd end up donating my ENTIRE FUCKING LPS COLLECTION WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. Im genuinely so sad about it, so when I find survivors in my childhood home here and there I can feel my inner child smile.

Yikes! My parents in the contrary didnt want me to get rid of them under ANY circumstances because they knew that I would regret it someday. They were right. Im now 25 and I keep on growing my collection and I am SO GLAD my parents protected my stuff from my teenager mind
most of my collection was donated too! luckily not all of them, but the majority of my first gen lps.

There were several!! The two I remember playing the most as a kid was the short lived LPS VIP browser game back when I was about 7-8, and LPS Online (another browser game) a couple years later after VIP shut down

The "new LPS" have some pretty great concept art. They definitely work better on paper than in life. I totally could have seen them being sold to an older audience as "vinyl figures" or something instead of replacing the beloved established style.

I’m surprised that a lot of people didn’t like the hub littlest pet shop show??😭 I loved it so much as a kid (mainly for the biscuit twins and the pets themselves) and the music was so good. I didn’t like the toys but the show was definitely one of my favs as a kid. Also off topic but I love how Lula puts things in her background or does an outfit based on the video topic.

As an autistic kid, I sold all my childhood lps when I was 13 because everyone else around was getting rid of there toys, and then when I turned 15, I regretted everything, and now I'm currently recollecting lps.

5:52 i do remember the magnets getting dirty but this one instance will never leave my mind. I had a destiny cat (still have her to this day) and there was always this weird black.. plastic thread type thing almost resembling a spider leg or something. It stuck to her neck CONSTANTLY and no matter how many times i washed it off it would almost ALWAYS come back. not a god damn clue what it was, but she doesnt have that anymore.

The 2012 pets definitely had a lot of issues, especially with the designs not being translated very well from the concept art and a lot of them not being able to stand that well. But honestly, I don't think they're as bad as most people treat them as, and some of them I would even say look quite good. If those designs had been released as a different brand, or just a special edition thing alongside more of the original LPS, then I could have seen them finding an audience. They just weren't what anyone really wanted from LPS though, so the backlash was understandable, if a little extreme.
i agree! i really like the concept art it would’ve translated better if these were vinyl limited edition figurines or something then maybe they would’ve found an audience
i also think if hasbro actually designed their toys instead of the plain color palettes with a singular graphic.
The concept art is really cute and I wouldn’t have hated them as a kid if it wasn’t for the fact they replaced the old ones, that’s where they went wrong
As a kid I loved them just as much as the older pets and I enjoyed the following redesigns and show as well
I loved the LPS cartoon as a kid, and my sister didn't like it because of the cast's tacky voices.
One thing that stuck out to me about the show was the amount of musical numbers it had.
There were a lot of songs, some good and some mediocre. (We're The Littlest Pets, Humanarian, and Sweet Shop for a few examples)
But my favorite song of them all was "Wolf-I-Fied!".
The song was about Sunil (the mongoose) and Vinnie (the gecko) imagining a worse-case scenario where the rest of the pets have become werewolves, and are seen fleeing from said werewolf counterparts.
Crazily enough, that actually got me into werewolves as a kid.
Yep. You'd think it'd be something cringier like Twilight, but nope. It just had to come from LPS of all things.
Here and there I'll get the idea to draw some of my favorite characters as werewolves, though most of the time I don't finish really because of regrets halfway into the drawing.
To this day, I still unironically listen to Wolf-I-Fied on repeat. It's a banger song.

This video and the release of g7 has me screaming, crying, and frothing at the mouth wanting to collect more again! I am 24, and I still have my more than 200+ collection of LPS pets and sets. I dipped right around/before the release of G3. I'm glad that they are going back to their roots of what was more of what everyone adored. My special interest in LPS has risen once again! 💖

The mommy and baby series is crazy cause i had forgotten about lps completely and happened to walk into a toys r us at night and saw them hanging on a display, i thought it was new old stock! It was like a dream. I got the tiger but im kicking myself for not keeping it in the packaging. 😭
I remember feeling ashamed for still being into little kid toys and shows, esp lps since it was my all time fav since kindergarten at the age of 15 because I felt like I was weird yk since ppl my age (not all) aren’t really into those things anymore. Im 16 now and idgaf anymore. The corner of my room is filled with kid toys related stuff and I love it sm. My little sister who is turning 10 in April is also collecting LPS now too
About quitting an interest because of peer pressure, I had the exact same thing with bakugan. I got picked on for liking “boy things” so I stopped… now I have an entire collection of old and new bakugan

I love LPS since 2020. And ngl, ever since watching A World Of Our Own, I admire the art style of the show and is one of my biggest inspirations for my art. You should definitely watch a couple of more episodes from that show. Excellent video btw, I’m very happy that LPS is back!

hearing you talk about seeing the shell of what lps once were literally made my heart wrench. It's exactly how I felt when I'd get them on Christmas or my birthday but I'd always pretend to be happy. Seeing you open them gives me hope to see them in an isle soon. I'll probably cry tears of joy cuz im healing such a part of my inner child that she never thought she'd be able to experience 🥲.
As someone who mainly followed Littlest Pet Shop through the 2012 series (as you can see by my username and profile picture, I'm a big fan), I had no idea there was this kind of controversy involving the merchandise. I don't particularly mind the look of the LPS show given how Wildbrain (formerly known as DHX Media until they became Wildbrain in 2019) used a similar look for My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, Pound Puppies 2010, and seasons 3-4 of Transformers Rescue Bots.
As for the look of Littlest Pet Shop: A World Of Our Own, I would assume it's because of Boulder Media using similar animation tactics to other projects they animated, such as Transformers Rescue Bots Academy and My Little Pony: Rainbow Road Trip. I think the reason the 2018 LPS show didn't last as long as the 2012 show is because of Hasbro's 2017 theatrical movies. Both Transformers: The Last Knight and My Little Pony: The Movie didn't do as well financially as Hasbro hoped, and any Hasbro project that wasn't Transformers or My Little Pony related (such as Stretch Armstrong And The Flex Fighters and Hanazuki: Full Of Treasures) was treated poorly and cancelled.
I still really like the g3 lps that I had as a child, they were bright and spikey, which matched my aesthethics, at least they didnt have stupid expressions that limited my imagination like g4 did and they also didnt feel as if they were made out of eraser material and their heads didnt feel like those erasers that can't erase anything to the touch, unlike g4

Ive always loved lps, at my preschool, there was a big display with a bin or two of lps and play sets and they were always my favourite toy (along with mlp). I even named my first roblox account after my first favourite lps,(#126) which I named Queen Tallah. I was pretty sad knowing that they changed the lps style and would probably never change them back again,but the old style of lps is back! I was so glad when I found out that Lps was bought by basic fun and theyve revived the old lps style as well as bringing a roblox game. Ive been searching everywhere for them but I’ve only had luck finding 2 sets. (I didn’t know where to put this in cause it’s very random, but I remember breaking into my cousins basement and taking her lps

Well after watching a few videos about it i can see why everyone hated g3 lps so much like the designs are cool but the shape of the toy and the quality is bad

I’m so old, I don’t even remember gen 3, though in retrospect it’s definitely the reason I stopped buying them. I still love LPS but I can’t afford to start another toy collection 😭 the plushies in the background make me so nostalgic

my lps addiction came back late 2023 and i couldn’t be more happy! at first i felt really embarrassed- but as i kept collecting, i stopped caring what people thought!
I wish i found out about your channel sooner also have lps as one of my spintrests and a collector since i was 2 (im 19 now) oh my goodness loved this video sm and your channel as a whole seems right up my alley im definitely subscribing.
I do want to mention some things about the lps roblox game actually since ive been playing it alot. So the rhino you got isnt in the game yet. The only designs in the game are all 18 of the blind bag pets. I have yet to aquire any g7 pets in person but im pretty sure the codes for the blindbags give pets while others give gems and coins (please correct me if im wrong anyone 😭). The game you play it mainly by collecting pets and having them do activities its very much so one of those grinding games. Each world so far (only 3 atm excluding the town/tutorial world) has a pod and 6 pets available in each pod. You earn coins by making your pets do activities and they gain levels by playing and the higher your pet's level (so far according to the lps roblox game discord the highest level for pets is 50) is the more coins you get. The coins so far are used to buy the ugc items as well as more pods to try to get more pets. Theres gems as well which can be used to buy accessories for your pets as well as other upgrades including more backpack space, a farther play radius pets can go much farther from you to do activities, those boosts (these ones now with the new gift feature added aren't worth it) like the coin one you got, more pets equipped to follow you, and an auto play button for the whole pet party to grind. Speaking of accessories from before there are some free ones hidden around the map and ones you can unlock with achievments. Also you can name your pets as well. When you click the panda icon on the left side it will show you your pet backpack and next to the pet icon theres a little pencil and you can click that to change your pet's name. Clicking you pet icon not near an activity gives you options as well inclusing pet details in which clicking that gives you a customize button and thats how you place accessories on your pet. I have almost 3 million coins and almost all 18 of my pets are at level 50 (i just have one of each its pretty easy to get them all atm). Game's a bit confusing at first and yes it crashes so so so much but i like putting it idle while watching video essays like this one :]
I’m 22 and autistic too (ayeee!) and I loved lps so much. Recently I was cleaning out my family’s attic and actually found my old collection. I literally have some of the gen1 ones (the magnetic ones) and it’s insane 😭 I started displaying them in my room because of it :)

As someone whose been collecting old lps for a number of years with little succession the new release of lps has gotten me pretty hyped, mainly because when i was a kid i never got the experience of actually receiving brand new pets (i didn’t know they existed and my mom didn’t like buying trendy stuff
it’s so cool and crazy to see CZcamsrs my age making videos like this!! Like we seriously experienced very similar childhoods. I feel like I’m still expecting the people I watch online to be older than me lol.
in retrospect i don’t *loathe* the designs from the 2012 redesign era (and the cartoon’s pretty decent in my opinion), i just wish they weren’t the only lps toys on shelves at the time

i had the exact same experience as you -- i had an lps channel, a huge collection (500+ pets and most houses, lots of plushes, and other trinkets), but at 12-13 i gave up on them entirely to fit in. i unfortunately also sold most of my collection and never had the motivation to start collecting again (especially since they've gotten expensive !!)
with the 2023 release coming to store shelfs i plan on buying at least a few. this is what younger me would've wanted.

I used to love the littlest pet shop. I especially liked the one I had that had a soft texture. It was like a fuzzy spider. Also, I missed the magnets after they went away. I used to stick those things everywhere.

I’ve been in love with lps my entire life and I never got to post when I was little but I felt very closely with feeling I needed to get rid of that part of me to fit in and be “normal” my entire middle school career had me pushing them but now I’m back and in better than ever and even started my lps account just for fun 😊

I remember when this movement happened! I was pretty young, so I don't even remember being that outraged about the redesign at first. I did go through a brief phase where I started to miss the old LPS and hated the newer gens, but that was only because there were a ton of older gen pets that I wanted but never got, and plus the movement eventually got to me. I got past that phase eventually, and I still love pretty much all gens of LPS. I even have the goal of getting at least 1 LPS from every generation. The only pets I don't have yet are the Gen 7 ones. Of course the pets that all get lumped into the G2 category are still my faves, but I don't hate the other gens and find some of them to actually be rather pretty. It's fine to not like certain gens, but some people get really hostile about it, which I really don't like. I'm just glad that Hasbro didn't stop making LPS as a whole! Although, I will say that there is at least 1 ugly LPS in every generation, and that includes G2. Also, I actually loved the 2012 LPS show. It's been years since I last watched it, but it was one of my favorite shows as a kid. For me, it was up there with MLP, which was (and still is) one of my biggest special interests. its funny because I actually wasn't born when the g2 lps came out but i think i was given a big box from my cousin with them inside and i used to LOVE the lps tv show i watched it EVERY day!! but the funny thing is i actually don't remember that much of it other than the main character going down that box thingy to see the pets!
