- The fifth part of this history & travel documentary series chronicling my visit to the Waterloo battlefield. In this historical travel vlog I visit the farm which was the fortified stronghold on Wellington's right flank. Its defence became a battle within a battle. The Duke of Wellington said closing the gate at Hougoumont was the turning point of the battle. The Battle of Waterloo is one of the most decisive battles in history and so the battle ground is a top tourist destination in Belgium. Join me for a battlefield tour and lots of military history. @@DodgersTrips now did you know the the Black Bess flintlock used by the British army used flint from Brandon ( about 8 miles away from me ) . The flint was hard wearing and the French used their own flint which rapidly wore away . In the heat of the battle the English were able to keep their Brandon flint going around 3 times longer than the French and their inferior flint . That’s a lot of musket fire while the French were constantly changing worn out flints . A small advantage , but it proved decisive . 👍
I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing the info it's very interesting. Something I learnt on my trip was the British were able to reuse French musket balls but the French were unable use the British ones as they were larger. Again another small but significant advantage.

Now fully persuaded me to do a similar out of season trip to the Waterloo battlefield. Watch time I have visited it in the past has been part of an organised group, which was great but look forward to being able to walk round in my own time.
Nothing can beat having the freedom to wander at will, sit and ponder and have as much time as you need for the parts that interest you as an individual. You'll see in later videos how I had entire museums to myself. The weather was reasonably kind too so it turned out to be a good decision going in February. I hope you get to do a similar trip yourself. Thanks for watching the video.
When a Cannon ball was fired it was hoped it would Bounce along the ground to cause Maximum Damage, but the Soft ground that day at Waterloo made the Balls Stick in the Mud!! To the benefit of the British, Big difference if "Canister" was used Carnage!!!
Thanks Baz. By coincidence I was editing episode 8 a couple of days ago and I briefly mention this. I described them as shrapnel shells but I'm guessing Cannister is the correct term. Thanks for watching the videos it is really appreciated.
