  • ABRSM 2023 & 2024 - Grade 7 Piano exam - A:2 Allegretto ~ Bohuslav Martinu
The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu built his style out of a wide range of musical interests, including jazz, ragtime and the works of Stravinsky. As a result, his music often makes playful use of cross-rhythm and syncopation, as in this Allegretto from his collection Ctvrtky a osminky (Crotchets and Quavers).

    TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 84 dotted crotchet beats per minute.
Due to the frequent changing of time signatures and the frequency of cross-rhythms and syncopation, it could be wise to practise this piece using a metronome. There are many great metronome apps available these days for iPads / tablets and phones, etc, so if you haven’t used one yet it might be worth considering.
Obviously it is vital to practise at a slower tempo, so setting the metronome (if you use one) to quaver beats could be very helpful. For example, 84 dotted crotchet beats per minute is equivalent to 252 quaver beats per minute! This is far too fast a tempo to be able to practise at in the early stages of learning, so a good practise tempo for this piece might be something like 186 quaver beats per minute, equivalent to 62 dotted quaver beats per minute. Generally speaking this piece needs to be played quite metronomically, so again, use of a metronome will definitely help!
Aside from the challenges of cross-rhythms and time-signature changes the only other points to note are the importance of observing tenuto markings (the lines above or below the note-heads) such as in bars 3 & 4 etc … These notes must be held for their full value and not cut short. This is easily overlooked if you are busy playing lots of staccato in this piece.
Note the sim. (similar) direction for the left hand part at bar 3 - staccato is to be maintained throughout the left hand part apart from occasional paired slurs, such as in bars 17, 19, 21, and 23. At bar 53 we see the tenuto markings are back for a very legato left hand part for that section.
Dynamics are straightforward, but do try to get accents sounding a little louder than the other notes!

Thanks for the video! I have a question about A2? I looked at a few more videos of this song and in some of them, a2 was played at a very quick tempo. I was wondering if this is just another way to play it because the tempo set for the song matches yours…

I believe that the creator played it at the right tempo. I finished the piece and started at a tempo of 66 and increased to 84. I find it easier at the end since it’s a repeat and the speed is steady.
