      This is not true for all women, of course. But there was a pretty strong narrative of what a woman's role was back then. That is to say, to put her needs second to everyone else's and not be a buzzkill by asserting her own expectations.

      Yes, besides when this happened Paul was clearly still very young and immature. He still had a fair bit of growing up to do, and he probably didn't treat Linda like this, otherwise I don't think they would have been together for 3 decades.
      Between the different times and societal rules and Paul's immaturity at the time, while I don't defend the things he did, I'd say they are understandable but I hope he apologised to her at some point, maybe when they met again in the 70s.

    • @dabreu
      @dabreu Před 5 lety +9

      @@cammarc Indeed he changed. And I am not talking about his marriage with Linda at all. He started changing earlier because we can see in the lyrics of his songs that he cared. Listen to Lady Madonna, Another Day, Eleanor Rigby....The way he behaved was exactly the way most boys used to behave in the fifties and early sixties. He was under age when he started dating Dot. Not even 18. He felt he had to do those things because that was what everybody expected from boys. It was exactly like that here in Brazil. They wanted to control us in every single way. We could not have fun if they were not around. We had to dress just like they wanted too. My sister's boyfriend didn't want her the to wear dark glasses. We were objects they had to possess. Let's not forget some girls also wanted to possess the guys and behaved equally bad full of jealousy. Things started changing around 64. In my city most are still the same. I dated a guy in 1981 who decided to break up because of my clothes. They were not the way he approved. Now what amazes me is that The Beatles sort of started all the behaviour changes...Sure they had not idea it would happen, but it did happen. The simple fact they arrived wearing a kind of hair that was not allowed for boys made a revolution that went deeper and deeper. Then they refused to sing for seggregated audiences, they inovated in so many things. Even their movies were not like other movies for teens. Much better and...original. They had a gay manager...How great was that in a time it was considered a crime. Boys looked better after them and because of them so, we also had to change. For the first time girls could look like their idols...I had Beatles fringe. Wow! So Mary Quant gave us the mini skirts..That was perfect for Beatles female fans. Because suddenly we were as daring as they were. I noticed Paul saying about mini skirts...in the wrong date. His memory betrayed him because Dot could have not used somethng that didn't exist yet. It came only in 1964. Let's remember also the song Getting Better. In this song they addmited they were far from great guys in the past..." I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved. Man, I was mean, but I am changing my scene and I am doing the best that I can..." That's it. I am sure Paul not even dreams of controling Nancy. Something else: remember here we had only her version. His is missing. I do hope fans won't go now spreading what a jerk Paul is.

    It makes me pretty irritated that people constantly talks about how cruel John could be and his domestic abuse, but really, all of the Beatles were shitheads. I'm saying that as *the* obsessed fan! They were also lovely people, things just aren't that black and white. Anyway, thanks for the video on Dot, she deserves a little spotlight. Here's my own bonus fact: Paul also dated Iris Caldwell, sister of Rory Storm, and I can't remember where I read this, but it was a quote from her talking about how much her family loved Paul, but particularly her mother, who would comb out his sweaty leg hair after a show! What the absolute fuck, lmao! Iris also dated George, but when they were kids, so before Paul even knew George. Finally, happy John and Paul Day-- they met 62 years ago today. 💖💖💖

Me, I somehow doubt it. He was a musician in a band in the 60's so of course he acted shabbily, no surprises there. If the Beatles had never become famous we would never have heard a single word about this girl; yet she would have gone through just about exactly the same tribulations, and been just as deserving of having her story told. And some of it is just plain brainwashing. They don’t realize what is being done to them is wrong. They think that they’re hurt feelings are evidence of sensitivity, rather than abuse or mistreatment.

      I don't think that is the story. As I remember it, I think from the authorized biography, Paul lost his v at 14 to a girl who had a free house because she was baby sitting. He expressed regret in 1967/8 because he stitched the next day at school, by then he felt it as the wrong thing to have done. she was a few years older so if there was a bad party it was her but Paul describes it as totally on the level and consensual.

    Not giving excuses for Paul but obviously I have a bias for two reasons. One I love Paul. Secondly, my father died when I was 14 too, the age Paul lost his mother. I was very shitty to my boyfriend who I dated in my teens. around the same age as Paul dated this woman. Not excusing my actions but I was going through something tremendously horrible. People don’t understand that the loss of a parent impacts you psychologically and mentally. It’s so hard to loss a parent during those vulnerable years, so there is a tendency to take your frustration out on other people. Not excusing Paul’s actions, but I relate to them. I hope this video does not make people think he was a bad person. If you haven’t been through the death of a parent at a young age you don’t understand the trauma and how it impacts relationships. I thought my father’s death defined me as damaged but knowing that my idol went through something similar has assisted me mentally.
