Ugh. The things we do to keep a man or woman. When the dust settles and we look back it is always cringeworthy.
That’s why my plan is to cut and run next time things start going south. Probably won’t work out, but that’s my plan.
Agent J that could lead to a good decision, but last time it just kept me in a super toxic relationship long after it should have ended
That is the truth!
Not always. Sometimes you meet someone you'd happily act a fool for no matter when or however many years have passed. Or....maybe that's just the idealist in me that has never accepted death, or a life in the shadows of logic and practicality.
This is not true for all women, of course. But there was a pretty strong narrative of what a woman's role was back then. That is to say, to put her needs second to everyone else's and not be a buzzkill by asserting her own expectations.
She achieved more than closure! She became her own person!
That black and white photo makes her look like a teenage version of Judi Dench.
theylied1776 actually she looks a lot like Astrid who was Stuart Sutcliffs girlfriend . He was one of the Beatles before he died at a very early age. All of the Beatles loved her because she cared for them all by feeding them and cleaning their clothes.
@@Suzanne6336 I don't think she looks like "Astrid."
Paul and John had a lot more in common than I thought.
Not really Paul was young and looked up to John so maybe he just followed what John did with Cynthia
And that was common in those times . Women actually were in subjection to men as God says they should be. Paul is just a guy.@@Itz_Jade_
with a pretty face and a lot of musical talent John chose him. John was the leader @@Itz_Jade_
Everyone make mistakes when they were young. I'm glad Paul finally made things right in the end. classy as always
@Andrew Ongais Dont worry about Dot, she and Paul are happily married to this day, with 3 grown up kids.
Well McCartney No Matter What whether it's the old one the new one we're talking major dick head! Wow I can see why he was a major dick he was misogynistic and a total a******

I give him credit for growing out of it. I guess we all hate what we were like when we were young and stupid and yet thought we knew it all. They pick on girls for idolizing pop stars and stuff but I gotta say, the Brigitte Bardot crap was worse.
How many girls abuse their boyfriends emotionally and force them to dye their hair to look like Johnny Depp?

"John had the same rules for his girlfriend Cynthia" and Dot still thought John was more compassionate...
Human lives last almost a century.
Human society and culture changes almost yearly.
Every adult in the US has something in their past that is unacceptable by today's standards. The older you are, the more extreme those things will seem seen through the rose colored glasses of the present.
It really depends on each society, as the rate of change can fluctuate quite a bit. Here in Eastern Europe, almost nothing has changed in the past 30 years in terms of social norms or behaviors.
Well said!
Yes, besides when this happened Paul was clearly still very young and immature. He still had a fair bit of growing up to do, and he probably didn't treat Linda like this, otherwise I don't think they would have been together for 3 decades.
Between the different times and societal rules and Paul's immaturity at the time, while I don't defend the things he did, I'd say they are understandable but I hope he apologised to her at some point, maybe when they met again in the 70s.
@@cammarc Indeed he changed. And I am not talking about his marriage with Linda at all. He started changing earlier because we can see in the lyrics of his songs that he cared. Listen to Lady Madonna, Another Day, Eleanor Rigby....The way he behaved was exactly the way most boys used to behave in the fifties and early sixties. He was under age when he started dating Dot. Not even 18. He felt he had to do those things because that was what everybody expected from boys. It was exactly like that here in Brazil. They wanted to control us in every single way. We could not have fun if they were not around. We had to dress just like they wanted too. My sister's boyfriend didn't want her the to wear dark glasses. We were objects they had to possess. Let's not forget some girls also wanted to possess the guys and behaved equally bad full of jealousy. Things started changing around 64. In my city most are still the same. I dated a guy in 1981 who decided to break up because of my clothes. They were not the way he approved. Now what amazes me is that The Beatles sort of started all the behaviour changes...Sure they had not idea it would happen, but it did happen. The simple fact they arrived wearing a kind of hair that was not allowed for boys made a revolution that went deeper and deeper. Then they refused to sing for seggregated audiences, they inovated in so many things. Even their movies were not like other movies for teens. Much better and...original. They had a gay manager...How great was that in a time it was considered a crime. Boys looked better after them and because of them so, we also had to change. For the first time girls could look like their idols...I had Beatles fringe. Wow! So Mary Quant gave us the mini skirts..That was perfect for Beatles female fans. Because suddenly we were as daring as they were. I noticed Paul saying about mini skirts...in the wrong date. His memory betrayed him because Dot could have not used somethng that didn't exist yet. It came only in 1964. Let's remember also the song Getting Better. In this song they addmited they were far from great guys in the past..." I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved. Man, I was mean, but I am changing my scene and I am doing the best that I can..." That's it. I am sure Paul not even dreams of controling Nancy. Something else: remember here we had only her version. His is missing. I do hope fans won't go now spreading what a jerk Paul is.
Essero Eson by today’s standards, Abraham Lincoln would be considered a white supremacist
It makes me pretty irritated that people constantly talks about how cruel John could be and his domestic abuse, but really, all of the Beatles were shitheads. I'm saying that as *the* obsessed fan! They were also lovely people, things just aren't that black and white. Anyway, thanks for the video on Dot, she deserves a little spotlight. Here's my own bonus fact: Paul also dated Iris Caldwell, sister of Rory Storm, and I can't remember where I read this, but it was a quote from her talking about how much her family loved Paul, but particularly her mother, who would comb out his sweaty leg hair after a show! What the absolute fuck, lmao! Iris also dated George, but when they were kids, so before Paul even knew George. Finally, happy John and Paul Day-- they met 62 years ago today. 💖💖💖
Comb out sweaty leg hair...?? How hairy does one have to be for that?? Or maybe that wasn't the point....... 🙃🍆

All of the Beatles were kind of mean to their women, but John was the worst. I don't blame him for falling for Yoko, but the way he ended up things with Cyn after ten years of being together was just horrible. Paul was indeed nicer compared to him. The way he ended things with Dot was a lot better.
This made me a bit sad at first, because it's a terrible thing to do, but Paul wrapped things up nicely in the end. So he's still my favorite
Yeah if your gf or bf controls what you wear, break up immediately. Even if they’re buying the clothes, they should be ones you’ve picked out.
Paul's character must have did a total one-eighty over the years. Considering that he actually looked her up in Canada and tried to make amends.
Edit: I gave it some thought and I'm guessing that Paul was under Lennon's influence at the time on how he treated women. He was younger and looked up to John and probably just followed his example.
Joe Simon very true
I won't blame Paul because I did the same I don't hang out with girls.. Only boys and I used to do bad stuff.. Just like John did and now since I'm going to high school there is a chance that I'm going to do the things that John did or what I did back then... Because my family don't care what I do and I don't know why because still I won't blame Paul at all

"I used to be angry young man. Me hiding my head in the sand. You gave me the word, I finally heard. I'm doing the best that I can." Paul on his younger self. So he had already admitted to being a young callow jerk long before the limo thing.
callow? You don't really know what callow means do you? lol
So Paul was an abusive boyfriend. Telling her how to dress, how to look, what to say, how to think and having rules. I guess this was just the 1960s but is still is gross. But at least he apologized, most men wouldn't do that, his wit grew with age.
@@mariaelisamalpartida3051 ummm are you telling me it’s the victims fault they got abused because they were not strong enough? Not everyone is strong though... is it okay to abuse them? Shall I kill kittens because they're not strong enough to stand up to me? Not everyone is raised with a solid sense of self. Not everyone is beautiful. Not everyone is intelligent. This is not a justification to treat anyone poorly, control them, or abuse them because they cannot stop you. I'm so glad she found love again and got closure with Paul
I’d be happy with you doing a many episode Beatles history. Making so real and human. Thank you. This was wonderful.
Excellent encapsulation! Great script, images, rhythm. Wonderful job all around.
Eddie Deezen - the foremost authority on the Beatles - wrote this. His "Beatle Quizzes" were so hard, I could never pass any of them. And I considered myself an "authority" on the Beatles too. PS- See Eddie as Richard "Ringo" Klaus in the movie "I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978). It's a great movie and captures how it really was during Beatlemania in 1964.
Well at least I'm glad she got her closure
What if you're put in prison for a crime. But while you're serving your sentence the thing you're put in prison for isn't a crime anymore? For instance, if you drank/produced alcohol during prohibition and put in prison. Only for prohibition to be lifted while you're serving your sentence?
Depends how law’s written. For prohibition repeal, crimes were not expunged. But some state’s marijuana laws allow the examination of old sentences covered by new laws.
At least Dot had moments to be with the man she thought who could love her as she is rather than not been able to experienced it.
“If youre gonna fool around only fool around with me”
So Paul was also a very jealous guy......

Me 2 :)
As Lt. Traxler said in 'The Terminator' - "I'm sure there's a point to all this." But I don't see it. Did anyone actually write in and ask "How did Paul McCartney treat his 'first' girl-friend?" Me, I somehow doubt it. He was a musician in a band in the 60's so of course he acted shabbily, no surprises there. If the Beatles had never become famous we would never have heard a single word about this girl; yet she would have gone through just about exactly the same tribulations, and been just as deserving of having her story told. This is 'Mommy Dearest' journalism at it's worst. The Today I Found Out crew - they are scrambling to find relevant material ... and failing badly.
Something I didn't know about the Beatles. I'm so surprised. It was very interesting to learn this information.
Paul and Dot are still happily married to this day, 2 sons and a daughter.
So Paul was always a control freak
I do believe he was a tad controlling with Linda, the love of his life. But his current wife seems like she would not tolerate that BS, Ah, they're both older and wiser. But then again, what do I know? I know none of these people personally.
That's some serious red flags there, Paul. Sounds like he hit almost every point under the definition of emotional abuse. :/
Paul was a working-class Liverpool lad, born in 1942, and he had recently lost his mother to cancer. If his dealings with his first serious girlfriend do not live up to 2019 standards, that's too bad for 2019 standards, and not a huge smear on Paul.
Chris Maxfield Seriously?
Chris Maxfield being a total dick is really never in style, in any year or decade. You can dig somebody’s music, and still, they can have been a total dick. Both can be true. At the same time, even. Doesn’t mean you’d necessarily want the guy dating your sister; just means you admire his technical talent/creativity/whatever, as relates to music. Plenty of people are brilliant in one field, and awful in other areas of life.
Chris Maxfield dude even in the 1930’s this is emotional abuse. Get out of here with that abuse sympathy. That’s gross.

Great video!!!!!!!!
Thanks for it. Interesting information. Don’t think I’ve seen a photo’ of Cynthia with a different colour of hair than blonde. Glad Dot and Paul laid the ghost to rest. Paul’s carefully avoided saying too much about Jane Asher. John and Paul mirrored one another in so many ways, even with Jane and Cynthia, I’ve just realised.
Some people dont get that this is the way that things were back then. Yes, its bad but its just thats what it was. Paul admitted that he was wrong and thats the good thing. He is so kind and a much better perosn. no hate, just wanted to clear that.
Few adolescents' lives are different; what this obscure relationship and modern common lives have in common is the level of scrutiny. Thankfully my adolescence remains unknown to all but myself and a few young girls who would most likely prefer I remained silent, as I prefer to do.
Interesting take. 😒
Great video. I wish you had addressed the lyrics in "Getting Better" off of Sgt Pepper. I wonder if they were about this girlfriend?
"I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene
And I'm doing the best that I can (Ooh)"
It was John who sang that lyric
i like the way you narrated that. :-)
She learned the hard way about Paul's possessiveness and his need to control everything & everyone around him.
Interesting, but not pleasant.
Dot did herself a great disfavour by going along with Paul's demands.
In today's world, she might have (I hope) stood up for herself
and told him to go pound sand if he couldn't accept her as she was.
A lot of the time it’s simply impossible. And especially back then, since they would be social pressure on the women to not stand up to men, and to stay with them…
And some of it is just plain brainwashing. They don’t realize what is being done to them is wrong. They think that they’re hurt feelings are evidence of sensitivity, rather than abuse or mistreatment.
"The ghost was laid"? Sounds wild.
Honestly Cynthia would have became the same if she never got pregnant

How about Paul losing his V card while baby sitting?
?????
I don't think that is the story. As I remember it, I think from the authorized biography, Paul lost his v at 14 to a girl who had a free house because she was baby sitting. He expressed regret in 1967/8 because he stitched the next day at school, by then he felt it as the wrong thing to have done. she was a few years older so if there was a bad party it was her but Paul describes it as totally on the level and consensual.
Learning this about Paul makes me feel a little better about Heather Mills. And John treated his son Julian like dirt.

I liked what Dot had to say about Paul's dad and his aunties. Paul came from a very tight-knit loving family.
Not giving excuses for Paul but obviously I have a bias for two reasons. One I love Paul. Secondly, my father died when I was 14 too, the age Paul lost his mother. I was very shitty to my boyfriend who I dated in my teens. around the same age as Paul dated this woman. Not excusing my actions but I was going through something tremendously horrible. People don’t understand that the loss of a parent impacts you psychologically and mentally. It’s so hard to loss a parent during those vulnerable years, so there is a tendency to take your frustration out on other people. Not excusing Paul’s actions, but I relate to them. I hope this video does not make people think he was a bad person. If you haven’t been through the death of a parent at a young age you don’t understand the trauma and how it impacts relationships. I thought my father’s death defined me as damaged but knowing that my idol went through something similar has assisted me mentally.
Paul McCartney, as amazing as his career has been, is not a man without flaws. Read about the Beatles and you see a control freak here. This is quite evident in the way he treated Dot. He is also notoriously tight-fisted. On the other hand, my Father met and chatted with Paul at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto the night Paul went off to meet Dot. He was really taken in with how charming Paul McCartney was. He is very keen to protect his image.
