In the days of break bulk cargo the Brooklyn waterfront was busy but could not support the high volume and fast turnaround of todays container ships, just imagine adding ten thousand trucks to the already overcrowded highway system there. As a youngster I remember seeing the many car floats that each of the RRs serving the area operated and the little RR steam tugs. The companies in the Terminal buildings made everything from military and industrial electronics to wine and olive packing.
