The fact that almost every specific manga has it's own unique art style makes the whole manga world all the more exciting and really interesting to read..
Makoto Yukimira (Vinland Saga) and Araki deserved to be here
He mentioned that Fist of the North Star was an inspiration for Jojo's so he indirectly mentioned or included Araki as well.
Manga proves that colored art is NOT objectively better than black-and-white. Both visual styles possess their own unique strengths that allow them to better communicate their respective stories and aesthetic flair.
@@amartinez97 And there's nothing wrong with that. It's just important to keep in mind that some stories infact benefit from a lack of color and vice versa.
I can only read jojo in colored, if I read it in black and white I have 0 idea wtf is going on
It's harder to create focus in color. In black and white, everything works in service of the composition. But it color, your eye can be drawn to some background rando's pants because they are red rather than focusing on where the composition of the panel wants you to look at. Not to mention in America comics, the colors often obfuscate the great line work underneath and undermine their effectiveness. Bottom line, if you are drawing with black lines, the comic works better in B&W.
I know JOJO was mentioned but I think Araki's artistic evolution over the course of JOJO's should be delved into further. Steel ball run and Jojolion feature some of the most unique and powerful art in the medium.
@@SuzukiT You are a potato head. I'm not even going to argue with you
@@SuzukiT last time i check his later artstyle get into museum and Olympic
since they didn’t get mentioned i thought i’d bring them up myself, Katsuhiro Otomo (creator of Akira) and Mori Kaoru (creator of A Bride’s Story) deserve to be credited for having some absolutely beautifully illustrated manga
A bride’s story genuinely made me very interesting in central Asian culture. Her ability to understand the intricacies of central Asian fabric patterns and incorporating it in an interesting way is amazing. She is amazing.
I'm glad he hearted this comment, Kaoru Mori is one of my favs, he shouldn't have left her out. Then again, he already mentions that manga has so many amazing artists it would go on for 5+ hours if he added everyone. He just added the most popular stuff. I think he should've added some less popular amazing artists in here.
Spoiler warning if u didnt the Akirs manga
Yo omg in the end of the akira manga where Tetuso and Akira's big bang like explosion combined the art was fucking amazing. I really adore Akira. Its such a masterpiece
Hell yeah, a bride’s story. I remember taking a chance on that and being blown away. I found it right around the time I started listening to Tengir-Too. Listening to their song Erke Kyz and other really brought me into each chapter, fun times.
Akira as a manga really deserves more credit, especially in matters of artwork. I think I never saw in my life any prettier and classier backgrounds than the whole Akira's cyberpunk & post-apo urban scenery.
The art of Berserk and Vagabond can never be replicated in an anime. The art of the anime will always be a downgrade from the manga of those 2.
And it’s normal. How are they supposed to draw as well as genius how can spend 1 week just to draw one panel ?
It should be obvious that it’s impossible and people that ask them to draw as well are dumb.
I mean.....everything's impossible until it's done. But yeah, they're never gonna create an anime that'll match Berserk. For that, we'd need a team of Miura's, and a really, REALLY big budget (which they won't do because they know it'll make money without a sizable budget).
personally i wouldn't mind a berserk anime with very simplified designs but absolutely gorgeous animation. They just have to work with the strengths of the medium and it'll still be a good adaptation
Murata is a fucking beast man….he’s up there with one of my favorite artist, I still get goosebumps on some of the panels he draws, some stuff deserves to be in a museum
What makes him amazing is that his art is consistently at a high level.
Plenty of artists have super detailed panels, but Murata does it on a regular basis.
Miura's greatest hidden strength is backgrounds, even the most mangas with the most detailed characters leave a blank background, an empty void. Only Miura really bothers to fill that void in a way that makes sense, making the action really grounded.
@@lil7725 The only arc with consistently amazing art is the monster association ark. Before that arc,the gag aspect of the manga brought the art and the sense of suspense that comes with it down
Araki's work on STEEL BALL RUN is godly
I dont know why but blending some sports in a shounen/seinen with amazing horse arts was super
I think the reason why Araki's artwork became so godly in SBR is because in 2005, the JoJo series was transferred to the monthly seinen manga magazine Ultra Jump. With a monthly serialization he had time in evolving his artwork as well as able to portray things in which he wasn't able to portray back when JoJo was in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Imagine if SBR and JoJolion was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, man he would not have evolve his art that much as he is right now.
He is Underrated ..I just Finished whole JoJo Anime ..And Went To See Manga damn it's Godly 🔥. Especially Black And White ..I don't like Coloured manga they ruin experience
Also Araki has an ability to depict surrealist body horror like no other. The way it peels back reality but never resorts to just gore for the shock is amazing.
OPM art is just insane. It makes me feel how it was for early berserk fans, to read a new chapter and find a masterfully drawn panel
Tetsuo Hara's best art work actually isn't in Fist of the North Star, but the prequal that would release over a decade later, in Souten No Ken or Fist of the Blue Sky. The art is sooo good, I think it makes it the 2nd greatest Manga art of all time. But yes, Fist of the North Star is definitely more iconic with it's art.
Sad Junji Ito artwork not mention because the art style for horror manga is amazing
Edti: Junji Ito also inspire Gege Akutami in Jujutsu Kaisen
I'm surprised you didn't mention Hiroya Oka of GANTZ and Inuyashiki fame, his digital artwork is honestly breathtaking sometimes, and the facial expressions are among the best i've ever seen. Very happy to see Hayashida mentioned though, she is amazing and Dorohedoro is one of the best series I've ever read!
i also missed Hiroya Oka and the incredible alien designs that he created
I know all the characters were so detailed and creatures design were stuff of nightmares👹👹
Boichi's art in Dr. Stone has been amazing, especially for a weekly manga.
boichi's art is always good, sun ken rock and origin, both has really good art
i personally love senku's design, and how it just reflects his character in a way i cant even describe
theres just so many scenes and panels beautifully drawn by the guy, i have to say
Just finished reading berserk, i have no words the only thing that comes to mind is Genius🙏
I finished reading 3 months ago, yet it still feels fresh off my mind. God I love Berserk
I love Tite Kubo's art. It look so appealing to watch. He's so good at conveying human emotions by showing facial expressions.
His characters and the micro stylization of their features are so attractive, in terms of bringing out attractive features on characters hes one of the best
Yusuke Murata is the only guy who manages to make me pause in the middle of reading and just stare at the page in awe for 5 minutes strait
the evil ocean panel did that for me, as well as most of the garou vs Saitama fight
The editing in the vids is super under appreciated, especially at the beginning where you had the manga panels moving. I know how long and how much effort that takes and it doesn’t go unnoticed.
I'm liking these documentary type videos, hope to see more
Sui Ishida has probably the best art I've seen in all of manga
His style just has so much CHARACTER. I can't explain it but it feels alive. His shading and "sketchiness" adds to the feel and his evolution over the series is fantastic. I don't know much about art so I can't articulate (haha pun) it well but it's so RAW
Jojo's bizarre adventure, Berserk, Dragon ball and such has such a good art style And Details in itself That it is too good to digest. They all evolved To greater heights, making them fresh as the first chapter and better than all. Incredible experiences.
Probably biased but i think that Dragon Ball is the best at describing emotion in his art when there's a fight. But again probably biased 'cause im a big DB fan.
@@broken75.20 it's ok. You're actually true. Db is the one that Made Such fluid and understandable movements in fight scenes in Manga. and leading other titles to Inherit the style
Besides kubo I freaking love kazuki takahashi's art style so much it's really something else in my opinion tho XD
I think Murata doesnot get praised enough , one of the greatest mangaka of present days
5:18 Witch Hat Atelier has THE best paneling I’ve ever seen in manga, so distinctive
+1 and more people need to hop onto it. People, please branch out from only reading action focused series. This is easily one of the best currently running series.
Tongari Boushi no Atelier is a MARVEL and its art is fucking GORGEOUS💯🙌🏽♥️
The fact that people are commenting and recommending so many more manga artists just goes to show that you could make an hour long video and it would still feel like it's not enough. Manga is absolutely amazing
This was a very nice look at many influential manga artists in the field. They’ve truly made permanent marks on the industry and changed the game. As an artist I really loved everything you went over in this video!
I'm a big fan of documentary style videos like this. Keep up the good work! The only thing is that there always seems to be the lack of shoujo and josei manga in most manga videos in CZcams which is bit disappointing since shoujo and josei manga has influenced many manga/anime series including shounen and seinen series. Unfortunately, not many people read shoujo because they generalize it as girly, cliched, or having similar manga art when that's not always the case. A popular example, is Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda influencing Berserk since Kentaro Muira often considered Berserk to be like shoujo in some aspects. Leiji Matsumoto is another artist who was influenced by shoujo as well.
I think Naoki Urasawa is probably still the best when it's about facial expressions. The amount of expressions this man can draw which can actually be recognized immediately is insane.
Damn, I didn´t knew I needed this. Really liked how you analized the art not only aesthetically but what it represents and the message it conveys. I would watch a full length video on every mangaka´s art. Maybe make it a new series?
The greatest part to me about manga is the uniqueness in the art
I like how makoto yukimura (vinland) makes the manga so detailed and expressive too, like a story is tactile, love how bersek vinland etc makes that feeling feel
Great video as usual! I like how you had some of the most awesome music from Bloodborne in the background to match the awesomeness of the drawings.
This is one of the best videos on manga i've ever seen. It's simply so pleasing to watch and so inspiring.
Great job dude!
Gonna recommend Masked Man a very interesting manga: Girl's Last Tour. He would find this interesting
@@mightychris4800 Basically, to sum it up real quick:
Take a slice of life anime, but set it in a post-apocalyptic war-torn abandoned world. The main characters are two girls who are best friends, and it’s basically just them keeping one another’s company and exploring the wastelands, scavenging old military sites, and hoping that they may find another person besides just the two of them.
This show and/or manga was so simultaneously lonely at the same time comforting, and the main characters are so fun and adorable to watch. The way it so subtly showed you this broken world with insane architecture was really beautiful.
EDIT: The manga has a different (and better) ending than the show. If the show had like 1 more episode it would have captured the full story. But either way you experience it it’s just wonderful.
I'm glad i read your comment. Currently at chapter 2 and i'm already loving the story and art, dunno why it's giving me Berserk vibes.
May Mr. Kentaro Miura's soul rest in peace

@@sedbaka I sense some really ```good vibrations``` coming from you, my friend.
I’m half way through Berserk and I’m mentally scarred but I allso can’t stop reading, it’s amazing
INCREDIBLE VIDEO MAN! I absolutely LOVE Sakamoto Shinichi's work and Innocent is an absolute masterpiece! I hope one day it can get an anime adaptation and they do it justice. I also love Toriyama's style cause it's so iconic and impactful. Miura is another one of my favorite mangaka, Murata, Kubo, and Hayashida are awesome as well. BOICHI is another god of ART and I just can't get enough of it. Dr. Stone is also my #1 top favorite new gen Shounen and I can't wait for season 3!
Vagabond's art man, what a masterpiece.
I think the author of Zetman should definitely be in the conversation for some of the best artwork in manga. His scenery and way of conveying emotions is top tier
Kubo b&w art for me is the best his shading is just insane
Hey bro this is such a well made video. The music behind the video just makes it that much better imo.
Don't think I didn't notice that. Masked Man really self-inserting him into Chainsaw Man, huh?
sick editing the video was well made and coherent throughout
I finished Climber recently, the art work is simply breath taking, its so surreal and beautiful
I love this videos man, they are so relaxing
great editing. it looked really nice at the timeline thing.
I'd say one of the best artist I've ever seen is kazue kato her style is a blend of cartoony for characters and realism for the backgrounds, she's able to convey the conceptual nature of the yokai/buddahs very beautifully as well as draw a stellar background that looks like a photo. In one of her older works she was drawing the ocean, I thought it was a picture till I saw the hatching. She is also a master of color and greyscale.
I appreciate these videos heavy when coming back to work keep up the great content man
yo masked this video was actually amazing def one of my fav videos from ur channel keep it up :D
I think The Fable deserves more mentions when talking about the greatest artwork in manga, the realism clashing with the sometimes absurd facial expressions works so well, its probably the most realistic manga of all time, every body looks natural.
So glad you touched on Nihei's art. I have been absolutely enchanted by his style, and went from having never heard of him to eagerly devouring every single morsel I can find of his. As you say, his manga is definitely about telling a story without many words, and his vistas are just outstanding, but with the clean lines and perspective you'd expect from someone who had been in construction and studied Design at Parsons, NY previous to being a mangaka. He is hands down my favourite mangaka
I've been so hungry for the _experimental and lonely_ vibes of Nihei's work, especially when so many people influenced by him have missed that undercurrent, and apply _maximum exposition and scale_ instead. Warframe comes to mind. The humanoid cosmic horror designs are lovely, but the story's so _loud._
@@Densoro if you find similar, let me know, as the search is long and fruitless sadly
Wonderful video featuring the artists of the medium.
Bravo thank you for giving artists the spotlight and having great taste.
I love these analytical type videos, I tried watching the protagonist one I. The background but put it on watch later because it needed my full attention.
Keep up the good work Masked
I like that you use Ludwig’s theme every chance that you get.
That vagabond panel you showed from the farmng arc is actually amazing. It really looks like it could just be a picture.
I think the thing I love most about manga is that we can have artwork like this that just leaves your jaw on the floor and more simple art like dowman seiman's work and it still serve the same purpose. And I love them both, the stellar lifelike art is a testament to the dedication and passion, whilst the more abstract and cartoonish art is its own skill of conveying things in a stylized manner.
yeah!! great video bro. thanks for taking the time and do this, the craft is awesome! so awesome to know you like Nihei and Q-hayashida too! haha. cheers!!!
Murata the One Punch Man manga is a league of its own.
they're all masters, berserk art style is just mindblowing IMO. like holy moly it's so clean and so detailed every panel is just worth staring for hours
This is def one of the best channels related to manga
Great video! I really like that you brought up Masasumi Kakizaki. If you ever do a part two or add-on to this video you should definitely bring up Hiroya Oku, he was a pioneer of the digital processing for backgrounds and if I remember correctly, created one of those visual techniques used very often in Ecchi and H manga. He mentions it in the authors notes of one of the volumes of Gantz
Mangaka are amazing! Authors like Toriyama, Miura, Oda and Tezuka are genius artists
GIVE KUBO HIS RESPECT!
Great video man, super well done. Just my two cents but a few artists I feel really deserved some shine in this video are Ito Junji, Fujimoto Tatsuki, and Urasawa Naoki. Definitely think there’s enough amazing artists in manga out there to warrant a part 2 of this though, hope to see that someday
You could honestly make a whole series about manga artists. You definitely touched on some of the greats but it’s crazy to think that you are scratching the surface of the insane amount of talent in manga history. Great video. It would be cool to see you do a video about art alongside another artist.
In my opinion vagabond and bouchi, climber easily have the best art for me

Bro the way you edit and tell stories is top tier. It’s like you’re using genjutsu. Keep up the quality content g 🔥
Damn the quality of your videos just keeps going up dude
There is a manga about being an artist called Blue Period and it’s getting an anime soon
Was really hoping Takeshi Obata would make it on this list. He's had a pretty rough time lately but we can't forget how masterful his art was in Death Note and Platinum End
Love your videos and how you make them so consistently please keep it up man.
love your videos bro! keep it up
I dont know if anybody mentiont it but Ajin demi human has also one of the best art that I have ever seen.
We appreciate you Masked Man. This video screams hard work. Amazing video!
I find this video very special to me. as an aspiring manga / comic illustrator who is working on their own comic or manga (whatever you may consider it) i also find it helpful. My art style consists heavily on cartoony style but realism is in there (or at least i try to despite me still practicing anatomy and such). So seeing how you broke down the art helped me take a step back and try to take it easy and think how i want my comic to look without stressing too much. (Im working on the pages to my first comic that im hoping to make it into a career and im STRESSED. To the point ive been hesitant to work on it cuase i dont want to ruin the art). It may seem strange that this helped me ease my stress but its a very good video altogether. It has my appreciation :)👌
I recommend checking out Glass Mask, if you're interested, as it takes inspiration from Osamu Tezuka's cartoony look, with added layers of sparkles and beautiful illustrations.
What a magnificent trip down memory lane celebrating this insane and wonderful world that is manga
I am actually looking forward to new manga authors with how they proceed with their styles in art
Amazing video!!! Keep up the good work !!
Oh was waiting for this, nice work dude.
Its not mentioned here but the way junji ito builds suspense through his panels is just incredible. And then when you finally get to those big shocking moments, it is genuinely some of the most detailed lovecraftian type art ive ever seen.
Air Gear’s Oh!Great’s art deserves much more appreciation, not that you needed to mention him of course, I just want to use this opportunity to direct people towards his art. Definitely fell under the radar over the years compared to his pears, but nonetheless one of the great draftsmen of modern manga, imo.
I only have the first 2 omnibus volumes of air gear as it's out of print but it is truly a gorgeous series. It's so easy to follow characters movement with his art too.
I’ve been loving masked man’s video essay type videos lately.
Im glad I sub this channel. You help me a lot in finding some good mangas as well as sharing us your opinions and some facts. As always Thanks dude
Hello, I know you mostly focus on manga, but I would like to recommend steins gate through the anime. You may find it a bit slow in the beginning but the payoff in my opinion is worth it. It has loveable characters and has a great concept that I won't discuss here cause I believe the less you know about the series the better your experience will be through the anime. Lastly, great job on your video. Loved seeing the history of different artist and how the medium evolved. With that said, have a great day.
Rad artstyle is sweet and all But i truly adore obscure scenes and drawings, like the darkness demon in csm or the Later parts of aot with some of its Titans for example. Thats what sticks in my mind
It’s pretty cool when you look at an authors artwork at the start of a series and then look at the end to see how their style changed and evolved and improved
man with every video you post i only love you more and more
The art of Manga is truly something out of this world. Every panel can be a beautiful Wallpaper.
If you take a look at other works of Inio Asano, you can see that his art style is evolving. Just check the art of Solanin, Goodnight Punpun, Girl on the Shore, Downfall, and Dead Dead demon`s dededede Destruction or Yuusha-Tachi and you can see different art styles in them.
man... I just can't stop watching your videos, love your content
Kokou No Hito/The Climber has some incredible art also. Throughout the story the art is relatively basic but whenever mountains are involved the quality jumps up by an insane amount. You can definietly tell where the artists passion lies
I also think eichiro oda deserves recognition because his character designs and attention to details of things mention years ago coming to fruition, also how he keeps designing new characters and new places to each island we go to in one piece. I would also like to say junji ito art is both horrifying and beautiful
If u look at Oda’s not one piece art he has the same level of drawing as inoue
Murata's work on Eyeshield 21 is the reason why I started reading manga almost a decade ago. His work on OPM is just *chef's kiss*
i liked watching the video while revisiting moments from manga pages that pop up in the background
Yea I know traditional isnt cheaper. My mistake, hope yall enjoyed regardless
Dr stone has outsanding details on the art despite airing weekly
Great video, keep up the good work!
Digital is also still hand drawn
What about Baki's artwork.
What about art of Kingdom ?
