Unsure if you play videogames, but if you do, have you played MOTHER 3? There are queer coded characters called magypsies, and they assist the MC in their own way, they're viewed as non-binary but are very unique in how they present themselves. I personally think they're sweethearts.
I am gay. I have post traumatic stress disorder surrounding homophobia from coming out when I was young - about 40 years ago - and fighting for gay rights. I am clinically triggered by the public use of the Q-word to identify the LGBT+ community. When LGBT+ creators use that slur, it makes their product inaccessible to people disabled in the way that I am. This isn't at all uncommon among older members of the gay community. It essentially excludes us from partaking in your media and as members of the community. I understand the idea of 'taking back the language' but in order to do so, you have to deny the use of the slur to the group that ordinarily uses it as a slur; by inviting straight people to use the slur, you are actually normalizing it, not reclaiming it. By using it in your titles, you don't hurt any homophobic people, who don't care... but you do hurt other members of the LGBT+ community who don't consent to us being identified that way. I really wish that members of the community who wish to express themselves this way would consider the impact they have on other members - particularly older members who may as a result become shut out of the community. Please stop doing this.
I think the confidence is a big part of it. They know they're going against what everyone around them stands for, but they don't care. They're completely shameless and I love that.

As a baby gay, I often rooted for the villains because I felt many of them were misunderstood and wouldn't be acting that way if they were accepted for who they were. However, I don't enjoy how they're now making them antiheroes rather than villains. I liked their villainy, it was cathartic and fascinating.
@@DanielVCOliveira No, that's a good question. What I had are called 'invisible disabilities', which means that they weren't obviously apparent. Especially when I was young enough that it could have been a quirk I was going to grow out of. In hindsight, seen through the years, the diagnoses make sense. But at the time, I didn't have the words to ask for help, or even explain to myself what was happening. I just thought I was lazy, or silly, or weak, or naughty, or weird, or attention seeking. And the other students and teachers acted like I was those things, too. Lots of bullying. I'd try so hard to hide what was going on with me. I tried so hard to be normal. I was never a massive Disney person, but I did always like how many of the villains were out and proud about their body's quirks.

related to that expresiveness that joe mentioned, i think one of the reasons its such a pity that modern disney movies forego a villain or have a "twist villain" is that they still stick (with a few exceptions) to the same standards of beauty in character design since the 1980s -it cannot be understated how ariels design basically was the basis for every disney princess set after her. disney villains historically are designed with more exaggerated features, more expressive, more dramatical, which makes for greatly entertaining animation and of course musical numbers. a few disney movies take a page out of dreamworks and make characters that are "outsiders" to mainstream society (the biggest one that comes to mind is wreck it ralph) but even then the character design of the "villain" is softened and made to fit the rest of the universe of the movie: in a way, as disney has tried to make their heroes more like outcasts trying to find themselves or their place in the world, the more they have assimilated the villains to look as... well, part of that world. i do think this is also part of the reason they are making remakes focused on villains: with a new movie focusing on them theres new merchandise to be made and sold, except this time it has a bankable pretty face like that of Angelina Jolie or Emma Stone. and, just as these live action movies tend to have a darker, more self serious tone, the camp, the performance of evil and the fun in the excess is erased in favor of fashionable anti-hero characterization. i think thats why your conclusion on assimilation is so well done and needed. not much has changed in the world of disney, to be perfectly honest: there is always a system that works, a villain that threatens it, and heroes that must reestablish the previous order. more recent movies like Frozen 2 dip their toes in ideas of reclaimed land, imperialism and reparations, but they never truly change the overall system. villains, as maligned as they were, presented a sort of person, a sort of existence that was exciting and new and revolutionary: theres nothing of that in modern disney movies, which makes for pretty good but unmemorable fare.
For me what appeals to villainy is the power. You can't take away rights and healthcare from a villain, they're too powerful. Even in a world that hates them, they find a way to survive. And when villains do eventually fall to the hero, they always go out with a bang.
There's no doubt Disney villains are great great characters with great personalities, they're cool and fascinating! So I don't like to see them becoming anti-heroes as well.. their back story could explain why they are evil in the first place, but it wouldn't change the fact they are evil. In my opinion an evil character appeals to the public only if they're a well written character, and I greatly appreciate "giving up" and being fascinated by them for that brief moment on the screen.
That point about villains often getting one song to showcase their whole self made me think of Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island - "Upstage, lads! This is my ONLY number!"
The other thing about Descendants is that not only does it have those songs in it, but all three movies are fundamentally about the VKs, especially Mal, trying to reconcile who they are and where they came from with the society they've since joined, which just reinforces all of that coding imo.
I have an entirely different relationship with Mother Knows Best. I knew from the get-go how insincere the song actually was because EVERYTHING Mother Gothel says to Rapunzel is almost word for word what my mum has said to me. Her "I'm just saying cause I wuv you" line cut like a knife because of how real it was. I have a lot of complicated feelings about Tangled.....and now Encanto.
Nya, after watching this video I think I understand a little better the self-conscious dynamics of my stories, why many of the villains that I create for them are good friends of my main characters, the "heroes" don't care that they are villains and in fact, (while still being "good" them and "evil" the villains), they have an attitude of "Has your apocalyptic weapon broken? Leave it to me, maybe I can fix it."

I love villains, I’m queer, mentally ill, and autistic and I see myself in the campy queer-coded villain. I started out loving Disney villains more than the heroes as a kid, and now I adore Batman villains. Characters like Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow, and Two-Face aren’t explicitly stated as queer, but fans like me still see themselves in these characters and can see queerness in the characters.
I feel like Ursula is Ariel in 10 years, if we’re talking about a queer view of the story. Ariel represents a young queer individual, someone who is still exploring their identity, but only in a way that would be accepted by mainstream society. Ursula is someone who is already secure in their queer identity, and no longer wants to conform to societal norms, but embrace every nuance of their queerness in the most eccentric way. I love it
I think it also has do do with the confidence of the villains in these songs. They know who they are and refuse to compromise that, which is something most young queer people have yet to experience. So, this speaks to their desire to have that experience in this big and imperfect way. I think that this desire of Disney's to give them a reason, undercuts that unapologetic aspect of their character. Which is why many people who love them are so adversed to these reimaginings.

See I’m never sure how I feel about the recent trend to rebrand Disney villains as anti heroes in remakes like Maleficent and Cruella. On the one hand, I feel like it adds to the characters’ development and I’ve always loved 3 dimensional villains more than two dimensional ones. On the other hand, I think they were fine and totally fun on their own without the rebranding. Granted, no remake will truly erase the originals imo, but still. I mean, I could even wax on about how much I’d love a Sephiroth redemption in FFVIIR, but I don’t like, expect it bc of Seph’s infamy as a villain in video games. That gets like, an essay unto itself however ahah. But yeah, I love both complex and simple villains so my feelings toward turning villains into anti heroes is so mixed, I don’t know how I feel about them.
I think that possible answer to add one is one that is much more simple. It’s even written in the title! It’s good to be bad. Bad, signifying homosexuality, as it’s been viewed as a negative thing throughout history. And a villains entire mantra is that it’s actually *good* to be like that. Therefore, it’s good to be gay. The villain clearly outwardly celebrates it. Although expressing this differently, it’s still a celebration of themselves. Be it how evil they are or how powerful, they clearly love themselves for it. Even if shunned by society, they keep loving and celebrating! And that’s meaningful! It’s like pride!! A celebration (however that celebration is expressed) of difference and “inherent bad-ness” but in a person! A villain offers us a space that for once, explores being “bad” as good. It’s good to be bad.
haven't watched this video yet but as a gay™ i weirdly REALLY miss the days of true disney queercoded villains, not antiheroes but just straight up villains. their shamelessness and confidence was so fun and let's be real, villains are always more fun to admire than heroes. there's a reason why most disney merch is of their old villains and not the good guys or new antiheroes. i really miss that, even if it wasn't great representation, because it felt like shameless queerness and atypicality rather than this new age hush hush lack of that.
Oh God I hope Disney doesn't ruin this Cruella! I think Emma Stone is a great actor and I know it's produced by Glenn Close, but they've done so much damage to their villains lately that I'm not sure what to believe.

Out of all the Disney Villains cliches, (watch the Ms.Mojo video about that) the only cliche I don't like is the "Acting Effeminate" one. I understand it makes the villain seem more over the top. But if we're going to have more positive LGBTQ+ representation in the future, the "acting effeminate" trope need to stop.

I think my take away from your show today is that the LGBTQ family likes being seen as being a villain we enjoy it it is unique really was Curella DiVall a lesbian or a drag queen is she a real female Ursula from the Little mermaid I question why is she a bad female or a good drag queen giving people what they’ve asked for and then letting them experience the good and bad at LGBTQ people really evil or have we been treated is evil are we presented as being evil and therefore we own it as members of the family we own that so it cannot hurt us being called queer was an insult it’s not now we change that.

Being a (looking back) disabled kid, I always liked how their bodies were different from the heroes'... and how they weren't ashamed of that.

I think my take away from your show today is that the LGBTQ family likes being seen as being a villain we enjoy it it is unique really was Curella DiVall a lesbian or a drag queen is she a real female Ursula from the Little mermaid I question why is she a bad female or a good drag queen giving people what they’ve asked for and then letting them experience the good and bad at LGBTQ people really evil or have we been treated is evil are we presented as being evil and therefore we own it as members of the family we own that so it cannot hurt us being called queer was an insult it’s not now we change that.
