Thank you so much, Liz. I had to have a mastectomy 1 year ago. Although my tumors were small, I had 3 sites and a mastectomy was recommended. I am Stage 1a so despite the “news” I feel very optimistic about my future. I am 80 and believe it or not, I chose reconstruction and I am thrilled with that choice

Thank you for looking into this more, so worrying when you had no choice of mastectomy ❤

I'm thinking this might be a question of statistics. People who have to have mastectomy might have large cancer, more advanced, and their chances of being cured are lower. And this, not the procedure itself causes the difference in survival.

This is such a valid point. Also I’m sure it depends on the type of cancer too.

It may be that for a person having full surgery may seem to be reassuring in terms feeling better thinking that all has gone out of the body. Sometimes not all the bad tissue goes out withe the surgery and immediately the second surgery is needed. What do you think of a patient's insisting on the full surgery even when doctors say that the partial surgery ensures the same life expectancy?

Thank you - I look forward to hearing more. I had not yet heard of this study and have already had a DMX, so there is no turning back, but still interested…

You always tackle questions that come up in my mind and in others. Bravo. On the flip side where a lumpectomy is an option, I see many women who feel that getting a mastectomy is superior when it is not in terms of survival. I do believe there is a dividing line where the scales tip and a mastectomy is the clear choice. Interested in the exploration of that gray area between.
I personally want my breasts along for the ride just as long as the cancer is not in the driver’s seat.

Thank you Dr. Liz. After my lumpectomy AND having reduction in my other breast, I was told the lump was larger than they thought AND “there was a DUSTING of cancer (?) in said breast in the lower quadrant “. To me, this was a no-brainer: remove them both! If you couldn’t see the cancers because my breasts are so dense, no-way am I going to live in a chronic state of anxiety.
Yes I have heard of that report and it bothers me. Actually, kind of angers me and I don’t really know why. I do know that I am very comfortable in the decision I made.
I hope that what that study is saying is 100% accurate otherwise there will be more unsuspecting deaths. From my personal experience regarding breast cancer, nothing is 100 % accurate. There are still many unknowns and I hope this study isn’t in the stages of using women as guinea pigs. Whew …

I had a lumpectomy, a year later I am recovering from a rebalancing. A mastectomy was never even discussed as an option. I am happy with my decision however if I was faced with the circumstance you were I would make the same decision as yourself. That dusting thing would drive me crazy. Such a learning curve.

Thank you, looking forward to learn more. I had a lumpectomy two years ago, Stage I, ER+, NED/ remission. I'm going for my annual checkup soon. Blessing to all of my pink warrior sisters.
