      I managed to pick up a large shivereana for $40 that was marked at $85 in my favorite shop for months. It was sitting so long because it didn't have great coloring or variegation, but it was also placed farther and farther back in the shop the longer it sat. I took it home and with minimal babying, all the new growth leaves are crazy diverse in color, and I'll be starting propagation soon to make more to sell. Shopping around and waiting is always a good idea unless it is a must have plant

    Thank you for telling it like it is. Subsidizing this expensive hobby is probably all that can be done. 2020 is not coming back. I buy a lot of great cheap plants at farmer's markets. Most of them make it and I have a nice looking living room and bedroom as a result. If I were to kill a $300 rare plant I would be sobbing every time one died.

      Nature grows these little bastards for free and I love nature more way than greenhouses, why would I spend so much for all that?

    The most expensive cutting I bought cost 25€. I will not go above that. Not for a cutting. The most "profitable" plant of all was so far my Hoya Lockii. I bought a cutting a few years ago for around 18€ and I've been able to sell several cuttings all ranging around that amount (15-20€). Considering that I would have bought the plant anyway and that it brings me joy taking care of it I think that was a pretty good investment. It certainly paid for itself, that's nice :)

  • @Sandreline

    What people need to understand is once a plant hits it's peak of popularity, it's only going to go down in price. It's never going to hold a stable price in the long term. And you can't price a plant based on what you paid for it 6-12 months ago.
    The other day I saw a girl trying to sell a (beat) 4-leaf monstera albo for $700 like it was 2020. And the comments were crickets.
    As a very casual hobbyist who isn't super into "rare" plants, my most profitable plants have been my VSOH and my big Scindapsus Exotica. VSOH are so simple to prop on large scale and people in my area still go crazy for them. I've made ~$200 off of an easy-care $30 plant. And the Exotica is just one of those impressive timeless plants. I bought an 10" pot last year for $60. I've made ~$150 selling single rooted cuttings.
    But, like you said, I'm not really making much money. I'm just subsidizing my hobby.

I sell plants in the exact condition you mention in the beginning, visible roots (new growth) and new leaves, and keep seeing hundreds of plants being sold as rootless cuttings, some people even only sell as "fresh cutting" straight from the mother plant... Insane...

    • @JohnSmith-pf8jq
      @JohnSmith-pf8jq Před rokem +1

      Can you please tell me why it's bad? I see people selling fresh cuttings all the time and I feel like it's the only way to get the plant cheaper for me :((

    • @Black_Jack_AOS
      @Black_Jack_AOS Před rokem +1

      @@JohnSmith-pf8jq yes it is cheaper, and yes it may work. But I've had many people coming back to me asking for help or simply telling me "I bought a cutting from someone and it's not growing, it's rotting, it's dieing or ultimately it's dead..." The survival rate of a cutting isn't as high as a rooted, stable plant. Either because the people don't have the setup for a fresh cutting, have problems moving from water to substrate, and I've even seen them arriving dried out from shipping... I mean there are many reasons. Ofc it's cheaper and I understand that most people will prefer a fresh cutting over a rooted stable plant. But in many cases locally I see cutting of the same plant being sold for 30€ and the plant with a few leaves rooted etc costs 50€... In the end what would you choose?

    honestly, i think one of the most profitable ways to make a little on the side with rare plants is probably flipping them. lets say you buy a quite mature plant for 200 bucks as a ''good deal'' you then take a little cutting for yourself and instantly resell the plant for around the price you spend on it (if t was a good price). that way you lost zero money and you got a free rare plant for your self as a cutting that will grow into a plant anyways. but honestly, if you dont plan on ''making money'' but simply: paying for the plants itself, you dont need to sell high prices. if you sell a cutting for 10 bucks.. thats 10 bucks more you have now and since you have the plant and plants grow back anyways its free money to put into other plants.

    Here in my Catholic country, for All Saints Day (it's the day after that shameful, pagan Halloween from America), everyone goes to the graves of their loved ones and leaves them flowers. At that time it is already cold, so Chrysanthemums are bought. Florists prepare for that day, because they earn more on Chrysanthemums than on their regular jobs throughout the rest of the year. It saved and enriched many who lost their jobs. You can never earn so much on rare species, too much investment. Although, some of the wholesale Phalaenopsis growers make great money as well, despite significant investments. I assume that they can easily grow Spathiphyllum wallisii under similar conditions . You can make money on everything that blooms beautifully, not large and doesn't cost much!

    Hi mr. Kill This Plant. I've never bought a plant online before, what is the problem with buying/selling leafless nodes?

    • @KillThisPlant
      @KillThisPlant  Před rokem +15

      The behaviour on the buyers side can lead to: I cannot afford an established plant right now, so I'm going to take a gamble on this. Often when a leafless node is send through the mail, it isn't viable on arrival, or it will take months of struggle to root and finally start producing leaves. You either lose the plant (and your money) or by the time it does root and produce new leaves, the price has dropped so significantly that, if you just waited, the price is now cheaper to buy a larger established plant.
      Behaviour on the sellers side can lead to: I can capitalize on a trending plant right now by selling it now, instead of rooting it myself and providing a safer more stable product to my customer. I know that some of these nodes might not be viable or would take months to root and its not worth my time to try. I can pawn it off on a customer, once it out of my hands, its their problem. I'm just going to straight up scam people and sell these golden pothos nodes as Monstera albo nodes. It keeps working so I'm going to keep doing it.
      When it comes down to it, I believe the cultural shift that covid brought to houseplants lead to an "I need everything and I need it now" culture and it hasn't been positive. Build a community, trade nodes with friends.

      @@KillThisPlant yeah that's true but don't they use heat mats and stuff? I'm not sure what the cost of running a tissue culture setup is lol but I really can't imagine it only being ten dollars. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Maybe BC I'm in a small town in Canada so the shipping alone on the stuff would cost me way more 🤣🤣🤣
