  • A hiker's dilemma... to pole or not to pole?
    IF (big if) I were to ever spend some $$$ on trekking poles, these would be them:

    Let the trekking pole debate commence!

    Without ever having hiked a long trail, I can definitely see the benefit of using trekking poles. Well done.

    Thanks for explaining about poles. Never really knew why people used them. Makes sense now.

      They can be good for city walking too! ;-)

    I don’t really use them but I definitely see the benefit.
    Awesome vid again

    You summed up my mentality EXACTLY - I will always prefer an old, ratty pole that has a story associated with it - any day.
    Kindred spirits, Nick - kindred spirits !!

    Pretty practical wisdom, delivered in your easy and welcoming style, HollywoodâŁïž
    So far, I only use one wooden hiking stick-a Christmas gift from my husband, years ago, when we took a day trip to visit Black Mt. NCâŁïžđŸ˜Žâ€ïž
    That one stick has saved me, more than a few times, and served me well for years, especially, as you mentioned, during Creek crossingsâŁïžđŸ˜ƒđŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ»
    But, so far, I still only day hike, and most of the time without much weight to carry.
    I do see how when a hiker starts doing LASHes or Thrus, and begins to carry fully loaded backpacks, just how beneficial two trekking poles could become, especially in the winter, when
    ice and snow can make hiking pretty diceyâ—ïžđŸ˜ź
    I’ll tell you one thing, going down those 410 stone steps at Laurel Falls, on the AT in TN,
    having 3 or 4 “legs” are definitely better than 2. Or if you are transporting children on your back, on a hike, I think it is wise for hikers to use added stability to a trekâŁïžđŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ»
    Thank you so much for bringing the solid, necessary info to consider, when making hiking,
    and gear-purchase decisions, to the tableâŁïžđŸ˜ŽđŸ„°â€ïžđŸ˜ƒđŸ„ŸđŸ„ŸđŸ„Ÿ

    For longer distances and any bit of rocky terrain or climbing then the answer is always yes. For a day hike that might have a “cleaner” path, I’ll leave them at home.
    I’m a fan of the Cheapies. They get messed up and mangled. It’s the one thing I’ll spend less money on knowing I will need to replace

    One more thing - I don’t even begin to understand the idea of dropping $225 for a set of Leki poles that I will ultimately end up breaking, just from usage.
    I sound cheap, but that’s not it. It’s a matter of being practical.

    • @DollyTheLlama
      @DollyTheLlama Pƙed rokem

      Amen. Past a certain point, I think all you're paying for is flash and branding.

    • @PackAndSoul
      @PackAndSoul  Pƙed rokem

      Oh, I’m definitely cheap, and I make no excuses for it! Even so, crazy how $$$ some of these poles are, even for not cheap people!

    • @ctrawick3
      @ctrawick3 Pƙed rokem +1

      That $200 would be used much more efficiently on a better tent, bigger pack, water system, etc. It’s a personal choice, I get it though, so nothing wrong with paying for poles. It’s just not my gig.

    The duct tape was actually put on there for the purpose of having some tape for repairs on your pack or tent, It is a no-brainer way to carry tape and have it available in an instant. Just like you can wrap some extra paracord on there to have if you need it ... cheap and reliable way to do trailside repair. Just cuz you think it is ugly does not mean it has not got a purpose. You young whippersnappers just don't know all the tricks yet, LOL. JK But that is why it is there. It would not fix the pole, nope.

    • @PackAndSoul
      @PackAndSoul  Pƙed rokem

      Haha there’s no end to what duct tape can fix! I love it :-) thanks for the comment

    I can’t stop commenting
 yes. Hiker trance is the goal and that click-clack repetition is such a rhythm making asset for just cranking out the miles.
    Okay. I’m done.

      LOVE THE COMMENTS! Keep ‘em coming. You know exactly what I’m talking about. You snap out of it and realize you just smashed 10 miles without thinking about it. Love that
