  • Hey Folks, Happy Canada Day Long Weekend from Seaway Whisky Wire! Today I am reviewing an Iconic Canadian Single Malt from and Iconic Canadian Distilley, The Glen Breton 15 Year Old Battle of The Glen. This Canadian Sinle Malt comes from the Glenora Distillery in Nova Scotia Canada where they produced the first North American Single Malt. This Special Edition commemorate the hard fought legal battle between Glenora and the Scotch Whisky Association over of the right to use the the word "Glen". Does this classy Canadian dram offer more than just the taste of victory? I'll sample it and give you my thoughts. Stop by and join me for a dram!
    Cheers!

As someone who's roots are in Cape Breton but grew up on the West Coast I have a very soft spot in my heart for Glenora's Glenbreton. Great job telling the tale of a garbage lawsuit by the S.W.A. Sad that the original owners had to sell because of the legal costs. I visited the distillery 2 years ago while back home to visit family and its a beautiful place. Most enjoyed the 18 year old cask strength Peated Single cask that they were pouring. Great stuff. Great job Tyler 🥃

Thanks for the comment and kind words Matt. I am exited to make a trip to the distillery and try some more expressions from them. Cheers!

I've tried the "Rare" 10yo about once every 5 years since its release in 2003, and I haven't started to like it yet (I didn't try it last year, so I'm a year behind schedule, LOL!) I also tried one of their older expressions the last time I visited Halifax, and didn't consider buying a bottle. But, I did try their Ice 10yo (the one finished in Ice Wine barrels) and absolutely loved it. Of course, I've never seen it in Ontario or Quebec, and I don't think it was even available in Halifax that time. I visited the distillery in 1993 - years before their first release - and got to try some new-make (I don't remember if I liked it, LOL!)

Thanks for the comment Chuck! Neat to hear about all the different expressions you have tried and our experiences with the distillery. I found the 15 to light and flavour with no harshness. I really enjoyed it but unfortunately the bottle must go back to my buddy that lent it to me for review. Otherwise it would be gone after this long weekend. lol. Cheers my friend.

Just watched your review and noticed the SOS coin on your glen cairn! I am a new member of SOS and have a pair of those coins as well. I had the opportunity to tour the Glenora Distillery in 2018 and bought hand-poured Peated expression. It’s excellent but they didn’t continue production. The West Coast Macaloney’s Distillery was also challenged for use f what was claimed to be a Scottish name - even though it is the master distiller’s last name! Lovin’ this whisky journey!

Maple candy, vanilla with a bit of mint on the back end. Sounded really, really good. Cheers!

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this.
I find Glenora whisky has a distinctive signature. Picked up several expressions over the years, and one that was actually quite good was the 'Fiddler's Choice'. I got it as a birthday gift for a friend when out East in 2021, and really wish I had scooped myself a bottle at the time. Fortunately, they're willing to share!
I have the ice wine barrel, cask strength, 10 year old (from that same trip)...excellent, though it was expensive.
My understanding is that Glenora produced the first single malt in North America, followed soon after by the U.S..
And I love that the whole reason Ralfy originally started his channel was because of the S.W.A. vs Glenora fiasco. Now THAT'S one for the history books!
    Cheers Tyler 🥃😀🥃
Hope the Canada Day long weekend is treating you right...

Thanks Marian. It was a great single malt to try. I think it would be awesome to go to the distillery and do a tasting there. The history behind the distillery and the name really add to the lore which I like. Cheers to you and enjoy your Canada Day!

Yeah, the 10 yr is a bottom shelf expression for me. I found it hard to believe it got international acclaim... maybe it's my palate...

I have not heard much about the 10 year old other than from Ralphy
