I visited this wonderful sanctuary in the middle of a busy and crowded city in 2009. Regrettably I will not be able to visit HK again due to health problems. Thanks for making an old man happy.

The only thing I don't understand is it seems as though 'Tang Dynasty' has been used as a blanket term to absorb Japanese innovations in visual aesthetics at Chi Lin, as it is clear Chi Lin makes use of architectural features that were developed in Japan and not in China. Japanese architecture stems from the 'Tang Dynasty' but it developed its own branch of forms that were copied at Chi Lin when the nunnery was built in the 1990s. For example the thatched roof on the cottage and mill at Chi Lin 21:40 is a Japanese aesthetic that has been lifted from Shirakawa-go in Japan. In Shirakawa-go these thatched roofs built around 1500 are needed due to the heavy snow-falls in winter. The Tang Dynasty fell around 700 A.D. and was centered around the capital Xi'an in central China where snow is not frequent, snow is also not common in Hong Kong (only 4 on record). Nearly all Tang Dynasty buildings have been destroyed in China. The 'Chinese' Tang represents architecture that is a lot more grand, less ornate, sober, militaristic, and restrained. Also, genetics show that the bulk of the Asiatic gene-pool in Japan came from central China at the time of the collapse of the Tang Dynasty, which is the exact time when Japan experienced its first documented cultural records (or the Yayoi period). This means that when the Tang Dynasty fell, the court essentially moved its noblemen and women/clergymen etc. to Japan where the Jomon people already lived, a fact that is proven by genetics (Japanese share more genetics markers with people from central China than Northern China). This fact comes in conflict with the outside common notion that Japanese migrated from Asia through the Korean Peninsula (although some did come from Korea, particularly in southern Japan which is closest to Korea). This makes sense as the Tang Dynasty was invaded by people from the north. The Jomon spoke the proto-Japanese language that had no written records. Modern Japanese are a mix of Jomon and Yayoi genetics. This means that aesthetic innovations in Japan evolved as a mix of Jomon (who used the thatched roofs for the roofs of the oldest Shinto temples) and Yayoi principles (Tang Dynasty aesthetics) that are completely unrelated to Chinese aesthetics/genetics but are claimed as such at Chi Lin. Chi Lin is essentially a Japanese style complex in Hong Kong.

Well it is said Japan has theTang heritage and Korea Ming's heritage. By the way, Korean's architecture are from China with of course some evolution, japanese architectures from Korea and China, so we can have many explanations involving the 3 countries. And Yes in one point, there are a lot of things coming from China to Japan and come back from Japan to China. And Yes Japon gave a lot "cachet" to Tang's Architecture.
