    I bought a Brompton Electric after watching your previous video and it's really helped this year. I've driven trains all the way through the lockdowns and my commute to work is a hilly 10k. Having the bike with me means I can get home after a shift without much effort even when there's no public transport running. I've got a car and non electric bikes but cycling gives me time to mentally unwind and the electric means I'm not walking in the house at 3am sweating and wide awake when I have to get to sleep because I'm at work 12 hours later.

    You could always upgrade your old Brompton with a Swytch kit. Then you needn't argue with Nathan as to who gets the electric when you are out together. I have electrified my 20 year old Brompton with a Swytch kit and I'm very impressed with the result. I use it a lot more now, as a replacement for local car journeys. It would be a very interesting comparison you could make between the official Brompton Electric and the Swytch Brompton.

      My Brompton is my absolute favourite go-to bike. Pure pedal power for mine, so I am slower than many, but it is the bike in my garage that I enjoy the most and does so many things well that I hardly ever ride my other ones now. Have done over 5,000 miles on my M6L in 2020, so it has certainly been used and consequently represents good value for money too👍🙂

    Yeah, it’s been a funny old year for changes. I originally ordered a Swytch kit for my Brompton (it’ll arrive one day!) so I could commute and leave the car at home a couple of days a week. Now I’m working from home full time and don’t really need the car anymore. I’m using the Brompton for local trips and hopefully when the kit arrives I’ll use it for longer trips round Bristol. Everywhere is down hill from home, so I could do with the help!
    Thanks for the video and I’m looking forward to the upgrade vid.

      Bristol does have some hills. I'm up hill all the way home from the centre. It was a good work out when I was commuting but sometimes I just need transport not a work out so that's why having an ebike as an option is so great now. It would be great to hear how you get on with the Swytch kit, you'll likely get yours before I get one!

      Don't let the naysayers get to you. The first time I rode an e-bike was about 2/3 of the way across Canada when we were camping behind a bike shop. I was amazed at it, it was soooo much fun I couldn't stop smiling, and that's saying a lot because I'd just found out my cat had died. They are so much fun and you still get the benefits of moving your body and getting your heart rate up, it's just more fun. Some of them are even hard to tell they are e-bikes at first glance, they are getting very stealthy and as battery tech gets better they will become hard to tell apart.

    I kind of had the opposite experience where I was driving a Smart for a few years (albeit the electric one which is awesome to be clear) but I got rid of it to cycle everywhere again. I haven’t really had the full car-free experience yet because I haven’t had to go anywhere outside a 5 mile radius since March. But I definitely don’t miss driving at all so far, and that surprised me.
    I took voluntary redundancy when my job wanted me to come back before the furlough was ending and I knew covid was going to get much worse again. And then the scheme was extended just after that. Fortunately I can live on my savings for a while though so I feel fortunate for that, and it’s definitely nice not feeling like I’m dragging around a ball and chain in the form of a car and all the associated costs.

      Hi Chirs! I've wonderd with the Smart electric is like. I have a feeling it might be quicker off the start.
      I didn't miss driving (Or the stress of owning a car) when I moved to the UK. I remember after a couple years having a bit of an a-ha moment walking somewhere looking at everyone in traffic and got a bit angry about the lie we've all been sold about the freedome of cars and how our cities, lives and countries have bent over backwards buidling for them.
      Glad to hear you are hanging in there with the covid situation. Everyone seems to be experincing it in very different ways.

    • @christill
      @christill Před 3 lety

      @@OneLessCar The Smart EQ (electric) is better in every way. It accelerates faster, it’s smooth, it doesn’t vibrate, it’s silent, there’s instant throttle response (I drove a petrol one when my car was serviced and they’re dangerous at roundabouts and junctions. So slow to respond.)
      You can charge it at home easily if you have a driveway. I don’t know if Pure Electric have charging points at their office but I imagine they would be the type of company to do it now or very soon, just in case you needed a top up. The short-ish range is the only real negative. But when you’re used to riding an e-Brompton, the car range will seem like quite a lot. And these days there are so many chargers it’s basically no big deal. When I got my first EV in 2016 it was a doable challenge. Now they’re everywhere.

    But now I have to make 4 kilometers with somes littles hills (I have some computer and somewath-heavy stuff to move os yeah little hills can become big in mind lol), plus the train to take, and then some little kilometers to reach work.

    At least with an engine, a Brompton is a less horrible bike (I own a 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton, modified down to 9,35 kilo, with mudguards, as a Dane) But the small wheels gives much more rolling resistance during use, and even if it may do what other bikes do, it is with a lot more effort than an ordinary bike! Hi,
    Single owner Brompton owner, I would like purchase a second brompton an electric. So my partner can cycle as well. Maybe get a child trailer for out little one.
    At twice the price of a standard m3L or m6L, do you think Brompton will drop the price of the electric next year?
    What range do you get on moderate hills? We live in a valley.
    My partner is similar build to you. I'm 83kg.
    PS I follow the pure electric videos as well. Your doing good work there. Very informative.
    I have a m365 pro halfords edition as well. I find it great for a 4km short run to the supermarket with a backpack for the shopping.
    For longer runs to further away supermarket and other retail. its the brommie and the basket bag.
    I find the m365 gets tiring on longer runs, the constant bumps with no suspension and getting cold from standing.

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't think the price will drop any time soon. The battery is about £500 of the cost so batteries getting cheaper will help. The government subsidies that I've heard whispers about could help though, and the money is better spent than subsidising electric cars (IMHO). The real problem over the next year will be having enough supply as there are supply chain issues in the cycling industry at the moment.
      Range wise I get more than what they state (the range given by Brompton is 30 - 70km) on flat rides and I get over the low end of what Brompton quotes on hillier rides. I should have access to a new soon so hopefully, I can do a range test with that. My battery is 2 years old now so it doesn't likely have it's full capacity anymore.
      Interesting to hear how you use your e-scooter. It's great to have options! I think you are right about long rides, they are tiring on those little wheels and standing is a bit boring too (and cold as you said in winter!), I think I will always prefer bikes for that reason :)

      Brompton is definitely more fun than the scooter. I prefer it. The scooter is great for when I'm feeling lazy.
      I think the most efficient electric transport mode is the bike, scooter 2nd and electric car last for 10 to 15 k commuting distance s. I would like to get an electric car eventually for the 77k journey to work.

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  Před 3 lety +1

      The six speed set up is 2 gear levers one to control 3 internal hub gears and one to control 2 external ones (also on the back). I find I almost exclisvely use just the 3 internal gears as there is little in the difference of the 2 external ones. The one advantage of the six speed that was brought to my attention recently was that it gives you more options should you run out of battery our if you want to occasionally use the bike without the assist.
      The 2 speed is lighter and cheaper though so if you don't have to worry about hills than it's a pretty safe bet.

      @@Joe-lb8qn They don't do a 3 speed electric. The hub on the 3 speed non electric is not as wide a range as on the electric version. The derailleur on the 6 speed allows for in-between gears as well as an extra top and bottom gear.
      The derailleur on the Bromton is much the same as the chain tensioner that they all have anyway. The only difference is that the jockey wheels can float and there is a chain pusher.

      The 6 speed is great, and it's good to know you plan on cycling for many many more years!
      It's been 50/50 😀 but the agreement is the person on the electric has to keep it in eco mode 😊

    Hi. Greetings from Argentina. How do you compare in terms of confort an effort the Bromton witj a 20 inch foldable bike such as Tern or Dahon?

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  Před 3 lety +1

      It's hard for me to say as I've ridden the Tern GSD but it's a cargo bike and has much fatter tires. It's a completely different ride. The Brompton can go fast if you push. On the standard non electric one I had someone try to draft me on a bike path and he commented how hard I was to keep up with even though my bike was so little 😀

    We still love you! I love my ebike. I commute 24 miles RT. I'm thinking about getting a Cargo bike next.

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  Před 3 lety

      I've had a few rides on some cargo bikes for work, they are great workhorses I think the TERN is the only one I could currently fit in the house 😀 due to the ability to stand on its end. Any particular ones you have your eyes on?

    After years of using it, how is the battery?

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  Před 3 lety

      Still great, nothing noticable in regards to loss of raneg, but I don't have a consistant ride that I do regularly to really measure. I'll get the battery health checked next time I'm at the bike shop. Also since working at Pure Electric I've learned how to better look after the battery so hopefully I'll have it for a while with good range :)

      Good idea. It's a pretty chaotic set up at the moment, There's 2 road bikes, 2 touring bikes, 2 Bromptons, 2 e-MTBs, and 2 e-scooters, it's a bit like Noah's ark for 2 wheels. Once I get some decent lighting and calm down I'll do a little tour in the story tab 😀

    Why not save the fights and convert your other Brompton with a Swytch electric wheel kit?

    • @OneLessCar

      I'm hoping to get the chance to try it out this year. The first generation of them I've heard was unreliable so I'm waiting to hear what the new one that just came out is like. Also hoping Pure Electric will carry it so I can try it out via work. 🤞😊

    3 k ??? We use miles in England. Nothing insults an old Englishman than foreigners not using imperial measurements.

      Cyclist particularly those that do any form of competitive cycling tend to use metric as the courses are measured out in km.

    Why dont she wear a helmet ? she is not showing a good example to other cyclist who watch her video's. Some car drivers are just crazy they may have the whole road yet some still insist on overtaking much too close to cyclist the worst offenders are lorry drivers. a cyclist head is as delicate as an egg you have to protect it with a helmet.
