D&D - Alignment Consistency (Or the lack there of)

Two adventures with the lovely alignment of Lawful Good need to acquire an item called the King's Dagger. They don't roll very high and try to play good cop and incrementally switch to bad cop. Basically they have an alignment complex that totally needs help.
