As a law-abiding Filipino citizen, I can say that I can express myself freely, which means I have full freedom. If somebody thinks that freedom of expression without boundaries must be in the Philippines. This will cause violence and division. Happy Independence Day everyone.

I love the the topic of the video it showcase talaga yung difference of freedom sa status ng tao you can see na pag living in a comfortable life like students studying in private and prestigious schools they can say that the we are totally free, unlike sa mga public schools mulat sila sa katotoohanan kasi they are seeing the real happenings because they are experiencing the hardship in life firsthand

Being poor does not translate to being ripped off of freedom in a democratic sense though. Yes, they're restricted to limited options when it comes to lifestyle and commodities (just like in any other democratic-capitalist society) but they can still express themselves freely.

Gaining Freedom is Great. But having unrestricted freedom is a threat to society. Sobrang kalayaan takes away the discipline, Discipline starts from restricting yourself from doing something, too much freedom negates that. Lahat ng sobra ay masama.

Hi Jessica, Filipinoes fought for independence for so many times in so many events from many conquerors and invaders. I grew up during the Marcos era and this is the most exciting time in any life of Filipinoes. I was there during the EDSA revolution to obtain independence from a tyrant leader for 20 years. Independence is so hard to achieve and for me though I am residing abroad (US), PH is still not free for we still have insurgencies, corruptions, foriegn country interfering with our affairs and the huge debt that we had. How wonderful it is to hear the word "independence" but it is so hard to get. Oneday I hope Philippines will be free from all of its woes and foes. Salamat Jessica, MABUHAY PILIPINAS!

Maligayang Kaarawan ng Kalayaan! Great topic for a conversation starter! I think the students responded well too and I also agree that these kinds of conversations need to happen consistently at a larger scale.
I think as a young country, our sense of independence is not that well-established yet, as we continue to rediscover who we are as Filipinos. Our sense of identity as Filipinos is inarguably fragile due to our long colonial history. Using these realizations as a catalyst for change is one small step. I think one of the many ways we could strengthen our nationalism is to educate ourselves more about our pre-colonial history, our culture and language. Another way is to spread awareness about social issues and fight indifference. Complacency kills democracy. Independence comes with responsibilities and hard work. We can’t demand reform from our government while we sit back and expect change to happen without being open to changing ourselves. We have to own our responsibilities as citizens and take the necessary action when the situation calls for it. We have to ask ourselves, how can we contribute to our society? There’s definitely strength in numbers and we can only grow & keep our independence as a nation if we continuously fight for it.
There’s so much power in knowing our authentic selves. When we strive to understand ourselves, we allow the discovery of our individual strengths. When we know our strengths, there’s a much better chance for us to develop the confidence to incorporate these strengths into our community. When we combine our skills & talents, we could cohesively work more towards our envisioned future. We need to ask ourselves, what steps do we need to take in order to achieve those goals?

Not allowing other countries to intervene on our laws. We can vote, we can travel anywhere, we can express our thoughts (Responsibly). Freedom in a sense of limitations, follow rules like, we do not steal, we do not commit murder on anyone and other violation of against Filipino people. We need to follow the rules and regulations.

The concept of not wanting to be judged for your opinion has nothing to do with freedom. It boils down to insecurity and desire for validation from others. Being free to your opinion has nothing to do with whatever others have to say. Judgement and criticisms are common in self expression and communication, and it can work both ways to propel somebody or bring somebody down. It all lies in the mindset. As long as you are sure of who you are, the disagreements and criticisms would just be stepping stones for you to be better. If we are surrounded by people who would just tolerate whatever we do, how will we grow? Disagreement, criticisms and not wanting to tolerate something should be common in a world that wants freedom because freedom wouldn't always equate to peace and tolerance. Variety and difference in opinion isn't hate and should be a norm in a free world.

Philippine independence was brought about being released from foreign colonization. However, although generations today are now freer compared from before, you can still see that Filipinos are still shackled by the negative cultures that we inherited from the past, just go to any government agencies and you will still see the political inhibitions that restrain Filipinos to be really true and expressive of them selves, - may takot padin mag salita Ng totoo at tapat Kasi may matatapakan na either nirerespekto, kamag anak - and that just "going with the flow" vibes (eg; "kung Yan Ang ginagawa Ng lahat edi Tau din" mentality really just proves we're not that yet independent or liberated. - Pa shout out Naman diyan Miss Jessica Lee! More self-Discipline in a fair modern-oriented and fairly representative country seeking compromise along the pathway to progress is the epitome of the complex concept of 'Independence'.
Hit'ler's Germany had so-called economic *self-reliance* for the most part and autonomy from outside political influence... due to it's raw hegemonic power it could dictate upon other regional states to comply with such unilateral rules of the game coming from the top.
But that's truly not Independence either. Very true, the concept of 'Independence' is highly complex and can't be described in any brief soundbite nutshell of sorts. Whereas, 'Independence' is more than merely describing the state of a nation of people striving to be more politically autonomous vis-a-vis outside geopolitical influence , or economic influence... Independence is far more comprehensive in terms of the track and pathway allowing for individual spiritual autonomy, voice in the social cultural representation and needs of society (without being suppressed by an iron-fisted corrupted central authority) and support for an educational academic system that sresses a responsible and sustainable pro-nationhood society, along with academic autonomy again, from any heavy handed corrupted central authority dictating the curriculum and rules of teaching, etc... imho

Freedom is free from doing anything what we want BUT without breaking or entering other's freedom, property and liberty. It means freedom is always partnered with responsibility. You have a freedom but you also have responsibility. If you break the law, then it is not about freedom anymore but IT IS ALL ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY. In regard with Philippines being fully independent, depends on the context. If you compare it with the past, i can say that there is alreadt change and we are really independent. If yoy compare it to other countries with authoritarian regime, i can also say we are really free. BUT i cant deny that there is still inequalities and some of our minority is still faced with discrimination, and not totally free. I am not only talking about politics but the society also. We can see that everyday and we cant deny that we also contributing to it whether it is our intention or not. But i believe that Philippines is still a young country and i believe we are still on the process. We can be able pass this stage. But the important is to remind ourselves that we must be thankful for all those who lost their lives for these generations to enjoy the liberty we now enjoying like debating in youtube comments. Happy Independence Day Guys!!! 🎉🎉🎉

This is honestly a good topic to talk about. Our colonized years were pure torment for the people-lands and rights were taken away from us, and we were obliged to follow and obey the “colonizers” without having any choice to decline, with wealth or without. And even if we are already free from these colonizers, just like what one of the students said in the video, some of us are still in a colonial/westernized mindset, which is true and sad. Other than that, I think that we still aren’t truly free as Filipinos because despite being able to say and do what is want is we’re still “being limited” and “restricted” by others or the by who is “higher” especially when what we say or do doesn’t align with theirs. So, just like what was mentioned in the references, we are honestly still in the process of achieving true freedom. #HAURizal

Lol, the girl who said most companies in the Philippines are owned by Chinese, I was like, “Whut?” These are Chinese Filipinos. They ARE Filipinos. They are not foreigners. Why are we othering our own compatriots? In fact, I would say the Philippine economy isn’t free because the Constitution doesn’t actually allow foreigners to own businesses in the Philippines. That’s what needs to be changed. We need to liberalize the Philippine economy further to attract investments, induce competition, and improve services here. This could also lead to a rise in wages.
Interesting how many of the students are refraining from explicitly naming the United States as the country that continues to exert influence over the Philippines. Lol. In fact, we just allowed them to have more military bases here and our government remains to be their lapdog.
I would agree with those who say that we must revamp our government system according to our own culture, and that is why I am supportive of federalizing the Philippines. Because culture wise and geography wise, it is SOOO obvious that that’s how this country must be governed. In fact, our current system is a remnant of the previous system used by the Americans and Spaniards to rule the country. It’s just that now, it is our political elites that is suppressing the Filipino plebeian.
Freedom is not freedom from responsibility. While the country guarantees your freedoms, that doesn’t mean you are allowed to trample on other people’s freedoms, too. Dangerous drugs can harm communities. In fact, most Asian countries have WAAAYYYY STRICTER rules about drugs. In some countries, there’s death penalty. So it is understandable why Duterte was very draconian in tackling such issue. And I support it. In fact, I hope the police sustains the fight against these substances because they ruin societies. Just look at how China was ruined by opium prior to the Opium Wars. Marijuana is ok, but synthetic substances is a big NO NO for me.
If you need to ruin your body to maximize your happiness, then there’s something wrong with how you think. Not that I care, you can ruin your body to your heart’s content as long as you’re not ruining other people’s lives. But I am still against lax policies against dangerous drugs because if we allow the proliferation of drugs in the country, then EVERYONE will have easy access to them. The world doesn’t revolve around just the hedonistic, libertarian few.
When it comes to red tagging, let me tell you, I've had my fair share of exposure to it during my time at UP. And let's be real here, plenty of UP students and professors are die-hard communist sympathizers. I mean, I was even part of some leftist group back in my college days, believe it or not. So, listen up: if you choose to throw your support behind communists, you better damn well accept the consequences that come with it, which includes being labeled as a communist yourself, no matter how strongly you claim to feel about the ideology. After all, it's your own decision to endorse or even slightly back a movement that thrives on terror and criminal activities. So quit your whining and understand that freedom doesn't mean you're exempt from the responsibilities that come with it.
I’m still of leftist persuasions but I also now understand that extremism is not for me nor will it solve our complex social issues that require working together.
The Philippines is a complex case. We have a lot of freedoms, but in terms of our mentality, we never truly decolonize. But then again, we are such a young country. Like one of the students said, Filipino nationalism is relatively new. So our search for freedom is still a work in progress.

Freedom is a responsibility and a priviledge. The job of the goverment is to govern, to not just let people do whatever they want since we are free to do whatever we want. Law is created to ensure equality that no one should be above it (though this is not always the case, but PH is doing well and continuesly improving) and that it follows and live up to the culture of Filipinos.
Point Taken: The EJK is not a good thing that has had happen in the past but people are still allowed to voice their opinions, we can see this in SOCMEDs and any other media outlet. EKJ is not just goverment as there are a lot of factors driving this case such as politics, drugs, business and so much more. The important is, we have independent judicial bodies that take care of this issues.
Philippines is not perfect but we are improving. The government is not to blame for doing its job, it's the people that being influenced by other culture specially western that needs to be observe as FREEDOM is now interpreted differently and that we are forgetting what it really means to be FREE.

To those of you who blame Filipinos' "lack of discipline" for the way that we are now, you sound just like your colonizers. We have agency. We're capable of self-governance. We're not 'barbarians' or uncivilized people. It's just that the system is built to favor only the ruling elite & the Imperial US; to make ordinary Filipinos compete with one another for certain rights (e.g., access to education) and resources that should never even have to be solicited from "those in power' (even this phrase makes you think) to begin with.
I wish Jessica had elaborated on her answer, because it was SO spot on! The Philippines is never really independent, we are within the confines of US neo-colonialism (bagong porma ng kolonyalismo) and imperialism: we're still under the systematic control of the Imperial US through American foreign policies established during our "transition to independence" that exists UNTIL NOW. These were created to exploit our resources and serve American interests, so the Philippines remains stunted and the people remain poor, because these policies prevent the country from developing its own national industries. Even our education system is still very much Americanized to this day.
Maganda na yung mga ideya natin ng 'independence,' 'kalayaan,' o 'ahensya' ay situated within the larger structures that (historically & currently) govern our public lives. Because even these micro-manifestations of unfreedom that most of these students enumerated (tulad ng red-tagging, freedom of speech, atbp.) ay rooted sa mas malalaking estruktura na hindi lang natin napapansin ay matagal na tayong ginigipit bilang isang bansa. This is also why we need our General Education courses lalo na yung humanities and social sciences! Lahat ng "subjective" (ika nga ng isa) experiences natin ay naka-connect sa wider social fabric na ginagalawan natin - whether you're an engineer or a chef, o kung ano pa man. Kaya quits na ang pagrereklamo tungkol sa GE subjects ha. Hahahaha oki yun lang sensya sa nobela.
Thank you Jessica for initiating such important conversations!
