    I was "thinking" for 7 years. No regrets. No satisfaction. No sorrows. No proud.
    They just went away. I'm still here.

    I enjoyed A Coffee in Berlin. It’s a long time since I saw film like that this that goes absolutely nowhere in terms of plot but it’s a nice relief after some of the usual high-tension I often watch. I actually did feel a little bit of tension from time to time thinking something would go wrong and in fact our poor laid-back hero continually meets nut jobs or people you think could be friendly …until they go nuts. Berlin, of course, HAS to be in b&w, so cue references to Wenders of Alice in the Cities, especially the view out of the window over the elevated railway, not to mention Wings of Desire. I felt most sorry about, and for, the girl from his old school who is obsessed with being fat and is as thin as a rake when they re-find each other. Such a shame that she is so unstable. That looked like it could have been a really nice relationship. I got the Taxi Driver reference early on, but the film actually reminded me a bit of Scorsese’s brilliant After Hours, but it didn’t want to be quite that kooky and sustained. I'd say this a movie that goes nowhere but it's worth the trip!

    Why would they translate the German title "Oh boy"- which was obviously already in English- into "A Coffee in Berlin"?!? What the heck?

    • @futuresworld
      @futuresworld Před 5 lety +4

      (super delayed reply, I know), but Germany is equally guilty of such random title changes. "Horrible Bosses" became "Kill the Boss" in Germany.

      Tom schilling walks into a bar near the end of the film. Seconds after he sits down, an old man begins to pester him. After a few sharp rejections, he finally lets the old man tell him a story. It ends with a harrowing tale about Kristallnacht. After admitting that his father threw a stone through the window of the very bar they’re sitting in, the old man says, “I still remember clearly that at one point I started to weep. Now, guess why? Because I thought that, with all the broken glass, I couldn’t ride my bike anymore.”
      With this scene, A Coffee in Berlin risks descending into the moist affectation it ridicules, but it manages to sail just clear of such hypocrisy. The old man’s story is modest and believable - and it’s analogous to Nico’s situation. He spends too much time in a small, conceited world of his own construction, oblivious to the higher realities - and pleasures - of life. Just as the old man didn’t appreciate the significance of the glass on the street, Nico has yet to discover the significance of his life. The British philosopher A.C. Grayling is fond of saying, “The meaning of life is what we make it.”

      @musicalfairy91 Před 10 lety +2

      Nope I wouldn't say that. I've already seen in it when it came out in Germany (2012 I think) and it's just brilliant! Not that Woody Allen isn't usually quite brilliant too, but this film has a completely different vibe to it imo. And the acting is exquisite, Tom Schilling really is a great talent! And if you're not interested in the story you can watch it just for the pictures of Berlin ;) I think it was maybe the music that made you think of Woody Allen.

      musicalfairy91 Yes, it must be the music! Here's a review printed on the back of the dvd: "Melds the slacker cool of Jim Jarmusch with the jazz-scored comedy of early Woody Allen."

    One of the most annoying films I've ever seen, trying too hard to be an edgy art student project.
    The characters were plain and cliche, the plot was too forced.
