- Birmingham is the only place on earth with the three ingredients to make iron, but it's unique aspects don't end there. This city that wasn't even founded until after the Civil War has grown to become the largest in the state by metro population. It's been fascinating to learn about and I'm excited to share it with you. Thank you for watching: Birmingham Overview | An informative introduction to Birmingham, Alabama.

I visited Birmingham a little while ago and I was pretty shocked at it's size. It's a legit city.
Not all of Alabama is just farmland haha! We also have rockets in Huntsville
NHL & NBA should just include newest hockey expansion teams in Birmingham, Alabama!🏟🏟🏟🏟🏟🏟🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
Birmingham is a beautiful city. I hope it reaches it's full potential one day.
Yeah I hope it does as well!
It look like it's slowly heading in that direction.
@@vilheard3030 I was born & raised there. Every time things start going in the right direction, B'ham manages to gank itself.
@@jrlove1815 that's terrible, sounds like Auburn football haha. I'd like to see Auburn reach their full potential in my lifetime.
WRONG! IT IS A SLUM CITY!
I recently traveled to Birmingham from Houston for a football game. They’ve just built a new Stadium and Arena in the downtown. It was a really cool city. My buddy live in a new condo highrise tower at the Courtland Vista
That’s cool!
I'm in bham.. Cortland vista is a nice highrise real cool spot
I studied at UAB and it was a real cool place to be. I liked the Southern culture and the polite and easy going people there.
greeting from uk birmingham
B-Ham has a world-class children’s science center and museum in downtown--McWayne Childrens Science Center and Museum. It’s AMAZING for kids and adults too!!
That sounds awesome! Thanks for pointing that out!

Skate park in Uptown is insane!!!
Check it out on CZcams.
Nice! Another city that I feel isn't talked about too much. Great video as usual!
Yeah it was really interesting to learn about! Thank you for the comment, as usual!
It isn’t, really!!
Bham has everything one needs when traveling what I like about Bham
Learning about the resources for iron makes me want to play Settlers of Catan 🤓 very interesting video! Thanks City Geek!
Lol I didn't think about that but now I want to play Catan too! Thanks!
Being a city geek myself, can’t believe I’m just now coming across your page!!? Definitely a new sub here! Great informative video! Can’t wait for you to get to my cities Louisville (birthplace city) and Lexington (home city)!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Well in that case I’m really glad you found my channel! Thanks for the sub btw! I’ll be doing a video on Louisville before the end of the year 👍
Thanks for this informative video. we want to visit this summer.
Watching from Texas
Did you come yet?? I can give you suggestions
Good job about my home town. Thank you!
Thank you!
I live in a city outside of Birmingham, we have a great state and a great city. But just like all we have crime and city decay.
You should have mentioned the world class culinary scene. It is a Foodie paradise, One of George Zimmer's favorite places.
You're probably right that I should have added that. Thanks for the feedback!
A friend from St.Louis recently visited the city and said he was totally surprised by the number of high-end restaurants in the city .
Great shots and nice narration!
Cool stats and facts! ❤
I've only passed through Birmingham so it was nice to see this overview. I've never been involved in the steel industry, but coming from Pittsburgh I'll agree with a few other commenters that it sounds like you're talking about making steel.
16TH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH
Birmingham made iron and steel. It was once nicknamed "Steel City." Steel is gone but there is still some iron industry there.
Extra note: steel is an iron alloy
Not sure if you’ve visited yet since most of this could be grabbed online but it’s worth a visit to really take it all in. There’s other areas with smaller but noticeable historic skyscrapers in the neighborhoods surrounding the area. Interesting fact but the FAA limits the height of buildings downtown due to the proximity of the airport and it being located in a valley which limits runway approaches.
My hometown let's GOOOOO!!!!!! 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
I loved Trimtab Brewing ❤
Ive been to that motorcycle museum, it was super super cool but I didn’t know it was the largest in the world!!
Alabama vs auburn use to play in Birmingham for many years that’s why it’s called the iron bowl (Mobile,Alabama) roll tide
I’m a big college football fan but I didn’t make that connection. That’s super interesting! Thanks for the comment!
@@CityGeek no problem glad to share that info
Great video again! Can’t wait to see you do Buffalo one day
Thank you! Buffalo has actually been on my mind recently given the Bills success this year so I’ll be sure to do it soon 😊
Well done for 1,000 subscribers
Thank you!
I'm glad you commented on the MSA, which is all any city goes by now. Huntsville is a beautiful city, but it's small. I live in Birmingham and would never move there. The MSA of Huntsville is about 490,000, and Birmingham's is over 1.1 million.
Actually the true Huntsville metro population is 879,315. The number you see on Google is outdated and leaves out several towns that have recently been added.
You didn't show the city's new park in the city. It's huge and very nice.
I just looked that up and it seems really cool. Thanks for pointing that out!
Cool video, hopefully the skyline gets a huge boost, there is a proposal for a 48 story 700 foot tower on the table, tbh the skyline looks bigger than Memphis already
Thanks! That’d be cool. Hopefully it ends up being built. And I’d agree that it does look bigger than Memphis
As a resident I’m not too keen on it, I think you’re referring to the block. It’s nice but it’s design is really uncanny of every other building and also there just isn’t enough demand for a whole skyscraper. Who knows though maybe in the future someday.
@@nickoli0101 tbh I think the time is now Birminghams skyline hasn't changed in over thirty years, a signature tower would be beautiful and definitely change the skyline in a major way
@@tthorough4741 Definitely agree
They still thinking about doing "the Block"?
I have fam down in Bham go down about once or twice every two years
Oh cool! Yeah I have some friends who live there and they really like it. Thanks for the comment!
Vulcan visits Electra and that's why we have so many potholes. :D -Sincerely, a local. Oh hey, I can see my job in this video.
😮
Was about to comment because I was born and raised there and lived there many years but I remembered what my parents taught me about not saying anything if I can't say anything positive.
lol whats wrong about it? i've never been there
@@KP99 I've lived in BHM most of my life. The crime is very bad in some areas - especially west of downtown. However, the improvements being made here over the past 10 years have amazed me. We are hosting the World Games this summer and everywhere you look things are being spruced up.
Cool! The Minnesota Vikings actually almost moved to Birmingham
That’s interesting! I didn’t realize that
It wasn't called Birmingham in Viking Times, in fact I dought there was a town there at that time. Birmingham Alabama was named after Birmingham UK, the UK's second largest City by population of 1.5 million + people in Victorian times because of Birmingham UK's reputation as a top industrial city of the time.
Dr. Lemak says he still regrets not purchasing the franchise and moving it here.
I was looking for the OG Birmingham in ENGLAND. I always end up in videos about the USA...
Lol sorry! My brother currently lives in the OG Birmingham so I’ve been thinking about eventually doing a video on that city
Lol. That’s weird because Birmingham, England is a lot larger, right? Not to mention older. Anyway, living in Birmingham and advertising online I end up with a lot of British followers. 😂😂
@@mistylee717 Birmingham in Great Britain is 150 miles sq and has a population of over 1.5 million citizens and is the UK's second largest city after London and is what Birmingham Alabama was named after.
@@mistylee717 Birmingham UK is the second largest City in the UK in population size with an area of 150 sq miles and 1.5 million + citizens and goes back to Anglo Saxon Times being called Beormingham which meant the the Homestead of the tribe of Beomha and the name changed over the years to Bermingham to the present day spelling of Birmingham. The spelling as you pronounce your Birmingham with the emphasis on Bir- Ming- HAM as in Ham and Birmingham Alabama was named after Birmingham UK in Victorian times.
@@mistylee717 Birmingham UK is the Uk's second largest City with a population of 1.5 million citizens so is a bit large than Birmingham Alabama USA, but Birmingham Alabama was named after Birmingham UK.
Hopefully by the time you post a new video you will be at 1000 subs!

Waw very nice...done subscribe...from mam Lyn o ..
It’s humorous the way you pronounce Appalachian

Do a video on Louisville!
I love that idea! I’ll add it to the queue 😊

Civil Rights Museum? 16th Street Baptist Church? Kelly Ingram Park?
Right?? And the civil rights Walking tour. All must see things if you come here. The statues in the park are amazing and so sobering.
Well, just go 'head and tell me stuff I don't know about my home city then! I didn't know about the motorcycle museum!
It's in Leeds, 16 miles outside of Birmingham.
Looks nicer than Birmingham in the UK 😂😂
Where did you get that idea from, they actualy look similiar in style and looks
I'm from Birmingham UK so thought I wouid look at the USA namesake
I think Birmingham is the largest city still, Montgomery is just growing quicker. That’s what I’ve always been taught anyway. I checked real quick on my phone and Birmingham only has 100 people more so it may not be true much longer lol
That’s interesting! I’ll have to make a video on Montgomery. Thanks for the comment!
@@CityGeek Huntsville is officially the largest city in Alabama as of the 2020 census. However, BHM metro is by far the largest metro in the state.
Birmingham has 1.1 million in the metro area very close to each other The Cities surrounding it are very close. Same size as New Orleans Huntsville is the 2nd largest now
Birmingham has had for several years people moving out to the suburbs whereas the opposite has happened in Huntsville. I don’t live in the city limits but consider myself a Birminghamian. A lot of it depends on how much land-grabbing a city does. Long ago Birmingham went on land grabs and annexed nearby areas. There was so much pushback surrounding suburbs responded by doing the same thing. So for a long time there’s nowhere for Birmingham to grow land wise.
Metro area is determined by what percentage of people in an area travel into the downtown to work. By that measure, Birmingham is far and away the larger city.
Actually after the final census count, Birmingham is now the third largest city behind Huntsville and Montgomery.
Birmingham used to be a really beautiful and safe city. Now (2023) it's really run down and a bit ghetto. It's heartbreaking
It's never been a utopia, but yeah crime is higher than ever
I searched this up because that’s where Morales’s family went in the walking dead
what about Michael Jordan he played for the Brimingham barons he did thet in space jam
True he did it in reality in 1994 after bqnnoucef his pre retirement

All true but ask a local before venturing about, many areas are dangerous. High crime and murder rate in the northern and western areas.
What would be a good area to find a bed and breakfast?
How simplistic, and obvious.
There's nothing about Birmingham that impresses me
When was the last time you were here?
Its the pittsburgh of the south just like Miami is the hollywood of the south
LOL the 3 ingredients to make iron.
Iron is an element. It's 1 ingredient.
Yes, should have said "steel."
@@drc3po that’s ok, this is the second video today where they said iron. 😂
Not much to do in Birmingham , lots crime , there trying to clean it up lots lofts condos goin in but still ranks around top 10.most dangerous city's each year
There's plenty to do in Birmingham!!!!!!!!
That's because of poverty inconvenience inequality.
