I’m a white woman who grew up in the ghetto with drug addict parents that didn’t even raise me. I grew up and struggled daily to get ahead or even be on the level of others. It’s not about black or white.. it’s about money. I broke that cycle and now have 4 educated, successful, and most importantly THANKFUL children. They saw my struggle and it drove them harder to be better. If you change the way you look at things.. the things you look at change
My story is very similar.. I can’t imagine how many thousands and thousands and thousands are just like that and are white. I got no money from my parents after they were gone or anything. Blacks always love to say that we have generational wealth.? we are talking about a small percentage of white people that have that and enough money. In the end in my opinion, that so many blacks are the way they are is their own fault. It’s just that simple. Obviously some really have been screwed over but many whites have been screwed over also in different situations and so have other races.
Yep. Had an upper middle class alcoholic dad who abused us so much I left at sixteen and worked three jobs to get through college and 60-80 hours since. Its all about class and race is part of that, but not the main issue.
While your success is to be congratulated and should be celebrated, there’s certainly a case to be made that from a developmental and an economic perspective, your deficit from conception is less than it would be had you been a person of color. That’s not to take a single thing, feeling or hardship from your struggle, one that you’ve overcome and succeeded in spite of, but we don’t all start the race of life at the same position. That’s the core element of equity versus equality. Acknowledging this and working to understand the difference is the next step in our societal development.
I'm sick of people calling accomplishments, things we earn with blood , sweat and tears, "privilege"...everyone in my family works their ass off to be where they are , nothing has been handed to them or myself .
I don't think anyone who beats that drum is really trying to take anything away from people like that. It's always been about the realization of chances. Most white families have generational wealth/land. It's just a fact. Most white families have higher credit rating giving better options for school. It's just a fact. Most white families aren't born into a lifestyle that corrupts them from the start. Another fact. You can argue all day that we are what we make of ourselves...but if the roles we reversed.. It would still be the same argument and fight. It's not about blame... it's about a portion of our countrymen that have been left behind for years while others were able to thrive. Has nothing to do with the working class... at all.
@Jonathan Lantzy that right there is the mind set that is the problem and the reason why racial animosity is on the rise. Paint a whole color of people as better than others. Do some areas have a harder time than others? Sure. Doesn't mean one should look down on them nor should they paint a whole color of people as having some invisible privilege. By the way, Indians per capita are the richest demographic in the US followed by Asians most of whom came to the US with nothing and within a generation make it to on average middle class.

Only the ones I know. And so what you are describing (generational wealth, higher credit ratings, born into non-corrupted upbringing) isn't the norm among the white families I know. Yes!! Generational wealth does not apply to all white families. My grandmother picked cotton and her family was dirt poor and the other came here as immigrants with only what they could carry in a suitcase.

But honestly, these people will fall victim to the grift. Because low iq people automatically fall for word salad if bigger words are used. There’s no nuance. That’s why right leaning influencers will tell us to shame intellect. To keep us dumbed down. For instance, Ben Shapiro’s biggest “gotcha moment” was “why are black people 13% of the population but commit 50% of the crimes.” Then says it’s culture. But where’s the nuance? If it was culture, then why do more black people want police in the neighborhood than don’t? It’s obviously not black culture to commit crimes. So why is there so much crime? That’s where the nuance is supposed to come in. There’s many reasons. For one, there’s like a million more cops placed in black communities than white communities…so more crimes are gonna be investigated and exposed than in white communities. And you can’t say they were placed there because of crime because more police have been dispatched to the black community back during Jim Crowe when the black community was super Christian and didn’t actually commit crimes. But still more cops were placed there with intentions to arrest black people to keep the community’s population from outgrowing the white, which would cause more black homes to be a necessity, which would push the black community closer to the white community. We literally had a president (I forget which one) who said something along the lines of “since we can’t make being black a crime, we can…dot dot dot” (I forget the rest but look it up) also, redlining was a racist institutionalized policy which kept black people from benefiting off owning a home that would increase in value. And everyone knows back then buying a home was a great investment for the family’s finances. But blacks were forced into ghettos and low value areas that would only decrease in value over time. Also, the constitution once made a black man’s vote 33% of a white persons vote. So it would take 3 black votes to equal 1 white vote. So how could they possibly have voted in politicians that would fight to amend those racist policies and amendments? So those racist policies remained for years causing the black community’s economy to plateau. And it’s the reason why there’s still all blacks ghettos today. Because it’s taking longer to catch up. This causing poverty which caused mental illness which causes crimes. There’s so much nuance but Shapiro chops it up to “culture” it’s word salad.
Also I just reread my comment and it sounds like I’m calling these Cartier family guys low iq. Definitely didn’t mean it like that. But the right uses buzzwords and talking points that will keep your depth of thought at surface level and that’s no good. And social right becoming pop culture shows that millions of people don’t have the depth of thought to realize these conservative influencers are lying without actually saying lies. Just bad faithed statements that brainwash you into thinking irrationally.
@James Doakes I'm not sure I 100% agree with you there, James. The president you're thinking of was Richard Nixon, and it's why he started the drug war--for votes. Everyone's been caught up in it since. Black people didn't have 3/5 of a vote, *slaves* had no vote at all and were considered 3/5 of a person for purposes of the census. With the exception of today's policing, all the policies you're talking about are from the pre-civil rights era, which is what Ben Shapiro is pointing out, why are outcomes worse now than back then? What I would say is Ben Shapiro doesn't get everything right, and he's obviously an ideologue, which does generally suck in a large number of non-thinkers. The whole racism thing is the greatest trick the devil ever pulled IMO. For one it, makes it a lot harder to play a game if you're constantly told the deck is stacked against you. For another, when things get broken down into black and white, people with similar interests and problems are too busy fighting over whether or not it's a black and white thing to link arms and go at the actual problem, diluting the power of both. Black people have been historically oppressed, which is why black people are a target for the system, but black people aren't the only target. While black people are over-represented, the *majority* of people in jail, on welfare, killed by the police, don't graduate high school, etc. are white. In terms of making things better, what sense does it make to divide those groups up by race? 🤔

@@cheeky7036 As a fellow old white dude, if you don't know, then yes you had it (and you still do). Part of, if not most of, white privilege is that you don't know--that's the privilege. I didn't know either. I married a woman of color. Still didn't know. Was with her for many years. I still didn't know. Then one day, we got pulled over by police. I was driving. Cop was white. I was pissed. It was a cheap.. 50 in a 40, but where I was pulled over, sign raising the limit from 40 to 50 was visible, maybe 1/4 mile away. It was the end of the month. Quotas. Technically, I was 10 over. But still, cheap ticket. During the experience, only thought in my mind was, is this guy giving me a warning, or is he actually going to give me this cheap-ass ticket. I got the ticket, I was pissed. I let him know what I thought. When he left, I looked over, and my wife was crying. Completely different experience for her. Took me a long time and many conversations to understand why. For me, police pulling me over = ticket or warning. Those are the only options. For her, there where other options: humiliation, beating, death. Those options had never occurred to me, because they don't apply to me. Not because I wasn't guilty -- I was 10 over. But because I was white. White privilege has nothing to do with how you, as an individual white dude, sees race. Its about how society sees you, versus how it sees people who are not white. Its very easy to get defensive -- I'm not racist. That's great, but not the point, and not enough.

I have worked for 45 yrs never taking a dime from the Gov't. I am not rich but not poor just hard working. My point is you get what you put into life. Bro I appreciate how open minded you guys are but there’s a lot of white people who don’t have generational wealth. Everything I have I did myself. I had nothing my mom had nothing. Yeah my family came as refugees from ww2 with nothing. I still get blamed for slavery lol. Most of my ancestors died in forced labor camps. Im envious of slaves, at least they were considered an investment. Your life at least had value of some sort. What a privlege from my point of view. I was a cop for 20 years and its great to hear you guys speak about this. Especially about self image.. I dealt with that a lot and unfortunately humans judge people on appearance. On all beginnings and endings of the spectrum, we all can be judged by the way we conduct ourselves. There is a standard we should all conduct ourselves, its called morals. I am so happy that you guys are not blinded by the news and false narratives that the government and the classism crowd wants us to believe. As a people when we are united we are an unstoppable force so they have divide us. The quickest way to do that is use race and oppression. This is also why they are trying to ultimately take away our guns. If we keep our minds truly informed our families armed then the government cant take our rights by thoughts or force.
Thanks for having this discussion. My parents were addicts and so was I, I’ve been clean 2 years and am working on a criminal justice degree. I never had a financial head start, everything I’ve accomplished I’ve done on my own, with emotional support from loved ones, sure, but no one handed anything to me. We all have the opportunity to make something of ourselves in the 21st century and the opportunity to build a better and brighter future together. That’s what makes me so sad about all the division and hate I see today

Most refreshing conversation I've heard in a long time. The small minority of black people, who unfortunately have the loudest voice, are those who aren't as well considered as you guys. And that's what causes rifts between society. We need more people like you guys.

Guys- you give me hope for the future. I grew up in a very diverse city in RI that had a very significant % of the population below the poverty line (~40% on food stamps). I’m a huge hip hop head and was a punk kid in my teenage years. Many of my childhood friends are black, Latino, Asian etc. Never once in the 1990s did ANY of us talk about our “race”. We were all homies. One of my best friends, after Trump was elected, called me and told me that I needed to acknowledge my privilege and that the only reason I’m successful is because I’m white. I was so hurt that my boy literally abandoned our 15+ year friendship with so many amazing memories over this. When I attempted to discuss with him he wasn’t having any of it. He still won’t talk to me to this day. It’s truly heartbreaking… KEEP HAVING these conversations! They are so important for the future. We need you- America needs voices like yours. God bless. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for the conversation. Generational wealth was granted to fewer rather more. Many white people immigrated with nothing. I’m a second generation from an immigrant, who came to the US after WW2. We were poor. Had enough for food and shelter but that’s it. When my folks died there was no inheritance. I have worked since my teen years.
My great grandparents moved to the North after WW2 because a black man had been lynched in their neighborhood, but the whole family couldn't come at once because the police in the white part of town would stop them and arrest them on some trumped up charges. They also couldn't walk through the white part of town to get to the train station, or walk along the train tracks because that was considered a crime, so a couple at a time the family had to be driven out so as not to raise suspicion. If your parents didn't have to worry about being stopped by the police for the color of their skin, then they had white privilege. My father also had to lay on the ground while a shotgun pointed at the back of his head by Dearborn, MI police because he was coming home from his after school job at night. It's not about wealth, it's about white people being allowed to experience America without a ton of roadblocks simply due to their race.
@@j.baldwin3012 Sorry for your struggle. My father was in Poland when Germany invaded 1939. A teenager of 17. He was held as a slave laborer along with my uncle from 1939 until liberation in 1945. He shared the terror of wondering if he’d be taken away and never heard of again, as so many of his peers were. Many generations of people have had to suffer at the hands of elites. But there were true heroes who have fought to right the wrongs. So on that note I’ll close and try to find fault with someone.

The truth is that all 5 of them are athletes who’ve been afforded a level a privilege because of their athletic prowess. I grew up dirt poor, my family was dirt poor, and after tracing my ancestry, I learned my entire family, going back for generations were all poor. And, Im still poor now, lol.
And you still have white privilege bc your skin color never was targeted by the system. There were no laws, policies or rules against your skin that were detrimental to your way of life
@@JADTOThe prejudicial issues of the past are not occurring now. Some of my ancestors were Irish slaves, some were native American, and some were victims of the holocaust. But does that effect my life now, no. The current shade of my skin doesn't change my heritage nor does it mean that my ancestors didn't endure horrific prejudicial and traumatic experiences. Does a mixed person suddenly lose their heritage simply because they aren't as light or dark as someone else? No, of course they don't.

Oh no you didn't just say that? I am a baby boomer and was talking with a few old friends from High School recently on FB from my home town. We were talking about how poor we were back in the day living on beans and cornbread and the everyday struggles of not having much. I learned something very interesting that day. One of the guys in our FB chat was a black jock from High School. What he said really opened my eyes. He said "wow I had no idea, I thought just because you were white you had it better than we did because that was what I was taught growing up". We need to do better as a society. I have never seen "white privilege". I have however have seen "rich" privilege. BIG difference. You guys are great tho. I enjoy watching your honesty about life. You can only go by what you have been taught. Keep your minds open and realize that some of what you think has deep seated roots in prejudices from your past generations. Not racism. Prejudice. BIG difference. Never forget that. And for the record very few white people owned slaves. The vast majority of white people did not. Most white people were poor or barely lower middle class with not much money to live on let alone to pass on to the next generation.

There's a privilege that we all have .. depending on the situation. I have personally been denied work due to my skin color. Meanwhile, the reason we have more generational wealth and more money is because we're the largest part of the population, since we live in a European settlement. Also, Asians and Indians have more wealth, home ownership, and education than any other group. That being said, I really enjoyed watching a group of young men having an intelligent conversation. Am glad to hear that you all see yourselves as victors and not victims.

I come from a VERY large, poor white (Irish) family where I literally was related to just about everyone in my town (and it was a town just an hour north of NYC). I definitely always had to work for anything I wanted and my family didn’t have anything but there definitely were, and still are, those who have inherited generational wealth. Jsyk, reliable stats are that 90% of today's millionaires accomplished that with NO family help and no inheritance at all. So much for generational wealth. We did it by being incredibly frugal...no eating out, vacations, no new cars or houses. And ALWAYS save something (invest) each month. Just love ❤️ you guys! I grew up in the poor part of Appalachian. We had nothing , dirt floors and no inside plumbing until 1994 . We were poor white trash . I got out by the grace of God. I am 50, successful career. I graduated college at 35 . Its not skin color, we all struggle. I had to claw my way out of the dirt working , sometimes two jobs. I made it ! I had no privilege, and no help. Thank you for being a hope for the young generation, for keeping an open mind, for educating yourself. Be blessed .

So true. I am white and had two narcissistic parents. I have always been jealous of people with healthy parents no matter their color. I would trade places in a millisecond.
My son and I had the discussion that racism does exist but each generation I believe after us, will be a better place. We all are just in the trenches, learning everyday how to be better.

All I know, as a white kid that grew up poor and a dominant black area, I got beat up a lot for being white. My state has county tags in it, when I was in high school I would drive to the county below me that is one of the riches county's in the US and would get pulled over all the time. I drove a shit, 94 Ford ranger single cab and would get told the line that there were break-ins in the area and my truck matched the description. Bro, I had no tint in a single cab, Ford Ranger. Amd the searched me everytime. To me, it's more economic than color. Plus, the highest average income one color is Asian. It's a significant amount above white people. I myself who went to 90% black schools ( there were more Asians than white people) I couldn't get anything for college, so i took the poor man's scholarship, the military. Went to school and decided it wasn't for me. Tried to get a job and went 9 months and finally got hired. Knew two guys that got tech skills in prison that got a job way faster and made twice as much money as me. I served 6 years and 3 years in iraq and Afghanistan, honorable discharge, and nothing. hustled to get my own business. Tried to get a business loan and couldn't. Did it myself. My biggest thing with people who grew up with me is don't be a product of your environment and don't be a victim.
I agree with almost all of what you said but being black means some people assume your poor. You mentioned being stoped by the police because your car was trash and they felt like they could get away with it. Black people even with a nice car get pulled over and harassed because they feel like they can get away with it.

Try Thomas Sowell, he is not left but rather a well educated and highly intelligent Black Man who is admired by peoples of all races. This man is very matter of fact and does his research.

Loving that y’all consider all the sides. I totally get that many people have generational wealth that AA families may not have. I imagine that generational wealth is not as common as many believe. Sometimes I wonder statistically if they are comparing those in poverty to those in poverty to determine if it’s a racial issue or a poverty culture issue. I say this bc my grandmother grew up as a share croppers daughter with very little. Everything she had she worked hard for to get out of poverty and that work ethic was instilled in us for generations until we learned to acquire wealth. She spent everything she had worked for though and as she aged, the only wealth she had was a family who learned from her and evolved to learn to budget and invest. Generational wealth doesn’t always mean that we were given money, but that we were given a work ethic and the ability to learn to better our situation for the next generation. I really appreciate your input gentleman. Approaching race relations with an accusatory attitude typically results in regression. Recovering from our dark past starts with realizing and appreciating that we all want the same things in life… to support ourselves, our families and pursue overall happiness. Pointing fingers only leads to further division. We are much stronger together.
I’m a white woman who grew up in the ghetto with drug addict parents that didn’t even raise me. I grew up and struggled daily to get ahead or even be on the level of others. It’s not about black or white.. it’s about money. I broke that cycle and now have 4 educated, successful, and most importantly THANKFUL children. They saw my struggle and it drove them harder to be better. If you change the way you look at things.. the things you look at change
My story is very similar.. I can’t imagine how many thousands and thousands and thousands are just like that and are white. I got no money from my parents after they were gone or anything. Blacks always love to say that we have generational wealth.? we are talking about a small percentage of white people that have that and enough money. In the end in my opinion, that so many blacks are the way they are is their own fault. It’s just that simple. Obviously some really have been screwed over but many whites have been screwed over also in different situations and so have other races.

Yep. Had an upper middle class alcoholic dad who abused us so much I left at sixteen and worked three jobs to get through college and 60-80 hours since. Its all about class and race is part of that, but not the main issue.
While your success is to be congratulated and should be celebrated, there’s certainly a case to be made that from a developmental and an economic perspective, your deficit from conception is less than it would be had you been a person of color. That’s not to take a single thing, feeling or hardship from your struggle, one that you’ve overcome and succeeded in spite of, but we don’t all start the race of life at the same position. That’s the core element of equity versus equality. Acknowledging this and working to understand the difference is the next step in our societal development.

I'm sick of people calling accomplishments, things we earn with blood , sweat and tears, "privilege"...everyone in my family works their ass off to be where they are , nothing has been handed to them or myself .
I don't think anyone who beats that drum is really trying to take anything away from people like that. It's always been about the realization of chances. Most white families have generational wealth/land. It's just a fact. Most white families have higher credit rating giving better options for school. It's just a fact. Most white families aren't born into a lifestyle that corrupts them from the start. Another fact. You can argue all day that we are what we make of ourselves...but if the roles we reversed.. It would still be the same argument and fight. It's not about blame... it's about a portion of our countrymen that have been left behind for years while others were able to thrive. Has nothing to do with the working class... at all.

By the way, Indians per capita are the richest demographic in the US followed by Asians most of whom came to the US with nothing and within a generation make it to on average middle class.

What I love about yall is you actually think about stuff. You don't cowtow to one side or the other for clout or views. Thanks for keeping it a buck, fellas.
But honestly, these people will fall victim to the grift. Because low iq people automatically fall for word salad if bigger words are used. There’s no nuance. That’s why right leaning influencers will tell us to shame intellect. To keep us dumbed down. For instance, Ben Shapiro’s biggest “gotcha moment” was “why are black people 13% of the population but commit 50% of the crimes.” Then says it’s culture. But where’s the nuance? If it was culture, then why do more black people want police in the neighborhood than don’t? It’s obviously not black culture to commit crimes. So why is there so much crime? That’s where the nuance is supposed to come in. There’s many reasons. For one, there’s like a million more cops placed in black communities than white communities…so more crimes are gonna be investigated and exposed than in white communities. And you can’t say they were placed there because of crime because more police have been dispatched to the black community back during Jim Crowe when the black community was super Christian and didn’t actually commit crimes. But still more cops were placed there with intentions to arrest black people to keep the community’s population from outgrowing the white, which would cause more black homes to be a necessity, which would push the black community closer to the white community. We literally had a president (I forget which one) who said something along the lines of “since we can’t make being black a crime, we can…dot dot dot” (I forget the rest but look it up) also, redlining was a racist institutionalized policy which kept black people from benefiting off owning a home that would increase in value. And everyone knows back then buying a home was a great investment for the family’s finances. But blacks were forced into ghettos and low value areas that would only decrease in value over time. Also, the constitution once made a black man’s vote 33% of a white persons vote. So it would take 3 black votes to equal 1 white vote. So how could they possibly have voted in politicians that would fight to amend those racist policies and amendments? So those racist policies remained for years causing the black community’s economy to plateau. And it’s the reason why there’s still all blacks ghettos today. Because it’s taking longer to catch up. This causing poverty which caused mental illness which causes crimes. There’s so much nuance but Shapiro chops it up to “culture” it’s word salad.
Also I just reread my comment and it sounds like I’m calling these Cartier family guys low iq. Definitely didn’t mean it like that. But the right uses buzzwords and talking points that will keep your depth of thought at surface level and that’s no good. And social right becoming pop culture shows that millions of people don’t have the depth of thought to realize these conservative influencers are lying without actually saying lies. Just bad faithed statements that brainwash you into thinking irrationally.

Black people didn't have 3/5 of a vote, *slaves* had no vote at all and were considered 3/5 of a person for purposes of the census. With the exception of today's policing, all the policies you're talking about are from the pre-civil rights era, which is what Ben Shapiro is pointing out, why are outcomes worse now than back then? What I would say is Ben Shapiro doesn't get everything right, and he's obviously an ideologue, which does generally suck in a large number of non-thinkers.
The whole racism thing is the greatest trick the devil ever pulled IMO. For one it, makes it a lot harder to play a game if you're constantly told the deck is stacked against you. For another, when things get broken down into black and white, people with similar interests and problems are too busy fighting over whether or not it's a black and white thing to link arms and go at the actual problem, diluting the power of both. Black people have been historically oppressed, which is why black people are a target for the system, but black people aren't the only target. While black people are over-represented, the *majority* of people in jail, on welfare, killed by the police, don't graduate high school, etc. are white. In terms of making things better, what sense does it make to divide those groups up by race? 🤔

I didn't know either. I married a woman of color. Still didn't know. Was with her for many years. I still didn't know. Then one day, we got pulled over by police. I was driving. Cop was white. I was pissed. It was a cheap.. 50 in a 40, but where I was pulled over, sign raising the limit from 40 to 50 was visible, maybe 1/4 mile away. It was the end of the month. Quotas. Technically, I was 10 over. But still, cheap ticket. During the experience, only thought in my mind was, is this guy giving me a warning, or is he actually going to give me this cheap-ass ticket. I got the ticket, I was pissed. I let him know what I thought. When he left, I looked over, and my wife was crying. Completely different experience for her. Took me a long time and many conversations to understand why. For me, police pulling me over = ticket or warning. Those are the only options. For her, there where other options: humiliation, beating, death. Those options had never occurred to me, because they don't apply to me. Not because I wasn't guilty -- I was 10 over. But because I was white. White privilege has nothing to do with how you, as an individual white dude, sees race. Its about how society sees you, versus how it sees people who are not white. Its very easy to get defensive -- I'm not racist. That's great, but not the point, and not enough.

I was a cop for 20 years and its great to hear you guys speak about this. Especially about self image.. I dealt with that a lot and unfortunately humans judge people on appearance. On all beginnings and endings of the spectrum, we all can be judged by the way we conduct ourselves. There is a standard we should all conduct ourselves, its called morals. I am so happy that you guys are not blinded by the news and false narratives that the government and the classism crowd wants us to believe. As a people when we are united we are an unstoppable force so they have divide us. The quickest way to do that is use race and oppression. I never had a financial head start, everything I’ve accomplished I’ve done on my own, with emotional support from loved ones, sure, but no one handed anything to me. Guys- you give me hope for the future. I grew up in a very diverse city in RI that had a very significant % of the population below the poverty line (~40% on food stamps). I’m a huge hip hop head and was a punk kid in my teenage years. Many of my childhood friends are black, Latino, Asian etc. Never once in the 1990s did ANY of us talk about our “race”. We were all homies. One of my best friends, after Trump was elected, called me and told me that I needed to acknowledge my privilege and that the only reason I’m successful is because I’m white. I was so hurt that my boy literally abandoned our 15+ year friendship with so many amazing memories over this. When I attempted to discuss with him he wasn’t having any of it. He still won’t talk to me to this day. It’s truly heartbreaking…

Thank you for the conversation. Generational wealth was granted to fewer rather more. Many white people immigrated with nothing. I’m a second generation from an immigrant, who came to the US after WW2. We were poor. Had enough for food and shelter but that’s it. When my folks died there was no inheritance. I have worked since my teen years.
My great grandparents moved to the North after WW2 because a black man had been lynched in their neighborhood, but the whole family couldn't come at once because the police in the white part of town would stop them and arrest them on some trumped up charges. They also couldn't walk through the white part of town to get to the train station, or walk along the train tracks because that was considered a crime, so a couple at a time the family had to be driven out so as not to raise suspicion. If your parents didn't have to worry about being stopped by the police for the color of their skin, then they had white privilege. My father also had to lay on the ground while a shotgun pointed at the back of his head by Dearborn, MI police because he was coming home from his after school job at night. It's not about wealth, it's about white people being allowed to experience America without a ton of roadblocks simply due to their race.
@@j.baldwin3012 Sorry for your struggle. My father was in Poland when Germany invaded 1939. A teenager of 17. He was held as a slave laborer along with my uncle from 1939 until liberation in 1945. He shared the terror of wondering if he’d be taken away and never heard of again, as so many of his peers were. Many generations of people have had to suffer at the hands of elites. But there were true heroes who have fought to right the wrongs. So on that note I’ll close and try to find fault with someone.

I grew up dirt poor, my family was dirt poor, and after tracing my ancestry, I learned my entire family, going back for generations were all poor. And, Im still poor now, lol.

But does that effect my life now, no. The current shade of my skin doesn't change my heritage nor does it mean that my ancestors didn't endure horrific prejudicial and traumatic experiences. Does a mixed person suddenly lose their heritage simply because they aren't as light or dark as someone else? No, of course they don't.

Oh no you didn't just say that? I am a baby boomer and was talking with a few old friends from High School recently on FB from my home town. We were talking about how poor we were back in the day living on beans and cornbread and the everyday struggles of not having much. I learned something very interesting that day. One of the guys in our FB chat was a black jock from High School. What he said really opened my eyes. He said "wow I had no idea, I thought just because you were white you had it better than we did because that was what I was taught growing up". We need to do better as a society. I have never seen "white privilege". I have however have seen "rich" privilege. BIG difference. You guys are great tho. I enjoy watching your honesty about life. You can only go by what you have been taught. Keep your minds open and realize that some of what you think has deep seated roots in prejudices from your past generations. Not racism. Prejudice. BIG difference. Never forget that. And for the record very few white people owned slaves. The vast majority of white people did not. Most white people were poor or barely lower middle class with not much money to live on let alone to pass on to the next generation.
Y’all seem like some cool ass dudes honestly. Able to have a discussion about a topic without coming at each others heads. It’s guys like you that would enjoy friendship with. Don’t let the establishment and the media divide us brothers. We are Americans and we bleed the same color. Don’t matter our race or creed, more often than not our opportunity it’s based on merit. There's a privilege that we all have .. depending on the situation. I have personally been denied work due to my skin color. Meanwhile, the reason we have more generational wealth and more money is because we're the largest part of the population, since we live in a European settlement. Also, Asians and Indians have more wealth, home ownership, and education than any other group. That being said, I really enjoyed watching a group of young men having an intelligent conversation. Am glad to hear that you all see yourselves as victors and not victims.

I come from a VERY large, poor white (Irish) family where I literally was related to just about everyone in my town (and it was a town just an hour north of NYC). I definitely always had to work for anything I wanted and my family didn’t have anything but there definitely were, and still are, those who have inherited generational wealth. Love the insight and the discussion!
Jsyk, reliable stats are that 90% of today's millionaires accomplished that with NO family help and no inheritance at all. So much for generational wealth. We did it by being incredibly frugal...no eating out, vacations, no new cars or houses. And ALWAYS save something (invest) each month. Just love ❤️ you guys!

I grew up in the poor part of Appalachian. We had nothing , dirt floors and no inside plumbing until 1994 . We were poor white trash . I got out by the grace of God. I am 50, successful career. I graduated college at 35 . Its not skin color, we all struggle. I had to claw my way out of the dirt working , sometimes two jobs. I made it ! I had no privilege, and no help. Thank you for being a hope for the young generation, for keeping an open mind, for educating yourself. Be blessed .

Man I wish I had generational wealth! My parents worked two jobs and our bills still went unpaid sometimes.
My son and I had the discussion that racism does exist but each generation I believe after us, will be a better place. We all are just in the trenches, learning everyday how to be better.

All I know, as a white kid that grew up poor and a dominant black area, I got beat up a lot for being white. My state has county tags in it, when I was in high school I would drive to the county below me that is one of the riches county's in the US and would get pulled over all the time. I drove a shit, 94 Ford ranger single cab and would get told the line that there were break-ins in the area and my truck matched the description. Bro, I had no tint in a single cab, Ford Ranger. Amd the searched me everytime. To me, it's more economic than color. Plus, the highest average income one color is Asian. It's a significant amount above white people. I myself who went to 90% black schools ( there were more Asians than white people) I couldn't get anything for college, so i took the poor man's scholarship, the military. Went to school and decided it wasn't for me. Tried to get a job and went 9 months and finally got hired. Knew two guys that got tech skills in prison that got a job way faster and made twice as much money as me. I served 6 years and 3 years in iraq and Afghanistan, honorable discharge, and nothing. hustled to get my own business. Tried to get a business loan and couldn't. Did it myself. My biggest thing with people who grew up with me is don't be a product of your environment and don't be a victim.
I agree with almost all of what you said but being black means some people assume your poor. You mentioned being stoped by the police because your car was trash and they felt like they could get away with it. Black people even with a nice car get pulled over and harassed because they feel like they can get away with it.

I totally get that many people have generational wealth that AA families may not have. I imagine that generational wealth is not as common as many believe.
Sometimes I wonder statistically if they are comparing those in poverty to those in poverty to determine if it’s a racial issue or a poverty culture issue.
I say this bc my grandmother grew up as a share croppers daughter with very little. Everything she had she worked hard for to get out of poverty and that work ethic was instilled in us for generations until we learned to acquire wealth. She spent everything she had worked for though and as she aged, the only wealth she had was a family who learned from her and evolved to learn to budget and invest.
Generational wealth doesn’t always mean that we were given money, but that we were given a work ethic and the ability to learn to better our situation for the next generation. We learn from the mistakes and good that came before us.

I really appreciate your input gentleman. Approaching race relations with an accusatory attitude typically results in regression. Recovering from our dark past starts with realizing and appreciating that we all want the same things in life… to support ourselves, our families and pursue overall happiness. Pointing fingers only leads to further division. We are much stronger together.
