In 1936, a family of Russian Old Believers journeyed deep into Siberia's vast taiga to escape persecution and protect their way of life. The Lykovs eventually settled in the Sayan Mountains, 160 miles from any other sign of civilization. In 1944, Agafia Lykov was born into this wilderness. Today, she is the last surviving Lykov, remaining steadfast in her seclusion. In this episode of Far Out, the VICE crew travels to Agafia to learn about her taiga lifestyle and the encroaching influence of the outside world.

THIS! THIS! This! This is what we want. Something raw and unique! A place where most of us will never ever set foot in. Not only the landscape but also the lives of the people. From the chaos of the mid East to the silence of the great Siberian lands is what makes Vice so unique. We want to be taken on a trip to places we cant and might never go to! This is why I subscribed to Vice. Stay on your game Vice, and I promise you will be around for a very long time.
I love the taiga, I took the transiberian train from Beijing to Moscow in January of 2008. Seeing the forests covered in snow was amazing, out of the 11-12 day train ride, 5 of them as I recall was nothing but dense ancient taiga, no towns. Occasionally you'd see a forest graveyard covered in shadow from the canopy. I would drink vodka at night under the moonlight listening to the Warcraft soundtrack for Dun Morogh, thinking about dwarves. As I recall, this family was near the Mongolian border
This is going to be awesome! I have read about their story and how they were discovered. Awesome stuff!
I recently learned about this family now I'm excited to hear more about them from her.
I read a article about her and her family, it was very impressive.
it would be a true honor to meet these people and spend a few days doing what they do out there
I've read about this family before and although some aspects of them are unsavory, It's really cool that they could survive out there for that long.
Yes, this is the kind of excellent content Vice could do more of, and do really well.
This is why I keep coming back for more VICE content
Looking forward to this. Now THAT'S the vice I subbed to.

Man, I wonder if she's depressed or not. If she's happy like that then I wonder how she does it. I can't wait until the full video comes out. Good job VICE, keep em coming!
WOw, she has a real semblance of a house now with windows. This is an old story, it will be awesome to see how she's doing today after all these years. You can find a few documentaries on this family on youtube now.

Man can't wait till Monday. It looks very interesting usually it's hard to find documentaries on old believers. They don't like outsiders looking into their lives.

Hey, is there any playlist for all the far-out documentaries?
If she's been on her own for 25 years how did anyone, including you guys as Vice find her?! Hopefully my question; along with many others are answered! I can't wait for this one.
This is beautiful.
Ahhhhhh yeah. Now that's the good Vice content.
Probably some of the happiest people on Earth.
finally vice! something interesting!
far away from all evil, corruption, and hate... good for this women. looking forward to this documentary!
She - and her family - were discovered in 1978 by a team of geologists. A book was written about them by Vasily Peskov. " Lost in the Taiga: One Russian Family's Fifty-Year Struggle for Survival and Religious Freedom in the Siberian Wilderness " Published in English in 1994. Now only available paperback in French: "Ermites dans la Taiga".
Can't wait!
I ignore rude and crude comments about Agafia. She has more morals then some of you commenters. Why don't you all live in the Siberian mountains alone. You wouldn't last 2 days and you would be running home crying for mommy with your tails between your legs. Agafia is an amazing person. Bless her heart.
Yeah powerful Joe and powerful Shane!! This sounds like an amazing story
I'm from Siberia. (Novosibirsk) lived there for 11 years
You should be in the next vice documentary!!
THIS IS WHY WE WATCH VICE!
Cant wait to see this, but its really sad she lives alone in the middle of no where.
yes, cant wait
More Survival/Wilderness!
Looks awesome driving past the in august
I really want to watch this
can't wait!
This one looks good!!
is part 3 being released today?
My grandfather was deported there during the Soviet occupation. From what he used to tell us, it was like hell on earth out there. Dropped out in the middle of nowhere without almost anything at all and -30 - 50 C outside. He managed to return after the collapse of the soviet union, but was never the same.
I heard about this on the JRE Podcast with Shane Smith, very interesting!
This looks really interesting
Looks really good.
Amen to this brother
Thumbs up for this guy! True!
i wouldn't say "disturbed", i'm sure she agreed to make this documentary. not to mention, the fact that vice went out there, means that now you can hear her story too, so all is well.
Reminds me o the Alaskan Documentary which is a really good thing!!!
the next webisode will be "surviving on the Moon for 120 years". vice always taking it to the next level
