  • By the time Alice in Chains played MTV Unplugged, the band was falling apart at the seams. No longer touring or working on new material. Internally the band was a mess and it was shocking they were still going at all. The biggest hurdle Alice in Chains were facing at the time was frontman Layne Staley's addiction. With his condition continuing to deteriorate, it was incredibly hard for the band to properly function. The fact that 1995's self-titled even saw the light of day was a miracle.
Relations within the band were strained, yet Alice in Chains somehow delivered a mind-blowing performance. MTV Unplugged was perhaps the band's defining moment, showing off their ability to tone things down while still retaining power. Every member was able to shine here. Layne and Jerry Cantrell killed it on vocals, with their harmonies being total ear candy. While Mike Inez boasted an ethereal tone on bass and Sean Kinney managed to subdue his typically forceful drumming with incredible results.
Many bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam played MTV Unplugged prior to Alice in Chains. But their performance is definitely on the same level, if not a bit better. So let's get into the band's unforgettable MTV Unplugged show. A show that should've been disastrous. But ultimately ended up defying all expectations, becoming an iconic moment in Alice in Chains' career.

I remember the first time I heard this album. I always liked Alice In Chains, but they were never one of my favorite bands until I heard this album. It blew me away. I loved it so much that I searched and found the VHS version of the performance. Seeing the entire performance as it actually happened was quite upsetting. When you see the condition Layne was in on the night of that performance, it was hard to watch, but it made it clear how talented he was. He was not in good shape, and he was so high that he could barely function, but yet he still managed to put on this amazing performance. Growing up in the 90s, nearly every singer I grew up listening to is no longer with us. They have all affected me, but none affected me as much as Layne. When I heard of his death, it didn't surprise me, but it still upset me, especially after I heard what happened to him. My best friend and I just went down to the local park, got high, and listened to Alice in Chains. It wasn't the best tribute, but we didn't know what else to do. No matter what mistakes he made in life, no one should go out like that. If I had known that was happening, I would have kicked the door in and pulled him out myself. I just feel so sorry for his mother, having to find him like that. I almost did the same thing to my mother, and I know what she went through. It was enough to make me never touch drugs again. He had legendary talent, and I just wish someone had helped him. He just wasted away. He left such a body of work to remember him by, but most of it was a cry for help that no one heard. He deserved better. RIP Layne

Amazing show. Nutshell and Down in a Hole torn my heart, broke me into pieces. Layne won't be forgotten. Such a beautiful soul. I wish I couldn't have seen him live.

My fav moment is of course, Nutshell, when Layne shows up on stage and the audience ROARS. Gave me the chills. Great video but so sad as well...RIP angry angel, we miss you greatly 😭

Yea, that was pretty sweet, wasn't it? I bet the crowd was on edge whenever they cheered after Scott Olson, a 2nd guitarist who had never really been in AiC before, walked out before Layne.

I got to see Alice in Chains live in 2008. It wish that Layne could have been there but DuVall does him justice. He put on a fantastic performance.

So glad you covered this! I wish there was a way to hear moments of the music.
You nailed it with Down In A Hole as the highlight. 🪰🪽
It was a great set - and it’s nice to hear someone give Cantrell the credit he deserves
Those harmonies aren’t the same 1/3s we hear ad nauseam… and his vocals are the warm, deep heart to Layne’s controlled-but-frenetic expression.
    The cream in the coffee.😂
Loved this. Going to watch it again!

I may disagree with how fine the production of the self titled album was. It was basically like pulling teeth. And Nothing Song MAY seem like a silly song but it showed how compromised Layne was during this time. There is a quote that went, "If Dirt was the disaster, then the self titled is the depressing aftermath."
