I previously tried to use SketchUp to design a built-in set of wardrobes, but it was taking me so long I switched to pencil and paper.
This time around I'm building a set of wall mounts for my speakers, a bit of a simpler project, but wanted to play with bevels and angled fronts. I watched part 1 and was up and running right away because it was exactly what I needed to start drawing with sheet materials. 👏

This was a great follow-on tutorial to your intro video a little while ago. I managed to follow along very well by having your youtube video in a small window and SketchUp in another more or less side by side (though the youtube window was only in the top half of the screen) and this made it really easy to put you on pause and also some rewinding whilst I copied your actions in my SketchUp. Wow 2 short lessons and I'm already feeling like a SketchUp pro, at least for my limited requirements. Hey, don't let my 'pro' delusions stop you giving some more lessons :-) . I will be now be using SketchUp as a really valuable tool for almost all of house fitting ventures. I'm now busy using SketchUp to properly plan my next small project. A coffee on its way to you!

Great informative video. I've been a follower of yours on IG a while (matts.garage) and have only just started on these series. I've used SketchUp in the past to design a picnic table, a Festool Vac Sys cart w/ Sys-AZ storage, some Sys ports but I've never needed to do an actual room with fitted cabinets until now. I couldn't wrap my head around how to lay out the room then put cabinets into it and you've explained it so clearly. Thank you.

Absolutely fantastic tutorial, this is exactly what i been searching for trawling through loads of American videos that never quite fully explained what it was i was trying to achieve or i was having to watch multiple videos to get what you have explained in this single video.
I have been reverting back to to paper sketches with clients as i was always getting stuck at a certain point with SketchUp & didn't want to show clients an half finished project, but i am now getting so many requests for fitted bedrooms & bespoke cabinets i have got to get to grips with SketchUp, also the yearly subscription is a waste of money if its not getting used for the purpose it was purchased.

Really interested in the scaling and copying of cabinets and how you might copy a cabinet into another drawing and change the dimensions? I never managed to get it off the ground - sharing the models and methods, or finding the time to properly teach it. I built those dynamic components using the cabinetsense extension for SketchUp and Paul the extension designer was interested in working together to share them more widely. But he discovered I had doctored the original components too much for his liking and we couldn’t resolve his reservations about sharing them.
Annoyingly you make it look so easy to navigate around sketch up the way you do. Would’ve taken me hours to get anywhere close to this lol

I have recently retired and my woodworking "to do" list seems to be getting longer and longer with plans for bedroom furniture and Workshop Units. Will you at some stage cover cutting lists? (without expensive add ins). Coffee on it's way and thank you again.

MASSIVELY useful video. Having tried a couple of times to learn sketchup and given up this has really helped, along with your earlier video, to explain things in practical terms for a woodworker from the ground up. Will be heading over to buy you a coffee and download the components when I have my pc booted up (BMAC website doesn’t really seem to like iPads.....). Thankyou!

Freebird Interiors Hi Alistair, just bought you a coffee and via the iPad. Whatever the glitch, it seems the guys at BMAC have fixed it. From what I remember, the system hung at the point of payment after selecting PayPal as the method. No issues today though (and possibly could have been a PayPal issue, not unknown).
darren green thanks for that. Generally if there are issues they seem to be PayPal related; they recommend using Stripe. Did you receive the pdf download ok (hafele Loox lighting crib sheet)?

Hi Chris Thanks. I will get onto that. I am building it as a series that should move viewers through basic SketchUp modelling; presenting drawings for customers, and eventually creating cutting lists etc. I did however show some cutting lists and how they are transferred to the workshop in the recent video titled ‘homebased workshop part 2: making it work with a team.’ This gives some insights into the process that you will find interesting I think.

Enjoyed this. Will be buying a coffee for sure! You must be a thirsty chap! 😁. I know this was for presentation only to the customer but would you go back to the drawing in more detail for how it was actually going to be built? If I had drawn that the base units would show me exactly the size of each piece and I would make them all a component but it takes me ages like a day at least! Am I on the right track?
Hi Nic yes absolutely that is the way we do it now, and I’m going to move towards showing that as this series progresses. If you look at the wardrobes shown near the beginning of the first video in the series, they are all drawn as separate components for each board part and the CabinetSense plugin sends the part names and sizes direct to the Cutlist software for sheet optimisation.

I discovered SketchUp around 6 weeks ago. Cracking software. Intuitive and effective. This video is exactly what I needed for my own renovation needs. Great stuff.
Also, I wonder if there's any option to take into account uneven or sloping walls. I suppose that would help immensely in the design and fitting process, but it's perhaps beyond the remit of the software.
How did you set up for Keyboard Strokes?
You should find it under file - settings, sorry I am not at the laptop while reading this to explain better
Hy! I hope I don't bother you too much... I have another question: how do you change the size of a component?
Ryno Vlad hi, you can use the scale tool. Select component then Keystroke S. Click on the relevant grab handle then start moving it. Type ‘x2’ and hit enter to make it twice as big in that dimension. Type ‘1100mm’ and hit enter to make it that exact size. Note: if you scale a component from the top level (without ‘opening’ it) you are distorting that version of the original. If you double click to open the component then scale it you are changing the original component and other linked components in the model will change accordingly.
Anyone watching this in 2021, Layers are now called "tags" for reference :)
