- The Oscar Peterson Trio performing the piece You Look Good to Me at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I suppose the Oscar Peterson Trio doesn't require further explanation.
This is a very rare recording. It was broadcasted on Dutch television about a year ago. As far as I know, this video has not been uploaded yet.
I once heard there are many fine video recordings like this in the archives of this Dutch building. It's such a shame that no one can reach these treasures.. - Hudba
I don't know how many times I have watched and listened to this video, and every time I do I cry like a baby. There are very few people about whom you can say that they are the best in the world at what they do, but it is true about Oscar and Ray. I miss them every day. The whole world is a little bit duller without them.
Jay Francis For your delectation.
Exactly the same for me...but I do prefer definitly the october 1964 version, which is more quiet and tender.
rouviere62: Agree. Here is a very good rendition, 98 of 100 points, while on the "We Get Requests" album, it is better focussed and more powerful (105 of 100 points...).
Me too. Awesome. My favourite actually
"Request" by Lawrence Raab
.
For a long time I was sure
it should be "Jumping Jack Flash," then
the adagio from Schubert's C major Quintet,
but right now I want Oscar Peterson's
"You Look Good to Me." That's my request.
Play it at the end of the service,
after my friends have spoken.
I don't believe I'll be listening in,
but sitting here I'm imaging
you could be feeling what I'd like to feel--
defiance from the Stones, grief
and resignation with Schubert, but now
Peterson and Ray Brown are making
the moment sound like some kind
of release. Sad enough
at first, but doesn't it slide into
tapping your feet, then clapping
your hands, maybe standing up
in that shadowy hall in Paris
in the late sixties when this was recorded,
getting up and dancing
as I would not have done,
and being dead, cannot, but might
wish for you, who would then
understand what a poem--or perhaps only
the making of a poem, just that moment
when it starts, when so much
is still possible--
has allowed me to feel.
Happy to be there. Carried away.
I can’t even imagine the trill of hearing him play in person. God has a new musician in Heaven!
Not many jazz pianists are able to turn such a song in something very spectacular, without overdoing it...He's one big jazz legend!
Im 78 i listened to opand his trios since i was about 15 yrs he changed my musical life.stii brings me to tears never be anyone like this man cheers from australia
I cry every time I hear this tune. Such beauty and finesse OP and his band has. What I would give to have lived during his time..
Umm kill myself and be reborned
I feel so fortunate to having met you in 2004 mr. Peterson - I hope you are having a blast in your new life where ever you are & thank you for all the inspiring music you left behind for all of us to enjoy!
Love from Per
Hey everybody, thanks for all your nice comments. If I get my hands on other rare videos like this, I'll upload them.
Kind Regards,
Boas
One of my favorite Oscar Peterson tracks... the studio version is a brilliant recording. Thanks for posting!
I greatly admire Oscar Peterson's musical repertoire being part of my musical life so that I can too can listen to his work...
MIGHT AS WELL BE (the new) BACH!
Take that throne, Mr. Peterson, in our new times.
Bravo to you and your skillful expression of human artful soul.
TallSomeone I really love Peterson and his music but Bach was and probably will ever be the greatest influencer in music to ever have existed, he shaped the music to the way we hear it now.
The best. No one above
Always a great pleasure to listen again and again
Wonderful music played by a wonderful trio - Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen - never heard better on this planet !!
I have heard this music for the first time more than 40 years ago. I has never left my memory since then. Many thanks Boas!
I have that lp...Im only 55 but have been listening tothis from about 8 years old..Love it.Nothing better
This is just incredible. To put it mildly.
Oscar, Ray and Ed, best trio ever for me.
I share this belief 💯
Finally, I found it! "You look good to me" is the first jazz tune I heard when I was 8 or so, now 50 years ago. This was the early 1960s, and it completely mesmerized me. This amazing live recording is very close to what I heard on the old vinyl LP. It needs to be played at this tempo, not too fast. The tune stayed with me ever since. It opened the door to the most fertile form of human creative expression that I can think of, the jell between physical movement of dance and verbal movement of spoken narrative, the art of travelling sound.
wow, what a great way to start! I heard this tune for the first time a few months ago, while studying for a jazz class. I must admit..it made me shed a tear! It was something about the piano solo... quite amazing!
João Correia Me too!
did you hear it as the end tune of Dutch TV (NTS untill 1969 that is)...?
Helemaal top, Jan!
what a beautiful sentiment.
me too! I'm totally jazzed to see this clip, I've played the album track over and over, it's slightly different, these guys were so unpretentious, so cool but so warm. I would happily give up 30 years to have been around at the time these guys were swinging, which would make me very old today, but what memories I would have. Thank you!
peterson...brown...thigpen....one of the best trios ever....sounds great to me....tx for the post...
This is amazing. How can you not be so happy listening to this? Wow. This trio is a serious gift to my ears.

An absolute genius! Isn’t this wonderful!
Oscar reminds me of Jacques Loussier on this Bach-ian number. Lovely.
That repeated lick at 3:44 is so simple and so pleasant to listen to. Oscar seems particularly pleased, from the look on his face. Just sublime
Bravissimo ti emoziona

I never heard this tune before or this performance. This is treasure.
We get requests, a must have album, if you liked this one
that MUST be ed thigpen on drums. i'm not so good with faces but the brushes are sublime, and thigpen was a god with the brushes. it's a great feeling being able to hear the identity of a musician, in as little as brush strokes.
2:02 what a groove!

Was lucky enough to hear Oscar Peterson live in 1984, with NHOP on bass and Martin Drew on drums. I don't think they played this gorgeous tune, wish they had, but it was a fine concert anyway.
Dit was vroeger de eindtune van de NOS. Heb hier speciaal de lp van Oscar Peterson aangeschaft. Eindigt met een heel opvallend zachte PING
I miss it too
super, danke
that's a very great man !!

Boas
Top kerel, bedankt!
