It sure is nice to know that I have a tool at my disposal that is ready to go at a moment’s notice. It’s called peace of mind. Sure, there’s always a better or bigger tool, but having something is better than nothing…. It’s easy to overthink and second guess decisions, but I’m happy I have mine and consider myself lucky that I was able to put together a well equipped tractor package and being able to afford it.

Good stuff! I’ve been having this conversation with myself for a while now. I’m fixing to order a new 2038R and plan on getting the loader and backhoe. One of the points I have heard Tim the tractor man maker is when you have one you will use it on stuff you wouldn’t normally rent an excavator for. Like planting shrubs in the garden. I think the convenience in itself to use it whenever you want and need justifies the purchase in a way.

A tractor without a backhoe gives me the same feeling as seeing a tractor without a loader.

Another factor is, how far away is the rental. My property is an hour and a half each way to a rental shop. Add in the fuel to get there and back ( a full tank in my truck towing that much weight), the cost of a trailer rental, and you can see why I'm thinking of getting a backhoe with my new tractor next year. Get it, have it, and use it as I need/want it!

I have a small tractor with a back hoe. It came with the tractor. I didn't think I would use it that much. After I bought it, I realized that I can use it to plant trees. While I was on CZcams, I found that I could split rocks with a drill and feathers and wedges. I have lots of boulders sticking up from the ground . I would dig around them , split the top off and rebury them. With the thumb, I use it to cut fire wood. I pick up the log and cut it to length. This way I don't dig my saw in the dirt. I put a chain on it and used it as a small crane rebuilding a stone wall. I also use it as a counter weight when I us the front end loader. I can do this when I have time. Not when the rental company delivers it. And I don't have to hurry to get it done in a day. If I bought another tractor, I would definately buy one with a back hoe.

    Hi Brock. Good video chat.
Tim from TTWT recently got a mini-ex to dig out his pond. He had the same challenges using his backhoe that you mentioned. He had 4 friends driving tractors to move the spoils away.
Your backhoe also contributes to your income when you create videos, so it is an asset with multiple benefits.

I have a 1025r with a front endloder and a backhoe. Not my first choice. But when your wife says that tractor you want will be here tomorrow you don't say nothing. I wanted a bigger framed tractor but I love this one. No I want dig a pond with it but I don't want a pond. It has dug up tree stumps and will be digging some this weekend may take longer but I don't have nothing to do anyway. But each piece of equipment has its place.

Costed me around $6,500 to add a backhoe to my JD 1025r several years ago. I like the availability of having it when I need it. It’s also great ballast for loader work so it’s also used even when it’s not digging. I’m pleased I got my moneys worth using the backhoe for both digging and rear ballast for loader work.
Thing with renting a mini ex gotta plan ahead to make sure someone else didn’t rent it already an if so then time wasted looking for another to rent. Then going out to get it. With my backhoe it’s ready to go when I need it and can get it digging quicker than running to the rental shop. Then few of the rental shops in my area haven’t even seen a mini ex to rent anyway.
Great with the quickness of getting digging with my backhoe recently was when I had trouble with a septic pipe at my house. Had the pipe dug up found the problem and replaced a broken part of the pipe in no time at all. Another time it helped fix a busted water hydrant at dads where it was leaking real bad, would have leaked a lot more water making a muddy mess worse. Few times needed something dug fast the backhoe was great and couldn’t waste time going to a rental shop.

The infamous backhoe debate. My tractor was a need, specifically for snow removal due to the almost 3000.00 per year to have the local guy do it… I got the backhoe because I am on a very hilly property, and using the loader in some cases will not work… At this point, I don’t think I would buy a tractor without a backhoe.

Great video, Brock. I almost ordered my 2038R without the backhoe. I am glad I decided to get it. It is expensive but convenient. I have used it numerous times around my property. It is nice to take my time on my project without worrying about returning rental equipment the next day. In regards to the tractor purchase, I would not get the 2038R today. I also ordered too many unnecessary attachments with it. If I have to change tractors one day, I would get a tractor with a factory cabin. Maybe a 3039R.

Good morning Brock. As you know I bought a used 2007John Deere 2305 (400 hrs.) about 4 years ago and I live in the mountains of North Central Pennsylvania. I'm 73 years old and the backhoe on my tractor is indispensable to me. And any given morning I can go out to the garage, fire up the tractor and dig a ditch, take down a tree, and dig up the stump. There may be better machines for the job but it's affordable and it will definitely get the job done. So, long story short I can't imagine having a compact or sub compact tractor without one. It's definitely worth it to this old man. God bless and have a wonderful day. P.S. If you don't have it, ya can't use it. 👍👍🙂

  • @circuitbreaker9001

I purchased my Kubota with the backhoe. I would never be without it. It removes rocks, stumps and digs for big 0. When the backhoe is off the tractor runs a chipper. A front mount snow blower and I do several drives each winter. So in my mind I get more mileage out of my tractor . I only paid a contractor once to install a electrical line trench. That cost was $ 225.00. Just adding my thoughts. Good video. Also I had a Chinese tractor for 16 years. It had a backhoe , loader, chipper and blower. Sold it to buy the Kubota because I got tried of snow going down my shirt and in my face. I needed a cab tractor. It is so much easier to use than the Chinese tractor. In reference to installing the equipment. Eg. Backhoe 5 min. instead a 30 to 45 min .

"Because I want it." Brock, that is all that needs to be said. Like you point out, if you can afford it without your family going without because of it, then just get it. Life is short and you can't take any dough with you on the way out.
Owning equipment make doing a job on the homestead way more convenient because you can get away without so much advance planning. Getting and returning rented equipment is a pain in the butt, so if you have many jobs to do, it can certainly make sense to buy the equipment. For myself, I didn't see a huge amount of digging in my future - so I didn't buy a backhoe attachment with my Kioti DK5310SE. In my case, renting a mini-ex will make more sense for the few times I'll need to dig a trench or some such.
    Take care and God Bless.

You also have to consider if you rent a mini excavator do you have a truck and trailer capable of towing the excavator from the rental place to your site or do you have to pay for delivery. Also owning the backhoe allows you to do the job on your time. If you rent you will feel rushed to get it done before closing because you have to return the excavator instead of finishing another day. What if it rains and you have to pay for additional rental days.

I bought a mini excavator (1 ton) new for less than the cost of a backhoe for my 1025R. It was surprisingly capable for its size and having a full 360 degrees of swing is really valuable. So with my own Backhoe - I can use it as my time allows. I have 1 upcoming project where I may rent a Mini-Ex because it requires something outside the reach of my 1025r setup.

Agree with everything you said. I have 1 JD 1025 R/ backhoe/FEL/Woodchipper. Three main creeks on my property. They all flood even after dredging, but the digging keeps the flooding to a minimum. I would love to dredge with an excavator, but they are too expensive and are limited to digging and little else. They are also way too heavy for the bridges I have built, whereas the 2300 pound tractor navigates them easily. So I dredge where I can, angling the machine as best I can, and somehow things get done (almost). Tractors are much more mobile, and if you own one you can use it at a moment's notice, without the hassle of calling for a rental. Rentals are like ectoplasm--here and then gone without a trace. Rental are depressing. It's money you don't want to spend and might not even have. Ownership is peace of mind, always there when you need it. And last but not least: ownership is fun and a source of pride. Keep on farming!

The excavator is way more user friendly and can do more faster than the tractor backhoe . So in my opinion it’s all about what you are after and what you want . But at one point I had 2 full-size industrial tractor backhoes . O me the excavator surpasses them all .

And almost never have the proper sub frame for my tractor. Also I'd have to source all the power beyond components etc. So I was thinking of getting a 1025r or 2025r with backhoe since they're on sale and zero % right now. I was also considering a used mini excavator or a new Ground Hog/Kymron mini excavator. The 755 will NOT be sold, I will keep it forever. Not sure what I will do yet.

I want to get a backhoe for my 3046R. I know sometimes I'd still need a mini-ex for projects, but the ability to have it when I want it would be great. A tractor backhoe can dig stumps and trenches about as efficiently as a mini-ex. For big excavations, or working next to buildings, mini-ex wins. In that case, I can rent one and get a buddy to run the tractor then we can move the spoils away quickly. I rented a Deere 35G with a cab (Yanmar re-brand) and it was an awesome machine, but it cost me $1300 for the week. It can handle twice what a backhoe on my tractor could do.

But when I look at the prices of excavator, and it moving speed, even if I trust his judgment, I still feel the T25 + backhoe to be my best option. I agree in the video about the limitation of the tractor backhoe and the 180 degree rotation, which would make some job problematic, but for everything else, the lower price, faster movement, carrying capacity... And I also agree on the fun time ! Part of it is also to do something else that my day jobs... If it take a few days longer, it not a big deal for me at this time... And even if I feel I need something bigger in 3 year, I do feel that I could get a pretty good price for it. So we will see.

You really need to be honest with yourself how much would I use it. I wanted one badly but haven't used it that much who knows if we get it fixed might use it more

Want VS Need. Logic that's rarely applied when boys acquire their toys. Hey, I have a JD 4066R Deluxe Cab TLB and it's just a want. But I do give it a workout from time to time.

i bit like you i bought a 34 hp kubota with backhoe new 15 years ago on my 360 acres i quckly realized that i need a bigger tractor and the backhoe as you said was too smalll for many jobs i traded it 10 years ago for kubota 8540 used and bobcat 334 used for $40000 extra best deal the tractor did better work more power is nice plus on my hills in WV the bigger wheels feel safer the excavator does all the work needed i just traded the kubota at 2300 hours for kioti 7320 but i am keeping my bobcat used but very serviceable ( i cannot afford a new one anyway!!! 0

I have a 3033r with a 385a backhoe. I’m happy with the backhoe. I just wish I’d purchased the backhoe when I first purchased the tractor. Others have mentioned being able to roll the cost in with your financing for the tractor purchase, but another important point is the length of the warranty. When you buy the backhoe separate it only has a 1 year warranty. If you buy it with the tractor it has the same multi-year warranty as the tractor.

I'd love to have a mini-ex, but the tiny ones don't have the oomph to begin with. I went with the HF trencher to pair with the Kubota BX - it's super simple, only does minimal trenching/digging, but for the cost? I'll take it - can work two people - have my kid running the BX to haul the spoils away while I'm digging....it's a happy medium - and waaay cheaper.

Mini x is super handy, I'm done with projects around the house but I charge $90/hr when I start loading and time stops when it rolls off the trailer at home. Production pay jobs have been up to $320/hr. Tb216

Howdy Brock! Those are some really good points. For budget reasons I'd really have to work out what I 'need' vs what I 'want'... lol. Like right now I'm looking at tearing out all the overgrown landscaping on three sides of our house. Do I pay someone to do it? Rent a small excavator and do it myself over a weekend? My neighbor up the road maybe 1/2 mile has a nice commercial backhoe tractor. The smart thing is to just pay him to come do it. But the kid in me wants to play around with an excavator... lol. Another problem is I don't have a flat bed trailer to go get the rental. The closest rental place is about 25-30 miles away. What would they charge to deliver? Decisions decisions... Thanks for sharing 🤠

I rented a Kubota SVL-97 with a Forestry mulching head from the rental yard last month. I have a half ton truck rated at 10,500 lbs for towing capacity. I was told machine and trailer to pull it was 14,500. Delivery was $4 per loaded mile at 28 miles from rental yard it cost me $224 total delivery. $112 delivered and $112 to be picked up. If my truck was capable of pulling the equipment, I would estimate gas costing me around $40 at $3 a gal

I have the smaller 2017 2032R I bought it with a 270b backhoe and the only regret I have is not having a cab especially with our winters in the Northeast. I have 1402 hrs on it. Been pretty much trouble-free. I would be lost without the backhoe. .

I’m in similar predicament: not sure if I keep on renting 35g and 50g’s, buy a BH92($15k for mx5400), or buy a deere50G??? Renting makes the most sense, financially. ???????

My co worker had a tlb and told me I should get one, I told him if I lived somewhere with a shallow frost line I would, but here we have a 8 foot frost line so I'd rather rent a machine that can dig 8 plus feet... but that's me and my senerio.

If I amoritze the number of hours on my 26G against what I paid for it, I'm waaaay in the red. That being said, if I rent one, I'd either have to buy a truck and trailer that's capable of hauling it or pay a delivery fee. And (as I think someone else mentioned) there's the issue of availability. I definitely like being able to go out there and use it whenever I want/need to. Also as mentioned, unless I totally trash the 26G, considering the current trend in new prices, it's going to be worth what I paid for it for a long time. My only regret about buying it is that I couldn't get a 35G for 6 months, so I had to settle for the 26G. And I got lucky on it because some guy ordered one and they booked two into the system, I walked in at the right time and it still took 6 weeks to get it delivered.

But does it have to be a deere? The chineese excavators are alot cheaper, even if you opt for one with a kubota 3 cylinder diesel.

I'd rather use the $10,000 I save by not buying the backhoe and put another $5k or $8k and buy a reasonable used mini-excavator and DON'T buy a John Deere model and avoid the $20k "Green" tax.

$9,000.00 CAN BUY YOU A USED FULL SIZE BACKHOE LOADER. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD ALL AROUND MULTI TOOL. IF YOU THROW ON A SKIDSTEER QUICK CONNECT. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.
