The story about your brother, Paul, getting startled in the house reminded me of something from my childhood that I'd like to share. We were home alone one night without my dad there. A bat got into our house and my mother was terrified of them; it was the old "they give you rabies" thing. She rushed us all out of the house and was fretting about what to do. There was an old man, old to me, who rode a bicycle all over the area. He happened to be riding by and my mother called to him to ask if he would help with the bat. He got to it with gusto. He got a bathroom towel and started following it around. He finally yelled, "I got it!' and we peered through the window as he struggled with it. He proudly came out on the porch to show us that he had bravely got the bat. He opened the towel slowly to reveal he had caught and struggled with my little brother's brown shoe!! We couldn't help but laugh and he rode off leaving us with a continuing bat problem. 🤣

My mother taught her children to never, never, ever take for granted the gifts God gave us in nature. On of her children ( six months old) starved in a concentration camp. She kept her oldest alive by hunting for worms and rodents. The younger one was too young to process it. So if you have wild grapes, fruit or veggies or like deer, rabbits, you use it and store it. Rough times are coming again. God does His part, now we have to do ours. 🙏😘

      Wow!
My grandmother and her sisters were in concentration camps as girls. They pulled potatoe peels from the pigs food, and even tried eating raw eggs.
      They would not waste ANYTHING.
My grandmother always had a garden, and she would pick every eadable wild plant she knew about.

Years ago my mother said their newlywed budget depended on my Daddy harvesting squirrels and deer . They had a freezer locker in town as they did not have an electric refrigerator until weeks before I was born. They had meat chickens they would kill and drive to town to the food locker. Mom said when she took delivery of their new GE electric freezer she thought she had died and gone to heaven. Now it is hard to imagine ice men delivering ice to your house .

You can chop the garlic and add a little olive oil to help it sort of stick together. Scoop it into little balls on a cookie sheet to freeze them then store them in a ziploc in your freezer. Each little scoop ( or two) is just right to add to sauces or recipes. I like pan fried turnips and potatoes!

One good thing about these channels...it encourages others to do the same. There are thousands of Amish and Mennonite families in the U.S. who have canned their own food for decades. My mom never used a pressure canner. It was always water bath. It's always good to hear from others out there trying to carry on the old ways that are still important.

I love to listen to you & Matt tell stories about the family and traditions that you all are keeping alive. The idea of picking the grapes from the very same vines they picked from generations ago must be an amazing feeling of connection to your people and to the land itself. That’s such a rare gift in today’s world. I also ordered some solar motion detector things off of amazon. One makes sounds and the other will turn on a sprinkler. We’ve had skunks take up residence in our garden and they’re eating everything up, even the flowers. We can’t go outside after dark because they seem to think they live here, and we’re afraid to get sprayed. The poor dogs can’t even go outside after dark. I feel sorry for them having to hold it until morning, no matter how bad they have to go. I hope these solar things work because these dang skunks spray all night when anything startles them, so the smell is even lingering inside the house. Keep your fingers crossed and please pray for us that it gets rid of them and we’ll do the same for you all. I love animals, but not so much when it comes to them wrecking the garden and keeping us and the animals trapped in the house. Stay cool. Be well & take care.

Try the corn 2 to 3 minutes in the microwave on high with the husks and silks still on. The microwave steams the corn in the husks. Let the corn sit for about a minute after you microwave the corn and then cut the stalk end off with a sharp knife. Then, you just squeeze the silks end and the corn comes out the cut end where the stalk was and it'll be clean of silks when it comes out. That method sure beats steaming up the kitchen in the hot summer months. There is many CZcams videos on it. It works perfectly for me. Thanks for the video.

When I was still living at my parents house a Middle Eastern woman that had moved in down the street saw we had a wild grape of some kind growing in a tree in our yard close to the road. She ask if she could pick some of the leaves to make stuffed grape leaves. Mom told her yes and for years she would come by and pick big baskets full. She told me one time she would freeze them and thaw as needed. She made the kind stuffed with rice, herbs, meat and I think pine nuts and then stewed in a tomato type sauce till done. wish I had gotten the recipe but was a teenager who could have cared less at the time, lol.

For those who might not know, garlic is very easy to grow. This is one plant that you can improve your harvest from one year to the next. After harvesting, set aside your biggest bulbs to replant in the fall. Eat the smaller garlic but replant the largest. If you do that each year, you'll continuously grow larger, better garlic each year. I've been doing this for several years and get really large bulbs.

If you have a bounty of grapes this year, knowing how much Matt likes his grape popsicles, you need to make a grape pie. I’d never had one until several years ago and oh my! It’s one of my favorite now. I’ll even process the grapes to the point that I can freeze them to make pies in winter. You do need a food mill or something to strain the seeds from the cooked pulp but it’s worth the trouble. Just look up Concord grape pie on line and you should find the recipe.

My mama felt that way about sweet potatoes… she grew up in a large farming family with nothing extra to go around and sweet potatoes were served every day and sometimes multiple times a day, she said they would peel down the peeling down the sides and pretend they had an ice cream cone 😢😢. I love sweet potatoes but I think about her and her feelings towards them every time. ❤

I got a lot done in my garden last evening. I have never grown butternut squash until this year and my gracious those things take up 10 feet or more of room. I have other things that I’ve succession planted and now those are starting to run so I had to go down the hill and get some more cages for them to grow up. Next year I’m definitely going to be doing the cattle panels bent over like an arbor for my vegetables to grow on. Love this time of year❤ your garden is always so pretty.

I have done of canning using a pressure canning. Enjoyed every minute of it. I am now 82 and haven’t canned for a few years but definitely enjoyed all of the bounty that we preserved over the years. We also made sauerkraut that turned out very good.

I look forward to your videos. We got a small shower here in our garden this afternoon. We had tomato sandwiches for lunch today. They were awesome, and i thought about Matt while eating. Our corn has really been good. we are eating it out of the freezer now.

We had a little rain shower this morning which is kind of unusual for us here in California. I looked out the window and the sun was shining too. I could hear my mom saying "the devil's beating his wife"😊

I still can and hot water bath. Not as much as I used to. cause I'm getting old. It's so nice to have those jars lined up on the shelf in the pantry.

Wish I could remember how my maternal grandmother made hominy. I cannot call that memory to my mind. But I do remember eating it. It was delicious. How funny you've brought forth so many memories from my childhood Tipper
    I love you for that.

Just found ur channel 2 days ago and im so happy I did! My bf and I just love it so much! We have two sons, 3 yr old and 11 month old and they’ve watched mama make granny’s holy smoke cake and chess cake. My first time making it and having it, it was super good!

My garlic did well this year. I’ve got some really large heads and cloves. I’m saving them to plant this fall. I’ve started processing some of the smaller cloves by roasting them and then freezing the cloves. It is great to add to soups, stews, stir fries and such. I have a freeze drier and freeze dry it make minced and powdered garlic. I’ve also fermented garlic in honey. Some of it I just store in a cold dark spot for fresh use. I’ll be busy with onions this week. My MIL would make onion rings and freeze them for a treat. I’m going to give it a try. My son wants some hot pepper and onion relish. I’ve done carmalized onions and French onion soup. So many choices of what can be canned.
Our corn didn’t do well at all. The pigs and chickens are getting the skinny four inch cobs. We planted another crop this week. It should be ready mid September.
