It is a South Indian dish, next time if you want to ready that batter, add little Fenugreek along with urad dhall.. we usually add Fenugreek to make idly and dosa.. it is mandatory

Idly perfect but sambar is not this is not to discourage you but no garlic and jeera in sambar and also don't mash the vegetables it is not necessary .you must put hing and Fenugreek powder for making sambar and avoid garlic and jeera for authentic taste of sambar

Add one handful of poha (after washing) or cooked rice while grinding the rice. It makes the Idli very soft and help in fermenting also. No need of baking powder.
You try coimbatore style tomato chutney for idly..u never like sambar for idly then..also use wet grinder n not mixer grinder..pour water slowly once in a while n not in one go while grinding urad dal..it gives u more quantity of urad dal flour n idly will be big n bouncy. Just a small tip as my mom n grandparents used to say..
