This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.

I, the Captain, fly through space on my pirate spaceship, with my crew, like our ancestors sailed the 7 seas, on Earth, millennia ago.
We all come out on deck during break, to hear the beautiful concert, of the Hurdy Gurdy, from Patty, while she sings, of songs long forgotten by time.
Today we listen to the 1980's.
A time, when music, still had effort.
We all sit back, and relax.
I wonder what it was like to live in those days, while I gingerly warm my glass of rum in my hands, sipping occasionally.

It's technically not a "heavy" cover and yet this must be the rawest, most aggressive rendition of Sweet Dreams I've heard so far

I found my way here many years ago because of Sea of Thieves. Stayed cause she's so talented.
When i was younger this song touched my soul. I heard it over and over again. Different versions from different people. I heard it so often that it lost its meaning and i became deaf to its tunes. But suddenly ... there was this young lady with the Hurdy Gurdy and the magical voice ... and the song went straight to my heart again. You rock !

it's often called a symphonia as well. Blame the british for the current silly name
In portuguese is "viola-de-roda". (Literally "guitar with wheel")
In Finnish the instrument is "kampiliira", "krank lyre". I tried one once in Stockholm music museum and fell in love. It was funny and nice. My dear friends did not like my improvisation. Thanks, Patty! Not only is your gurdy playing great, but also your tunes are excellent, somewhere between pop, rock, folk and you (or anyone else) name it!

Her vocals are similar in style to Eurythmics, but the hurdy gurdy makes the instrumental sound close to Marlyn Manson, so it’s like a classy fusion of both

bringing this eerie instrument into modern songs is damn haunting and well done. If you were accompanied by a Harbinger fiddle and bone percussion it would really blow the modern world away.

I may spell it wrong but I like it that way
I guess if it's bringing doom it'd be a harbinger - but if it's a death metal fretted fiddle it'd be hard & full of anger (it's a reference to the place name though, where it's thought to have originated).
I find it to be a very dark emotional instrument and first heard of it from a CD called The Devil's Tune...all songs played the hardanger... it amazed me. Like Patti hurdy playing.

I've recently(around 30 minutes ago) found out the existence of hurdy gurdy and i have come to the conclusion that its one of the greatest music instrument to ever be created by mankind

Second: the hurdy gurdy seems like it was made to produce sounds similar to the bagpipes without the health dangers (ie- bagpiper’s lung).

I used to think that Manson's version was the best, but it turns out that I was mistaken. I still think Manson did an excellent job, though.
Funny though, as most modern cover's of the song appear to be influenced by Manson's voicing of the riff (having more in common with the way Scott/Daisy had played the riff than the original Roland Juno 60 riff way programmed

I would like to know how she achieves such precise control of said dog. I read that generally the players do it with the speed of their cranking, but it's hard to see that she's putting effort into varying the speed that frequently here to account for the rapid starts and stops of the dog's barking.
