As for the position of Shaykh saalih himself, he did not state what his position is on this matter. But I think that it is very obvious what his opinion is when you compare his (very old) lectures that are recorderd on video or old pictures that were taken from him and compare them with recent ones. one more question. the LENGTH of the beard is not mentioned anywhere in any hadith. so we cannot say a short beard is haram. i agree the right size is the fist length. but can we make a short beard (not clean shave) haram? (note: length of the beard is not mentioned anywhere)
akhi jameel. it is not about the length, rather it is obligatory to grow it, meaning not cut it. however long it grows is the result of obeying Allaah and His Messenger
Abdur Rehman Mazhar There are numerous Hadith of Sahabah only cutting below a fist. The Prophet pbuh never advised them against this, so it would be default be something not forbidden to do. There are other Hadith that discuss the Prophet pbuh crying until his beard was soaked, which could not happen if he had a short beard. Other Hadith talk about his beard visibly moving while he prayed, so much so that people behind him pbuh could see it moving. Again, you couldn’t see a short beard moving-so this eludes to him pbuh having a larger beard. Other narrations discuss the Prophet dying his beard, again this could not happen with a short beard. So if you take all Hadith collectively, it is pretty clear that the Prophet pbuh commanded us to keep a beard, and that the beard he pbuh had, as well as the Sahabah and Tabi’un was at least a fist full in length (or more). Here is a bunch of Hadith that discuss the beard. Hope this helps. Allahu alam. sunnah.com/search/?q=Beard
The physical description of Muhammad peace be upon him and several companions was that they had large, thick beards touching the chest. By literal explanation, a beard would need to be longer than a fist to be able to reach one’s chest. Other marathons say Muhammad peace be upon him grabbed his beard and looked at it. Again, this wouldn’t be possible if it was short.
