The testing of this engine during development was done on glider, once they did high altitude test and reached 8000 meters (26 246 feet) with that

uh... the ammount of lift those wings give, you could probably use pedal power to fly it... and YES it has been done before, and yes, it was a very ultralight aircraft just like this.

@HiWetcam Would the Turbine powered glider make a nice private plane to fly around the airport vicinity with, for example, take off in Oakland, CA, fly 15 miles west to San Francisco and return to Oakland? What's cruising speed of the glider in powered flight?

Curious the practicality to fly longer distances given the higher speeds.
....only problem with Glider is the extra man-on-the-ground launch system....where does one get that extra person...? ....seems, on its face, to be an inconvenience....
God bless the folks at Sonex for these wonderful developments. I particularly feel, with their efforts, general aviation will gain more attraction in the new generation!

glider/jet combo has potential, not just as a small jet trainer but in its own right. Think about it, use the motor plus thermals to get up to altitude and then glide to your destination. Combined with the natural characteristics of a glider, a low weight low drag powerful powerplant could really come into its own. Also jet engines run more efficiently at high altitude, and gliders look built for it. Brilliant really.

i was thinking how i like the glider more while watching. Considering you cant shoot anyone down in the smaller faster more maneuverable jet whats the point.

Saw one of these at the Greenwood Lake Airshow in NJ last year - the sound coming from that tiny turbine engine was incredible!
You've got the best of both worlds, powered flight with the reassurance that if power is lost, you just simply glide to your destination.
Until you hit a swarm of birds.
The maneuverability on that jet looks amazing.
I was lucky enough to see this jet in Albuquerque this year and it was way faster than I expected.

I know right. I love glider flying but hate having to depend on someone and/or something else to get you up. I think they are selling the wrong product. Forget the Sonex, give me a glider with a stow-able jet!
Tristan MacRae I think if they can have two trailer wheels on the wingtips you can aluminate the extra hands on deck so to speak have a viable product. If no one’s done it already I think it adds just a few thousand dollars to the package but I could be wrong
Once you fly glider specially with a jet engine attached you will never fly any other aircraft

I love that glider, i think the glidee would be even more awesome with a twin jet setup, and twin horizontal mounted like the a10 in the sub sonex. and twin seater side by side setup too.

Very cool X 2! Just like everyone else, I thought the jet powered glider was really impressive. But I want that jet! ✈️ Ever since my first flight in my grandparents home-built airplane, I tried to talk to my grandfather who built it, a BD-4, into building the 5 or 10 next, with the jet engine. Unfortunately, they weren't very safe and it was a project that was I was never able to talk him into. This certainly gives the GA community a new option, and hopefully I convinces other companies to build/offer something similar!

Caproni ,the Italian aircraftcompany builded 5 two seater gliders with internal Jet engines in the 70's . Ing Ferrarin and Sonzio made that side by side seater ,all aluminium , 2 wheels with suspension.

I'd take the glider all the time! Imagine a modern twin glider like the DG1000, the Duo Discus or some Alexander Schleicher designs and this turbine engine instead of a noisy two stroke with a foldable prop as starting, climbing or coming home aid!

Bad ass plane! Oh and the engine is awesome. My brother built one of those and put it on a scooter and all sorts of welding fabrications! It went about 55 mph on the ground!

The jet-powered glider reminds me of one I saw at an air show in Kingman AZ in 2006. I believe they said they had mounted an engine from a jet helicopter on a glider. Took off under its own power and performed stunts. Turned off the jet and glided during acrobatics. Then turned the jet back on and gained altitude for more acrobatics. Was amazing!

if I had a lot of money I def would. buy this guy this thing is awesome man that engine has like 80% percent power output on that glider its so efficient that it can Bring those gliders just shy of 300mph thats insane for a 40lb engine.
Took soaring lessons in Calistoga early 70’s. Money scarce at the time. Wished I had followed through.

The ME163 was in fact rocket powered. It required two separate fuels which were corrosive to human flesh and extremely explosive. Not an aeroplane for civil flying. There is a least one replica flying but this is a glider and is aerotowed. This is how they trained the pilots in WW2. The ME163 is based on the Horten flying wings

People complaining about fuel usage just dont seem to get the fun factor with this plane. It looks well engineered and the jet engine is compact and sophisticated. If fuel usage is the big deal, drive your Prius to the airport to make yourself feel better.
Still half the fuel usage than a bugatti chiron and at a considerably higher speed
@@DinoAlberini Right? Personal aircraft is not a poor mans hobby. I have a friend that owns his own small plane. It's a blast and he can afford it. Its a prop plane along the lines of an Alaska bush plane. We take off and fly for an hour or so and land at remote lakes in northern Nevada. Fish for a few hours and back home. It would take half a day to travel there by truck.
Im surprised I didnt see one of these installed in a Civic yet!!!
