I lost my 11 week old grand daughter 6 years ago this coming June. On my first day back to work (just barely) my local jazz station played the Nat King Cole version on my way to work. It was as if she was talking to me, that everything will be all right. I still miss her every single day, and listen to his version daily first thing in the morning. The local station has played for me as well at the same time every year. This version is amazing as well. To all there is ALWAYS hope you just have to go find it. SMILE !!
I received the song "Smile" in the mail once. It was from my father who I couldn't see be cause he was in the hospital for months and months with TB. It was a giant experience for me. Eventually it diminished in size in my memory's days easing so much sadness, with a "band" aid. To this day it melts me. I was 5 years old at the time. ( He made it back to health too.) Thank you to Apple studios and all of the people in the recordings beauty. God Bless All of you. Thank you.
Well this just popped up on my CZcams recommendations today and blew me away. I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of Katherine before, so I've only heard of her after she had passed away. This is a wonderful memorial to her.

My wife and companion of 40 years surrendered to the Big C about 10 weeks ago. It was a shattering experience to see her final decline. After 10 weeks in the hospital out of state, all she wanted to do is come home to pass on. She got home, and died after less than a month of hospice care. But it was a victory that she died in her own bed. Every day, I listen to another version of Smile to keep me going.
As wonderful as Katherine's vocal is, tribute should also be paid to the musical genius of Charles Chaplain. If you study the melody, you will see that the theme repeats , but it always sounds new because he starts it on a different note each time. Certainly other songwriters have done this but he does it a little differently. It might be very subtle, but it is there.
