    In this video I’ll show you how to stretch a canvas to a stretcher bar in order to frame your paint by numbers. I was the custom framing manager at Michael's for almost 2 years, and I want to share with you this technique, so you can do it yourself and save money!
    I will show you how I stretch my own canvas on a 16x20" value canvas from Michael's. The canvas I use is a 16x20" with a 1/2" depth. I buy these when they are on sale for 5 for $9.99 or $10.99, which makes each "frame" about $2-3 each. In another video I will demonstrate the gallery wrap technique with 12x16" canvases, but for this video, I will use the 16x20" size.

      Deborah Bauer I totally understand, since I was the custom framing manager at Michael’s for almost two years. (I loved my job there!) It does get expensive to custom frame though, and although I think it is sooo worth it for some things, I struggled to justify spending that kind of money on my diamond paintings and PBNs.

    You should definitely also tag this as - What to do if the canvas you received isn't a standard size. When you measured your canvas it came out almost exactly the same as the "16x20" that I ordered. Plus my canvas is not square. I was watching it as part of your Playlist on how to frame (even though I know how from before PBN) but was delightfully shocked when I heard you say the first number. Thanks!

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 3 lety

      In other countries, 40cm x 50cm is a standard size, so it’s mostly those of us in the US that use the standard measurements instead of metric. A 16x20 probably wouldn’t fit in their frames. 😂😜

      You can use a Sharpie Water-based Paint Pen or a good white acrylic paint. I use Liquitex heavy body titanium white mixed with a diluted Flow-Aid, but 95% of the time, I just use that white sharpie paint pen.

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 3 lety

      A 45 degree angle helps to hold the canvas more taut, and they won’t come loose over time. You’ll notice if you buy one framed, they will be straight and very few of them. That’s because they mass frame theirs, but to really make the canvas super tight, and to keep them from getting slack when you work on them, the 45 is the best way to go!

      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 4 lety +1

      Eileen Dandashi I love the convenience of a framed canvas, but I have to be very careful not to rest my arm on it when I paint. That’s why I say it is a personal preference, because no matter how I paint on any surface, I put weight on that canvas. That could just be my laziness 😂.

Those come rolled or already stretched. I don’t know if you have seen my videos on Clear Gesso, but using that on your canvas before you paint is a “game changer”! • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 3 lety

      I’m actually stretching a 40x50cm in this video. The closest size to that is a 16x20” canvas. You can paint to the edge of your piece, and then you won’t have a white border like I show in this demo. You can size down to a 12x16, but your artwork will do a “gallery wrap”, and you’ll see it on all sides once you hang it.

      I personally don’t seal mine, but I plan to do a video on how to do it for those who want to. Acrylic paints are “heartier” than watercolors, and it wouldn’t hurt to seal them, but it isn’t necessary unless you want a satin or gloss finish.

    Do you do this before or after it's painted?

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 9 měsíci +1

      You can do it either before or after. It will not affect the paint if you’ve already painted your project.
      I actually prefer to stretch mine after I have painted, because when mine is stretched, I tend to rest my arm on the center of my piece while I’m painting, and that can cause slack in the middle of an already stretched canvas if it’s not super tight.

It works out beautifully, but you can do it either way. I just advise to do it however it is easiest for you. ☺️

    How can I make a frame at home

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 3 lety

      The cost of making a frame at home is way more than buying the $10.99 value pack of canvases from Michael’s. You get 5 in a pack, so you’re only paying a few cents more than $2 for each canvas. You can take off the canvas that is on the frame or leave it on to stretch yours over it.

    Ok. You’re officially my mentor and teacher. I’m not yet confident to do this on my very first purchase. But I 1. Found a paining I like from Gain Paint By Numbers online called Orb Flower. It comes framed in 60 x 60 cm...whatever that is, it’s the biggest they have (I like big, I have a big hole to fill inside and this should help full it). Next tine I’ll stretch & frame myself. That said, all your things are in my cart on Amazon from your links...accessories links. Looks like my usual...art I can make for just under $500 . Can you tell me, however, if you’ve had experience with this company “Gain Paint By Number”? I’m right on the edge, ready to pull the trigger....just need that extra “ nudge” to jump off the cliff. If it’s not asking too much. Hugs. (Accessories gotten from various videos of yours...)

    my canvas came folded and has creases, can I iron it?

      Yes, I have instructions for ironing, and it’s in this video on an image: czcams.com/video/bXqL1fiieQ4/video.html I can’t attach the photo here, but if you scroll through, I think those instructions are closer to the beginning.

    Thank you for the instructions. I love that fall canvas, could you tell me where to get that kit?

      I usually put that in the description, but I forgot. Then I had to go research this to find out where I got it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ This one came from VictoriasMoon.com.

    Can I ask one question? Is it okay to paint on it flat like that after it’s stretched on a frame or is it better to use an easel? I ordered a couple prestretched ones.

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 4 lety +2

      I painted on my pre-stretched paintings in my lap, so I think you can paint how you feel most comfortable. I’m just always careful not to put weight on it in the center where it’s weakest while I’m working. I just ordered an easel, which I haven’t set up yet, so I’ll see how well that goes with this painting, since I still have the entire center section to finish.

    Why don’t you buy just the wooden frame and then stretch your canvas on it? Maybe if it didn’t have a canvas underneath it would have covered the white portion of you’re canvas.

    • @MelanieBsCreativeStudio
      @MelanieBsCreativeStudio  Před 4 lety +2

      I could have taken off the canvas underneath but didn’t for the video, because it doesn’t fit either way. The paint by number canvases measure 40x50cm, so they are not ever an exact 16”x20”, but once stretched on the 16x20” stretcher bar, they will fit into a standard frame that size. Hope that makes sense. And instead of paying $15-20 extra for the junk frames that companies send, I paid less than $2 to stretch it. I can hang it just like this or add a 16x20 frame to it. Either way, it’s cheaper.
