Usually just adopted kids are a little aversive to their parents because of unfamiliarity and fear but Owen seemed so perfectly at home when he met you guys! He is soooooo cute

But given china 1-child policy (which applies only to the urban Han Chinese, not those rural villagers or minorities) and a preference for male over female, I find it strange any parent would want to abandon unless it was a teenage/single mother pregnancy or possibly a 2nd birth whereby the parents can't afford to pay the fines.

With Owen, we assume we know why, but as you might know, child abandonment is illegal, so there is no trace left of the birth parents or the exact reasoning. All I know is that it must have been a very difficult/sad experience for both them and their son. As for the 1-child policy, they changed it to 2 children a little over a month ago!

I have seen a short documentary on how some toddlers have been kidnapped or led away by some crooks when the parent(s) were busy tending to other matters. Some, like those uyghur children from Xinjiang (western china) have been kidnapped usually by their own people to work for theft syndicate and forced to snatch/steal/pickpocket from unsuspecting people in the big cities. Some might have been stolen from the maternity wards by insiders in cahoots with some of these child traffickers. Some parents could still be searching for their lost child even many years later, running from city to city, province to province in the hope of finding them. China is a country where I've very mixed feelings about its people and pace of developments. On the one hand, I have encountered quite a few warm and friendly people there. and if like me, you had travelled to a few more places in China, you'd also see it has many beautiful and diverse landscapes due to the huge latitudinal difference (deserts, alpine mountains and crystal blue lakes, pretty green meadows, grasslands etc), not just the smoggy cities that the media kept harping about. But on the other hand, it's true that China also has many problems which I find citizens from more liberal and responsible countries found it hard to reconcile with, given it's rich ancient civilisation. Problems such as a paranoid and tight-fisted govt (in terms of dissent from the people), disregard for environmental health and the health of its own people, child kidnapping, unethical in selling adulterated food (eg. rat meat pass off as yak meat, which a chinese national there advised me abt being cautious in the food I eat), etc. Let just say I'm ok with China as a gd tourist destination since I'm just there for a while, but not an ideal place to live and prob to work. :) given it's paranoia and social problems.
ymhktravel - It's hard to get into the mindset of why someone would give up there child, but what if the only way to save your child medically was to give up your parental rights? What if you did not have enough money to pay for a surgery that would save their life, and the only way to guarantee the surgery was to abandon your child? Would you love your child enough to do that? Whenever we talk about child abandonment, it comes with much emotion and complexity - so much that you and I probably will never understand. There is also the element of corruption as you stated above in countries all over the world as it pertains to children (human trafficking). However, can you not also see the beauty of a child that is given a loving family and a family that is given a precious child? It's a messy and beautiful thing, adoption.
Ben Robie I cannot disagree to those possibilities (it could very well be) you have stated in your first para. As with most things, there are 2 perspectives to the same issue, like a coin having 2 sides. I guess whether the child was given up in the hope that he will be taken in by someone that can give him a better life or he was kidnapped by child traffickers, we'd never know unless the biological parents are known.
