I used to swap them out course and weather dependant, but as I age the 7 wood rules most of the time, its just more flexible especially for the approx 200 yard par threes
Best explanation of the difference between the 2 clubs that I have seen, mostly because you presented it in an simple easy to understand way, well done! I had been researching this exact thing recently. I historically have difficulty hitting hybrids for what ever reason and I was wondering if I really needed one ( and of course learn how to hit it better). Having watched your video I think I can put that on the back burner and concentrate on other things now.
I've carried a 7 wood for years. I love it because of the loft and stopping power. I own 2 hybrids which both found a deserved place in my collection of clubs at home. I totally agree that the hybrids do have a draw flight but too much for my liking at times. Also my hybrids, which are Callaway, have a closed look at address. This takes away my confidence in hitting a clean straight shot.
You need to find some Adams V3 hybrids as I have played the Adama Idea Tech V3 forged for 10 years now and Carry 3h-19*, 4h-22*, 5h-25* & 6h-29* and I can spin the ball back with everyone as they are the only Hybrids I have ever hit that have sharp grooves! I also only play one FW Wood and its an Admas Sweet 16 * tight lies newer wood. One of the easiest FW woods to ever hit off the fairways!! Even the old originals are some of the best FW ever to be made!!!
I have a 7 wood but rarely carry it. The course I play on is very windy and so a lower ball flight is preferable. The hybrid is more versatile out of the rough and off the tee.
Interesting video mate . I recently went back to a seven wood after many years . I absolutely love this club as it’s easier to hit with height and let’s face it , it is the equivalent of a four iron . A lot of people struggle with their long irons . 👍🏌️♀️⛳️
Mix of pros and cons. Having lived in the US Midwest, Texas and Oklahoma, the wind conditions can play a major role. The higher you hit it, with a fairway wood, the more the wind can move it. If the wind is 10+ mph, I would be using a hybrid.
I have a Titleist 980-f 21-degree fairway wood (7 wood ) I have been playing for years. I bought it for $20.00 maybe? And over time as I`ve aged, the club has aged with me. So what I have done, Is I have had a senior flex shaft put on it and I have opted to leave the shaft length at 46 inches, Now I have vertically and it really is my go to club.
Ypur chart showed dispersion which you did not discuss. My experience matched your chart in that the dispersion on the 7 wood is larger. Another thing you did not address was hitting a low punch shot where the 4 hybrid is dramatically better. I have both clubs and will swap them out based on the course I will be playing. I do find myself using the hybrid more often. I am a 75 year old senior with a 12 index.
I got rid of my hybrids and replaced them with long irons rather than woods - Mizuno Fli Hi 2- and 3-irons - and I absolutely love hitting them. Not sure a 7-wood would have a place in the bag, but it would be interesting to try one.
There's so many options at this end of the bag, and 90% of the time it comes down to personal preference like this! Thanks for your comment and let me know if you ever try out a 7 wood - Dan
I have the mizuno fli hi 3 and 4 iron which I like I decided to try the mizuno 001 7 wood it’s a real weapon easy to hit and flies high and straight wouldn’t be without it better than hybrids in my opinion.
What i find interesting is both clubs are the same loft, assuming around 21*. But travel similar carry distances based on your data even though the 7w has 6 more yards of peak height. Yet a 7w is going to be around 42" while a 4hy is going to be around 40".
It's winter, so no golf. So I'm actually in the process of building a 7 Wood. Might replace my 3H if it plays similar to the one I tested at Golf Galaxy. Great video, thanks!
I carry a 3HL and 7 wood rogue st max and coming back to golf after 30 years it’s a no brainier. I used to play blades 2 to PW but with my 921 forged going around 15 yards longer I only carry 5 to gap
your new 5i is the same length and loft as your old 3i..just to boost your ego and to make you fork out your hard earned dollars..ps these 7ws have the same loft as your old 5w.
You cherry picked hitting with the wind, and then hit a low hook with the hybrid - no wonder it looked super low on the shot racer. Reverse that and hit into the wind, and I’m picking the hybrid all day. Everyone is on the bandwagon of 7W and even 9W at the moment, but they are really hard to flight down, which makes them pretty one-dimensional. Whereas a 4hybrid can be more easily kept low into the wind, but can also hit a high fade to get it landing soft. For me Hybrid is the perfect compromise between the wood and long iron.
I live in high wind areas, so the extra height isn’t something I always want. The wind speed at peak height will throw my accuracy all over the place, and I could easily miss the green.
Got rid of my hybrid because I had a tendency to hook it . Recently bought a 7 wood but we are of mats and not really getting honest data yet but I think it’s better for me so far .
I was having the same problem when I hit my hybrid and bought a heavenwood about a year ago. I love it for shots ranging from 205 to 235 yards. As a matter of fact, I hardly ever hit my 4iron anymore.
I carry both a 7-wood (22*) and a 22* hybrid. I've found I use the 7-wood more, and prefer to hit my 25* hybrid more than the 22* because of ease of launch. So the 22* hybrid is probably wasting space for me...
I find the 7 wood flies further than the 4 hybrid.....and especially so if I hit a lower shot. Probably about a 20 yard difference. I'm wary about using a 7 wood on a 200 yd hole....just because that ball can really fly. Hybrid is more accurate.....and a safer choice. For me, the 7 wood is a great long fairway shot. Better than hitting a 3 or 5 wood, in regard to consistency and loft.
I prefer a hybrid as a more versatile club - better from the rough, you can chip with it and choke down to keep low on longer mishits when you need to get the ball back into the fairway.
Good club. Just know its limitations. Its essentially a cross between a 5w and 3hy. Wont be as long as a 5w but longer and straighter than a 3hy. Basically a Super 2Hy on steroids.
currently i am trying to find one more club in my bag : TAYLORMADE BRNR MINI DRIVER COPPER 13.5 degree or Qi10 Max 3 wood 16 degree or PXG Black Ops 4 wood 17 degree i currently also have the Cleveland Hywood 4+ ( 20 degrees ) and the Qi10 Max 7 wood 23 degrees i am trying to find a club between my driver Stealth 2 HD 9 degree and my 7 wood Dan which of those three i listed would be my best bet for versatility i am unable to test any of them out I am 59 years old 90-94 mph swing speed and a 7 handicap also anyone else have any thoughts ? thx for your video by the way well done cheers from Vulcan Canada
I’m looking to put a 7 wood in my bag looking at the sub 70 949 x , it has adjustable weights and the company sub 70 makes good stuff. Direct to consumer.
You are more accurate with the hybrid, weird how you ignored that data. Accuracy wins golf games, not stopping power. Get a higher spinning ball. But accuracy all day is my choice
It also depends on what type of club because there are newer 7 woods compared to older 7 woods butt. I've never actually been a fan of the hybrid is kind of being out use these days
A hybrid is definitely an easier club to hit from the rough. I would say the 7 wood is still workable from poor lies providing the ball isn't buried down too much and it can still progress the ball well in the rough - the hybrid is still easier though. I think this could be a comparison test for another video soon!
Thanks for the comparison. I have taken my G425 3 wood out of the bag as I hardly use it. Now got a G430 21 deg 7 wood. Not used it yet. Also have a 22 deg hybrid. Do I need both?
I got rid of my 3 wood when it went it went but I would top it and waste 3 shots a round I've reduced my squad this year but I'm thinking of a 7 wood. I can't use hybrids. Everyone different
I have a 5 hybrid and love it. But I went from a 5 wood I wasn’t getting on with to a 3 hybrid and absolutely hate it I’m now thinking of going back to a 5 wood. 😂
i will use it in certain situation around the green too. maybe 1m of fringe and 8m of green...around that. my distance control is way better for that type of shot with 7w bump than any other club.
I used to swap them out course and weather dependant, but as I age the 7 wood rules most of the time, its just more flexible especially for the approx 200 yard par threes

Agree…that’s why the pro,s change in and out depending on conditions …usually links courses that might swap from a 7 wood to a iron or hybrid

I'm considering replacing my 4h with a 7w. The draw bias in hybrids makes me swing defensively. I like the option of working the ball when I need to.
I got rid of my hybrids and replaced them with long irons rather than woods - Mizuno Fli Hi 2- and 3-irons - and I absolutely love hitting them. Not sure a 7-wood would have a place in the bag, but it would be interesting to try one.

I have the Ping G425 7 wood, but at 20.5* of loft, it’s really more like a 5 wood in my opinion (loft jacking isn’t only being done to irons!).😉
The Pings are adjustable to add or subtract loft up to 1.5 degrees. I adjust mine to get the distance and flight I want.
The biggest problem with the 7 wood (and the higher ballflight) is when playing in the wind.
Love my g425 seven wood. It replaced my five wood. My g425 four hybrid does go a little further than the seven wood because of the roll.
High wind 4h….if roll is dangerous 7W at 21*…….no 5W in my bag….4h at 23* more versatility
You cherry picked hitting with the wind, and then hit a low hook with the hybrid - no wonder it looked super low on the shot racer. I have two 7 woods. One is 27° loft and the other is 22° offset. I use the 27° a lot more as the 22° offset 7 wood feels more like a 5 wood or hybrid
Not really two 7 woods , more like 7&9 woods ?
7 wood is the ultimate cheat code, love mine.
I use both actually. I like options. 7 Wood is a real weapon for me though.
I live in high wind areas, so the extra height isn’t something I always want. The wind speed at peak height will throw my accuracy all over the place, and I could easily miss the green.
Finally another lefty I can watch
I have a 7 wood. Great club. I was wondering if I should swap for the hybrid for fairway shots bit off the tee my 7W is a monster..lol
Great video !

I have a progen 7 wood that cost me £7 on e bay great club best value to quality ratio in my bag by a long way
My G425 7w is never leaving my bag. Hybrid is collecting dust in my garage.
I find the 7 wood flies further than the 4 hybrid.....and especially so if I hit a lower shot. Probably about a 20 yard difference. Can you do a 7W vs Heavenwood?
I prefer a hybrid as a more versatile club - better from the rough, you can chip with it and choke down to keep low on longer mishits when you need to get the ball back into the fairway.
Nice video. Sounds like it would be foolish for me not to get a seven wood.
Have you tried the Cleveland Hy-Wood seems to be a really good club Ive just invested in one and would to know your opinion ?
Good club. Just know its limitations. Its essentially a cross between a 5w and 3hy. Wont be as long as a 5w but longer and straighter than a 3hy. Basically a Super 2Hy on steroids.
I’ve got a 7W and no hybrid, find it easier to hit FW. Pity though that the club manufacturers don’t think too highly about us lefties..
us lefties take what we can get brutha. like 4am at the disco. my bag is a motley crew of clubs
currently i am trying to find one more club in my bag :
TAYLORMADE BRNR MINI DRIVER COPPER 13.5 degree
or
Qi10 Max 3 wood 16 degree
or
PXG Black Ops 4 wood 17 degree
i currently also have the Cleveland Hywood 4+ ( 20 degrees ) and the Qi10 Max 7 wood 23 degrees i am trying to find a club between my driver Stealth 2 HD 9 degree and my 7 wood Dan which of those three i listed would be my best bet for versatility i am unable to test any of them out I am 59 years old 90-94 mph swing speed and a 7 handicap also anyone else have any thoughts ? thx for your video by the way well done cheers from Vulcan Canada
7W distance similar to a 5Hybrid?
I’m looking to put a 7 wood in my bag looking at the sub 70 949 x , it has adjustable weights and the company sub 70 makes good stuff. Direct to consumer.
I have 52 HCP (yeah, I suck :D ).
Please help, I don't know what to do between 4 iron (that I cant control) and driver :(
You are more accurate with the hybrid, weird how you ignored that data. Accuracy wins golf games, not stopping power. Get a higher spinning ball. But accuracy all day is my choice
The hybrid missed the green and 7 wood was on the green? I’d say the 7 wood was more accurate
2yds difference in dispersion 😅
2 yards 😂😂 that’s the same number effectively on any golf course ffs
It also depends on what type of club because there are newer 7 woods compared to older 7 woods butt. I've never actually been a fan of the hybrid is kind of being out use these days
Which 1 is better out of the rough?
I would say the hybrid is definitely the more versatile of the two clubs from the rough
I was told that a hybrid has greater height. Meaning it holds the green better.
I just got myself a Mizuno 7 H. Strike is like butter and comes down with snow on it. Having not hit a 7 w I would stick with my new hybrid. 😄
Hybrid all day. Shorter shaft, less dispersion.
What is a 7 wood like out of rough compared to a hybrid?
A hybrid is definitely an easier club to hit from the rough. I would say the 7 wood is still workable from poor lies providing the ball isn't buried down too much and it can still progress the ball well in the rough - the hybrid is still easier though. @@GolfMonthly good idea
Thanks for the comparison. I have taken my G425 3 wood out of the bag as I hardly use it. Now got a G430 21 deg 7 wood. Not used it yet. Also have a 22 deg hybrid. Do I need both?
7.Wood for me.
I got rid of my 3 wood when it went it went but I would top it and waste 3 shots a round I've reduced my squad this year but I'm thinking of a 7 wood. I can't use hybrids. Everyone different
If both clubs go around 208 carry, then why would you *not* use the one with the loft to stop it where you expect it to.
He said he likes the hybrid to tee off with because of the longer roll/ lower peak height
And in windy conditions, the lower flight can be more controllable with less distance loss. So, it could be condition dependent.
Both seem to be carrying a little excess spin. But that could be desirable if youre main intention is to hold firm greens
At my age the 7 wood is so easy to hit !! A 4 iron is hard to hit !!
A pity alot of manufacturers don't make 7 woods
Every major one does though.
@@lawbinson only ever seen the Ping featured
Most manufacturers will offer 7 woods as a custom fit option in the latest line of clubs, I just happened to be featured the Ping here!
@@GolfMonthly gotta wonder why it's a custom fit and not openly offered as part of the line up on the shelf.
Taylormade, Callaway, Ping, Cleveland, and Tour Edge all have stock 7 woods on the racks in our store.
I have a 5 hybrid and love it. But I went from a 5 wood I wasn’t getting on with to a 3 hybrid and absolutely hate it I’m now thinking of going back to a 5 wood. 😂
Ping 425sft cranked to 23.5 love it
You aimed RIGHT on the hybrid 😂
Eh?? He was aiming if anything further left with second club 😂
Strikes have to be identical or it’s totally useless you should know that
“A little bit hooky”. I heard it quack.
If it’s windy, or a poor lie, use hybrid. Otherwise 7w for me
10.6 degree launch for a hybrid??? You lost me right there. That is low for a driver
Easy for me can't use a hybrid.
Yes a think 7 wood is becoming more common I have one in my bag and use it for chipping around the greens 🏌🙂👍
i will use it in certain situation around the green too. maybe 1m of fringe and 8m of green...around that. my distance control is way better for that type of shot with 7w bump than any other club.
