As far as graze there is something similar in the Stars/Worlds/Cities Without Number games called shock damage. It doesn’t apply if the opponent’s AC is above a certain rating based on the weapon, and there are different foci (feats) that PCs can take that either improve their ability to do shock damage, or reduce your vulnerability to shock damage. So it seems the roots of graze seems to be coming from an OSR game.
00:50 - It is actually pronounced "Ar-CAN-a" because it lacks the E that the word arcane has on the end. You can see this difference when you look at how the letter E on the end modifies the word CANE (walking stick) vs CAN (metal container). So it is not "Ar-CANE-a" and it is also not "Ar-CAW-na".
Most of all of this stuff can be handled by a creative dungeon master. All of these extra bells and whistles just manifests in a slower game that resembles a video game. For the life of me I can’t understand why if you have first or second edition, you are all set you don’t need anything else. That’s more than enough! All of this stuff is just a money grab as you all know.
It's IT lingo but completely non sequitur to anybody that wants to true roleplaying game experience. They're phasing out the DMs by adding so much complexity no human can run the game.
Damn . When you hit and did crap damage, that's what we called "grazing". You still need to hit to graze 🤦♂️ As soon as you start adding/changing more crap, to simulate reality, the clunkier, slower and more tedious the game at the table becomes. D&D, pre wotc did what it was designed to do. We're there issues? Sure there was, but we figured things out and even came to like some of them. D&D doesn't know what it is anymore, much like the people working on it, I guess. Maybe they thought they could make a better version, but they have moved so far from what the game was intended, they should have slapped another name on it (granted, it probably wouldn't sell without the name recognition).
Good video, Joe 👍
Still have to catch up on the Joe and bro vid. Keep'em coming 🤘
Agreed, grazing is just going to draw out the battles even more. Which is the highlight of any game however can be the most boring. Due to the mechanics and OP on HP in 5e
@@1stleveldmgames798 I think the other weapon mastery abilities will also slow the game down, not just graze - can you imagine two fighters fighting each knocking the other back, parrying their opponents blow, knocking people prone, then doing it all over again as they struggle to maintain a fighting stance and actually just *hit* the other guy. Also, the earlier editions of the game already have this mechanic, many don't bother using it.
... I've missed do many times in life
Yup. Me too. There’s a generation that doesn’t believe they should ever miss anything I guess.
Every time that Todd Kendreck guy interviews someone from WOTC, it reminds me of hard hitting journalist Mary Hart interviewing a celebrity on Entertainment Tonight in the 80’s.
Ugh, you are such an old Grognard neckbeard!
Love ya, Joe! 😉
@@Joethelawyer I had to stop your video and go right to the source material and do areaction video - because this is a new level of BS
You can't really complain about Fighters using magic while simultaneously praising the Ranger, which is a fighter who uses magic.
You can't really complain about pasta salad having tomato sauce while simultaneously praising spaghetti, which is a pasta that usually has tomato sauce.
This is why I prefer games like GURPS and Chaosium, combat is lethal as can be and you aren't sitting there, whittling down each other's hundreds of HP 🙄
Agreed that WotC can't do anything right, and watching them is like watching a train wreck. I feel sad every time I see Chris Perkins, because, man, I used to love watching him DM. And I think he, at least, has an authentic love for the game. But he is sleeping with the devil...
There *are* old school classless RPGs in which you can mix things up. And multi-classing has been a part of things since AD&D.
In DCC RPG you can play a race-as-class elf, which is a spellsword along the lines of Elric.
Some people don't like peas in their mashed potatoes. Other people are fine with it.
Perkins isn't sleeping with the enemy, he's just getting sodomized by them- and telling everyone else that they should try it too......
Great rant highly enjoyable and you're right if you miss you miss. But they could say when you hit you do varying degrees of damage based on how high the roll was. Some thoughts I've been having lately.
Woo hoo, in 2024 my furry holy rogue blade dancer will finally be able to shoot fireballs out of his arsenhoole!
5e Ranger is one of the most powerful class in the game and yet people feel like it's one of the weakest, no wonder they don't have a clue on what to do with them, thieves have the same problem but reversed, their designers right now are way to mediocre to do a decent job with whatever the next edition will be
I'm curious why you think rangers are more powerful than most think they are.
Lol. What a bunch of lying BS. So tired of them.
And btw, graze has always existed in all versions of DnD. It's called rolling a 1 on your damage dice.
This is why the OSR remains AWESOME.
@@Joethelawyer that's right! They can try to demean, belittle and outright lie about us, yet we still stand. I'm not stopping any time soon.
I loathe 5e! They took out "Everything!" I loved about the game so they can "speed up" the game! They nerfed all the good spells and added a bunch of limitations! Garbage!
Why such a constant focus on certain martials? Wizards suck over level 13 now because of the reduced spell slots, low spell dc saves, and legendary resistances
He did not say everyone is going to learn magic. He said that other characters will be able to learn mastery abilities using a feat like fighters could take magic initiatite feat to learn magic.
Everyone has magic? Runequest tried that... no one plays it LOL 3rd/PF1e for life.
Tell that to Chaosium, the Design Mechanism, D101 Games, Cubicle 7 Games, et al.
Apparently, "no one" is providing them enough money to keep creating games and content in which anyone can have magic.
@@smrsh Must be a labour of love. I'm sorry that no one plays Runequest, but that's simply a fact. The End.
@@madquest8 there is a public for Runequest, they just announced a 10 volume Gods of Glorantha line of supplements
@@madquest8 it all depends on demand VS supply. I would think Chaosium have relatively low print runs that meet the demand for the different lines. COC is obviously their bread and butter
Welcome to D&D 6e where every player character is a god and all non-player characters are just there to make you more powerful.
Haha. Yup, well said Rachael
Thats the truth. Thats why I have been search for 2 years for a new system. I discovered the OSR movement and recently new systems that dont make players Gods
@@1stleveldmgames798 I've returned to B/X for conventions and AD&D 1st ed for home games. All other editions are only fertile ground to mine for ideas, gears, spells, and adventures. I find little use for most new monsters (as they are over powered). I use feats BUT you buy them (spend your XP) to get using the fighter's XP chart to get them. I also limit how many you can have based on the Stat that it is based on. 0-3.
That’s how I treat them too. As a resource for houserules
