While working in the shop you look-up and you see 'Old Glory' you can pause and think of what she means to you as an American and we as Americans have always had a knack of making things work.... Well at Merlin's Old School Garage... Merlin takes 'American Made' and makes it work.
    It's kinda the thought... "It's what's inside that count's" ... Amen

My shop uniform company used to provide me with an endless supply of welding rods. But nobody torch welds any more. But you can use coat hangers for TIG welding, so maybe there will be a resurgence of coat hanger welds. ...and your flag is fine. Look at the flag on the right shoulder of any US soldier's uniform. The blue field always faces the direction the soldier is looking.

In my teens (1971-72) I worked in a welding shop. We welded on gas tanks a lot. And we always did exactly as you did. We used car exhaust and a hose to displace any oxygen.

I had an uncle who was oxy-cutting a 44gall drum top out to make a rubbish-tin. After that we did the same, or fill with hot-water first. the heat brings the gas out of the metal.

Was changing welder tank from 6" to normal 3" cap for a key lock cap...

The exaust method is probably number 2 way ...

This is a great episode. I do most of my exhaust work with Gas/Coat hanger welding. A young tech at a shop I worked for had a nagging exhaust leak. I welded it up for him with coat hangers. Apparently, he had never seen that before. He was jazzed and went on to do other welding on his car with that process. The 32 grill and saving the crank handle hole was a great call. As far as the Flag issue ... looking out from Your shop it is correct! I'm the bitter old dude that starting in the 90's, always kept the 'Welcome' mat turned around on my front porch as to say, "Don't Even Bother". LOL 🤠

I remember using coat hangers but metal ones are getting hard to find so I bought weldind rod which wasn't very expensive 15 years ago. Seems like I never gas weld anymore. Wire is still handy. I see Ian Roussle use it for weld filler. I think a hot rod with paddle tires on the dunes would be a hoot to see but I doubt the front engine mount would be as effective.

My Dad read a book before I was born about how to hotrod a flathead Ford. It suggested using Lanolin USP (he got some at the pharmacy) applied to the back side of the main and rod bearings. He taught me to green scotchbrite the backside lightly and wipe clean. We would apply a light film and install the bearings. Upon rebuilding the motors at the end of the season, bearings would have to be knocked out...

The Flag. If you look at the right sleeve of a U.S. military field uniform the field of stars is always forward. I heard the story behind it once but I can’t remember it but I think it has something to do with how the flag would appear to an advancing force. Never the less the field of stars is always on the right of the uniform’s right shoulder patch. You flag is displayed correctly for admiring in your shop.
Those headlights are perfect. That’s my favorite look for old Fords thru 1935 . 💙 Blue Ovals
