    This was a great vid. I just told my adult son..who is getting his first system..that he needs a sealed box...BECAUSE they hit harder. I was just proven wrong.
    Ive believed for years, that sealed hits harder. I had 2 old Kicker 15s in a sealed box and I used to set off Car alarms..and THAT was my guage. They sat in the back of a Sport Explorer and had plenty of airspace to expand.
    Thanks for the vid.

      This agrees with the iron law that of course more space makes more Bass.
      I've always loved triple or quadruple sealed setups because you can fit twice the drivers in the same amount of air space while maintaining a tighter more accurate sound that has more impact.
      I'm actually headed out to the garage right now to start building my sealed enclosure for three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12s. They are the best deal out there by a mile if you want ultra high performance xbl2 motor sealed subwoofer setups.

    @Kcducttaper1 Před 4 lety +10

    You've probably gone on to a different setup by now, but I wonder what your air speed is in those ports. They might be compressing your output. Also, porting increases the volume at a specific frequency, so it's not necessarily 'supposed' to be +3dB everywhere in the range. Your port tuning and your listening area's tuning are two very different things.

I just haven't been able to find a sub with the same force factor. I went to 4 12" JL audio 12w3 running off twice the power. It was loud but nothing even close to the beating the 2 Fosgate DVC 12's would give you. Once you have achieved the max power your speakers can take this obviously isn't true. Since nobody answered I will I absolutely know that the flatter response and better transient response of sealed makes it far superior for me but then again I'm a 46 year old musician that's been a lot of time on a metronome.
      Also the earthquake reproduction characteristic of sealed where it literally displaces a section of air in your vehicle that is heaven and a ported does not do this it just fans around a whole bunch of air from the port and sub. It never has that instant earthquake shock type impact to it and I like that.

    But a lot of peoples love the sound of ported enclosures. I don't discuss that, And build a lot of ported for them.
    So, my point is about the phase of the port.. You could'nt make a real waves with a mécanical off-phase output in this configuration.. I prefer compansate the roll off by more power and good equalisation, who let clean lower band make me smiling.

    1st, if that vehicle is in 50mph front end collision, that box is going to hit the back of your daughter's head at 50mph. That red strap around the PVC is not going to hold it in place.
    2nd, your sealed volume is larger than your ported volume because the ports are now part of your volume.
    3rd, ported should always be louder then sealed at the resonant frequency. A ported box is optimized for a specific frequency at the expense of others.

    • @E4EonEbay
      @E4EonEbay  Před 2 lety

      You are correct in that there will be roughly 100 cubic inches for a cylinder 4x8 or 0.058 cubic feet added to the sealed volume per side so 2.558 cf sealed vs 2.5 cf ported would technically be more accurate. However I honestly don't feel that 0.058cf (less than 1% , 0.232% to be exact) difference in enclosure volume would have altered the outcome enough to mention. Thanks for watching and commenting! (PS, her rear seatbacks fold and lock upright and she drives with rear seat belts latched in an X. The strap so it doesn't move left or right under normal driving, if seatbelts can hold back two 200lbs people I'm sure they will hold the box from coming through the rear seats...)

      Regarding the speaker box, though, I am genuinely concerned. A 60mph head on collision (say, someone texting crosses the median) can generate enormous forces. It's not uncommon for 50 to 100 Gs to develop. Would your straps wrapped around that PVC pipe hold up a box weight 5,000 or 10,000 pounds or more? Maybe, but I would sleep better with the straps running through a few eye bolts on the sides 😉.

    3 dB is the theoretical max at the tuning frequency of the port where the back and front waves are perfectly in phase. Obviously people expecting 3 dB across the spectrum will be disappointed! But ported is still a good bet when well tuned. Even for SQ, with a blindfold and optimal tuning, and especially in a car, almost no one could tell the difference (except the ported would be louder and therefore better).
