Thank you very much for the book recommendation -- based on your high praise, I'll attempt to (very slowly, LOL!) read this book. For those who are interested, here's from the book's prologue: "I wrote about my mother, Mrs. Liang Qiufang-a common Chinese woman-her life's story, how our family struggled to survive like driftwood in the water, and the lives and deaths of those rural people in the central and southern hinterlands. If these ordinary people's experiences are not written down, they are destined to be buried deep."
