  • As the 20th century approached, Africa had been carved up among the European powers at the Berlin Conference. The two independent exceptions were the Republic of Liberia on the west coast and Ethiopia, or then still commonly known as Abyssinia, in the eastern Horn of Africa region. The newly unified Kingdom of Italy was a relative newcomer to the imperialist scramble for Africa. Italy had two recently obtained African territories: Eritrea and Italian Somalia. Both were near Ethiopia on the Horn of Africa and both were impoverished. Italy sought to improve its position in Africa by conquering Ethiopia and joining it with its two territories. Menelik II was the Ethiopian leader who pitted Italy against its European rivals while stockpiling weapons to defend Ethiopia against the Italians.

There has been an Abyssinia for a very long time, But Emperor Menelik ll made Ethiopia what she is today... He expanded the empire, repelled an Italian invasion, and modernized Ethiopia. He was truly a great Emperor. I really do hope that Eritreans will find it in their hearts to accept that. Yes, it is sad and unfortunate that he was not able to protect Eritrea from the invading Italians. The reason is pretty complex.

I mean as a non-Ethiopian fascinated with the country and its unique history I would love to see this. I mean 18th century battles often look very fantastic on the silver screen and it would be great to see the reverse of a film like Zulu ‘64 where instead of the Europeans defeating a mass of African troops it would be the opposite. It would be a very nice contrast to most movies depicting colonial europeans vs natives, especially those in Africa.

True I mean I think its a great inspirational event but Ethiopia was one of the few countries even able to beat back a colonial power while the rest of the continent was divided amongst British, French, German, Portuguese (also Dutch and Ottoman depending on the time period). So it is a victory for Ethiopia but not as much the rest of Africa considering it had already been colonised and wasnt able to have this staggering victory like at the Battle of Adwa and repel a European force, also unfortunately the Italians would come back en masse and use horrific methods to raze Ethiopia in WW2.

Well other sources say there were more casualties on the Italian side,
about 60%, and only about 10% of the ethiopian army suffered death. Why is it that everytime an African nation defeats a European nation in battle the narrative is always that "Even though they won, they suffered more casualties"?

    • @jamesbritt5888
      @jamesbritt5888 Před 5 lety

Both figures are true, the Ethiopian army suffered more casualties in raw numbers, but a smaller percentage since their army was much larger, about 100,000. The battle of Adwa was a clear victory for Ethiopia that combine with the use of soft power in europe forced Italy to sue for peace.

Ethiopia's claim of being the only country in Africa to never be colonized came at the expense of Eritrea's sovereignty and independence.
In 1889, the Italians signed the Treaty of Wuchale with then Ethiopian king Menelik II who essentially granted Eritrea to Italy in exchange for recognition of Ethiopian sovereignty. Italy also promised Menelik II financial assistance and military supplies.
Eventually, Ethiopia did defeat Italy in the battle of Adwa (approx. 100,000 Ethiopians vs 20,000 Italians) and afterwards Menelik signed an agreement recognizing Eritrea as a sovereign state of Italy. Basically, Eritrea was used as a political tool to gain leverage with the Italian colonialist when it was convenient for Ethiopia's survival.
This should explain the Derg's barbaric regime, Woyane's betrayal and the common attitude of entitlement towards Eritrea.

    • @dinishtekle194

      Lila A.
Eritrea was a different political entity to abyssinia, throughout history it was known as the kingdom of bahr, but it was still part of abyssinia before the zemene mesafint with many other kingdoms, like the kingdom of shewa or gojjem.
It was only after the zemene mesafint that abyssinia was united but the kingdom of bahr wasn't, and italy gained ground on eritrea with abyssinia battling againts italy under yohannes IV even before the first italo-ethiopian war.
after the battle of adaw over half of italy's forces situated in the horn was crushed, so italy did a peace treaty with abyssinia.
So in short, the tigrays of eritrea weren't part of the political identity known as abyssinia in the times of the battle of adaw, so you writing it as abyssinia just giving another province of itself to italy and not caring for said population is a disrespect to history.
The only reason amharas and tigrays consider eritrea as part of ethiopia is because of the fact that historically you were part of abyssinia, and such identity as "eritreans" never existed back then, it is a pre-colonial identity of such country, the only political and national identity that existed there was the one of bahr.

He is phenomenal incompetent because cannot understand the role of the Russian military mission in the army of Menelik II. The memories of Russian military advisers who had seen battle near Adwa with my own eyes is the most objective historical source. Unfortunately, the historical fact is that the supply of arms from Russia to Ethiopia at the end of the nineteenth century was not successful, because most of the weapons were blocked in ports by decisions of the colonial powers (from London to Djibouti). It is a fact that Ethiopia not only did not have a regular European-style army, but the village militia's feudal army largely did not have firearms and the available firearms were mostly very old muskets. This is evidenced by the Russian officers-volunteers from the mission Leontief, they doubted the possibility of victory until the turn of the battle, because to manage the Patriotic enthusiasm of the crowd of Ethiopian peasants was very difficult for Ethiopian commanders of Menelik II. (Could be a panic) Because Attack Ethiopian peasants-volunteers could drown in blood because of fire superiority of Italians, but taken to Ethiopia incredible way artillery could help the attacker to overcome dead area and start in hand to hand combat.
