- Ahoy Legends! This week I head away on the ultimate trip! A solo overnight surfcasting adventure! After spotting the perfect weather window I hit the beach in search of tailor (bluefish, shad, elf) with the plan of fishing late into the night and cooking up an awesome feed on the beach. I also run through a lot of different tips and tricks to help you master the beach!

Seriously one of the best beach videos out there in showing the work put in to find the fish, well done. Far too many sponsored anglers make it look like every trip is a fish a cast, giving unrealistic impressions to the general folk. That rod is a 13’6 prototype rod wilson are working on at the moment. Been super happy with it so far!

One way we would burley a gutter was too dig a trench along the waters edg at low tide and bury the burley mixed with sand in it.
As tide rises the wash does an amazing job of distributing the burley along the gutter with the direction of sweep.

Sammy, I'm as old a dirt, and I want to share my experience of catching what you call Tailor I call Elf.
Back in 1970 being a new immigrant to South Africa and living in Port Elizabeth, my new South African friend's father was the timekeeper at the harbour and had unrestricted movement therein. His father and the two of us would fill a navy kitbag on an evening and a morning and sell the fish roadside the next day, five razorblades on string for a Rand and we sold them all. We'd keep a couple for bait and rolled them in. We would fish at the Bloulig (Blue light) which was green, ie starboard side to port entry. We used handlines with I guess 10lb line and a 3.0 hook and fill the bag up between the three of us. We sat dockside and when we caught we'd throw the fish over our shoulders to stun it and then break its neck. In the morning around 4am we'd go to the 'Chute' where the Castle Line ships would dump all the left over food from the night before and catch the larger Elf. When we got home, we'd gut the fish, put them on a stringer and sell them. Next time when you catch fresh, fillet them, season them and shallow fry them. Best eating ever.
That’s a cool little story mate! I think quite a lot of anglers can say they grew up doing these sort of bread and butter style of fishing! Such a great species to learn and hone your skills with!!

Hi Sammy if you get a plastic container with a screw on lid, shell your pipis and add a fair bit of salt and they keep in the fridge forever and stay on the hook so much better, great beach bait.

I like the lead up to the moons mate, but they literally turn up whenever they want. Generally whenever the bait is around 👌👌

FYI pretty sure your rod setup may be illegal as my old man had a similar setup and we looked into it and QLD rules have outlawed certain rod holder setups.
I think it’s only the amount of rod that they may not like?
