In this video I remove the dial from a Model 500 rotary telephone to replace the dial number card.
The telephone in this video is a 1968 ITT Model 500 with two lines. The transparent knob on the bottom left of the telephone switches between the two lines.

Wow. Thanks so much. I'm an old telephone repairman, retired after 42 years. But I guess I'm not "old" enough. These phones were before my time. I snagged an old 550 5 line office phone early in my career destined for a dumpster. An old timer rewired it for modular service for me and I've had it for years. Mainly as a conversation piece. I've had it for decades and the dust under the dial graveled my ass. And I never could figure out how to remove the dial. The old guys I knew that had that knowledge have either passed on or have forgotten. Thanks for the video. 10 minutes and my phone looks presentable again! (Just subscribed BTW!)

Wow!! Awesome information! In my case the phone works, but I can’t call anyone. It seems like in mine the rotation is slower. What do I do?

Is that really a model 500? It looks like it has two lines based on the white line switch bottom left?

It doesn't work for me. I can put the pin in and hear it click but can't turn it to remove it. Tried it five times.

Looks like my phone but mine has a metal finger plate and no little hole... Any recommendations?

I don't have a phone with a metal finger plate, but I know there are a few different configurations of them. Check out this page. popmodec.com/f/how-to-remove-your-telephone-dial-card It doesn't have a lot of detailed information, but it covers a few different types of dials. It could give you a starting point to finding out more on your specific type of dial. Good luck!

I’ve seen several of these removal videos now. This one showed such great promise because this is the first one which had the demonstration without the card in the way. I thought, finally, someone’s going to show exactly what you need to press down on by showing a very clear close up of the metal part being pressed to release the plastic dial. But alas. No close up whatsoever. People cannot see (at least on their phones where the vast majority of people watch CZcams) what is being done any better than if the card was in the way to block the view of what is being done. Would love to see you zoom in very close either during the removal (through the transparent plastic), or zoom in very close right after removal and reenact pressing down on the metal part to show exactly how it works. Surely, this would help many people who actually own tools figure out a better tool to use than a safety pin or paper clip. I’m in the process of buying a high quality cinema camera to start making videos for CZcams. But, I have way too many needed videos ahead of a dial removal demonstration to make the needed demonstration this year. If you can, please do a re-shoot based upon the feedback. Always include demonstrations with adequate close ups showing people like they’re five (years old), always try to suggest better, more effective tools for the job (perhaps in addition to the makeshift tool that may be needed in a pinch), and then always explain things at least once, even if very quickly, like we’re five. You can always explain it and show it in a more advanced way also, but don’t forget to also at least quickly cover it in very basic, easy terms. If you make your videos this way, even if the very basic demonstration or explanation is very fast (without you taking too much time or lingering on it-because people can rewind), you will have the world’s best “how to” videos. Here’s wishing you all the best. I think you have the makings of a great CZcamsr. Your video was still the best one of all those I watched on the topic. I’m going to go home and watch your video on a bigger screen to see if I can determine what is being done. My fully restored rotary phone was relatively expensive and in a rare, hard-to-find color. But, it appears the clear plastic dial may have shifted or been pressed down unevenly during shipping and is not rotating smoothly on the initial turn from the 7, 8, 9, and 0 holes around toward the metal stop/catch. I want to remove the clear plastic dial itself to examine it better, but I’m still reluctant to start haphazardly jamming sharp objects into the hole given that there could be a misalignment already and that a pin could scratch up the underlying plastic for all I know (even if the area which may potentially get scratched will be covered up).

Thanks for the kind words and great advice! I'm not a real phone collector. I only have a couple that I've got for nostalgic reasons. I just used the method in this video that I saw my parents use when I was a kid. If you need any better pictures to help troubleshoot your problem, email me at the address on the Shacking Off CZcams homepage. I'll see what I can do.
If it is not an ITT model, I may not be able to help. -Norm

Try try again. Some of the springs under the dial can be a bit hard to to push down. You can see in this video that it took me a couple of goes at the spring to get it to release. And, I even practiced a bunch before I filmed this:)
