- Jeff Tweedy, author of “World Without A Song,” tells Stephen that his book wouldn’t have worked if he didn’t list some songs that he’s not fond of, even if that meant taking shots at beloved icons like Dolly Parton.

Dolly is a national treasure she can sing as long as she wants
I agree.
I agree. We all agree. Jeff Tweedy agrees.
But if I Will Always Love You comes on the radio, he switches to a different station. So do I. So do I think most people.
But if Jolene comes on, well that’s different.
@@ChanceTheGardenerrrdisagree. Dolly’s I Will Always Love You is superior
You clearly didnt comprehend what he was saying.
@@BoringTroublemaker superior to what?
I can already hear Dolly laughing about it and being a witty trooper about it when she will be asked about this.
Dolly Parton is the first person to laugh with you if you joke about her music. She is the incarnation of good.
Is there anything Colbert **doesn't** know?! E.g.: Tweedy:"I'm not a big fan of [The Beatles'] 'Ob-La-di.'" Colbert, quick as greased lightning: "Neither was John [Lennon]." He's a walking encyclopedia, this man. So, yeah, Paul, "Please **do** come back on the show." Colbert deserves it!
I love how when Steven puts people on the spot, he says their full name. And that way you cannot deny that he’s talking to you.
The spamming in the comments section is nauseating. 🤬😡 I've been reporting it but it just keeps coming back. Someone needs to moderate Stephen's youtube channel and set the comments to filter out words like "Amazon"! 🤮 Wish I could do it myself.
Good point
Yeah I’m reporting the spam as well it’s so annoying
I wish we could filter out all non-relevant comments like those complaining about other comments 😮

11 albums later, and this guy dresses like a shade tree mechanic. Love you, Mr. Tweedy.
'Cause nobody gets into the arts to have to worry about what they wear. (I know, there are holes in my theory!) Love the guy, too!
Funny you should say this; when I first fell in love with Jeff and Wilco, I read that he dressed like he was in high school and his mother picked out his clothes LOL. He's amazing.
@Jojoseahorse Shit my mom picked out my clothes. Then it just got to the point where I wore blue jeans or khakis and a t-shirt. I've never been stylish and never really cared to be. The thing is... for a man of his status, he's not wearing a $2k jacket on a interview. Which in my opinion is pointless. Just saying. Realist dude ever.
And the way his hat stands up like a garden gnome's.... awesome :)@@user-ud6zu5tx4q
“One Sunday Morning” is a song that makes me cry. The repetitive melody, the soft percussion and especially the voice. Also my lived experience of leaving church and the passing of my eldest brother years ago. I guess I listen to this song as a eulogy.
That song really touches me, too
A thing of beauty
It's so cool to see someone just act like a regular imperfect human, who isn't all bright and shiney, doing an interview like this. And Stephen just let's him be him and doesn't force in the funny, he just sprinkles it on top gently and with such amazing ease. Really enjoyed this
NEVER MESS WITH DOLLY
music cuts across intellect and goes straight to primal instinct ... there are many songs, like many you talk about covering, from periods in my life that still create such a massive good feeling from their associations
This interview is about it being ok to have an unpopular opinion because it's just a personal opinion. He's actually not demanding others feel the same way he does.
Exactly, what is Dolly doing writing hit songs? She shouldn't have written I Will Always Love You and then her manager at the time wouldn't have let her go from her contract, and her career would have died an early death.
Always take career advice from the guy who evidently camped out in front of the theater the night before. His life choices are clearly SOLID.
Oof, and he never liked the Beatles song "Oob La Di". You mean Ob La Di? Yeah, you clearly listened to it a lot when you can't even pronounce the song title/chorus.
Dude's done fine. Don't take it so personally.
Clearly. 30 year music career, multiple albums and awards.
He probably just flew in from Chicago, where is from and still lives, hence the hat.
@@chasing8405 Yeah, you can do the same about not taking it personally. Jeff Tweedy can give criticism, then he can take it.
@@tompatchak8706 Yeah, Dolly has had an almost 60 year music career, multiple albums, awards, an acting career, a theme park, and ongoing humanitarian efforts. But Dude has had half her length of career, now makes a living criticizing other people's work and can't even take off his hat and run a brush through his hair when he's going to be on TV. It's wild that famous men can put zero effort into what they do and feel like they have any room to criticize women more successful than them. He could have at least made a minimal effort to like he gave a sh*t.
Dolly's recording of "I Will Always Love You" is gentle and touching. Whitney Houston's version is a jackhammer on my skull.
Yeah, I agree Dolly’s original is better than Whitney’s dumb diva cover. But the song is not a masterpiece-Jolene is the killer. I don’t even think Dolly thinks that highly of it. And before anyone presumes Jeff is being a jerk, he’s 10 times as critical of his own work.
Agreed! Whitney butchered a masterpiece.
Dolly's was great and she's an AMAZING song writer, but that song was perfectly crafted for Whitney Houston, and her beautiful and powerful voice did Dolly's song justice. Also, Whitney Houston wasn't a "Diva" and didn't do unnecessary trills, or overdo notes, runs, or riff when she recorded this song, that was only done later in live performances. And to the person who wrote that, the term "Diva" itself as an insult, is really sexist and annoying just f.y.i.
He means she should have stopped that day, not forever.
Exactly! What is wrong with these people?? 😂
Jeff looks like he should be panhandling in front of the theater.
A friend described my look as 'like an unemployment from the 1930s'
(English was not her first language)
What are you talking about?! He wore his best janitor's uniform!!
He does. It's strange the choices people make.
Maybe not a surprise that Jeff and Patti Smith are two of my favourites; dressed down chic
I totally understand what he is saying. Even my most favorite bands recorded songs I just can't listen to.
Even though I don't agree with his opinion about a bunch of song I do agree that all songs in an album are not always great.
Also, it's refreshing hearing someone NOT liking all songs and saying it openly
I remember seeing Wilco at the Lockn' Festival, I think 2014. They followed Willie Nelson, on a stage next to the one Willie just finished up on. Willie and band weren't even off the stage yet, and Tweedy opens the set with something like "let's hear it for Willie Nelson. An American treasure. But honestly, don't you feel like you just heard Whiskey River 15 times in a row?" Ouch!
I came across this clip, saw the guy, and wondered who he was. Then you tell about Jeff bad mouthing Willie. And I thought, “Yeah, buddy, and I don’t even know who the f¥ck who you are.” Maybe he should keep his thoughts to himself. Rude little dude isn’t he?
He’s an angry, jealous manchild. He’s bitter about being so forgettable. 😂
@@jayneneewing2369No, he's not. He's a total gent. He knows Willie Nelson, Wilco recorded one of their albums at Willie Nelson's studio; it's hilarious that someone would form a negative opinion on someone from a second hand story from someone they don't know that states "he said something like..." Yup, if you say so then he must be an asshole... My mind is made up. 🙄
@@jayneneewing2369 I don't like the cute fake edginess. I know what it's like to REALLY take a stand for an unpopular view and put yourself on the line in front of power and take the risk. @yogsenforfoth5948 Tweets' S point exactly. He spoke of how a song resonates for him and suggests that that is how it works for everyone. Bypasses reasoning and gets you where you live. In other words, it's personal for everybody. That's how music works.
I remember when I was in college and only a few people knew who Wilco the band was but almost everyone loved them when they heard them. Great band
I remember when i was in college in the 90's, this awesome guy and wilco showed up at some country rinky-dink bar near kutztown PA to play. So. Very. Cool. 🥰
Saw them open for the Jayhawks in, I believe, 1995. I went mostly to see Wilco. Great show. :D
The version sung by Dolly doesn't hold out the I-eee-I like the more well known version as recorded by Whitney Houston. Far be it from me to criticize the late Whitney Houston, her voice was magic on that song and in general, but I do agree that not going I-eeee-I at the beginning of the chorus would have been a better choice.
When Whitney’s version of that song came out, I thought “Why is she yodeling like Tarzan?”
I chalked it up to her still being young in her career, and doing that song, and that way, was bad advice from a manager.
@@timtibbitts1017 Whitney did great...until that warble at the end. Ruined it

Yeah, Tweedy must be conflating the original with this well known cover. Parton doesn't drag out the 'I' at all, and the song is much better for it.
Well, that's one book I definitely won't be reading.

notes for each, Stephen and Jeff; The 10 cc album was "the original soundtrack" and the annoying melisma in "I will always love you" was Whitney's introduction, not representative of the original version by Dolly.
People should be allowed to dislike certain songs. But surely one can find some Beatles songs that work.
And though I like Dolly's version of I Will Always...., the more famous version was overblown and horrendous.
Dolly wrote the song.
I like Dolly's music, but 'I will always love you' is NOT one of my favorites

I've always beaten myself up for not loving nearly as much music w/female vocals as I do male vocals, like it made me a bad woman (Idk I've never told anyone this 😂 it sounds so stupid!) So when Jeff Tweedy spoke on how he as a musician sometimes dislikes songs that do things he cannot do, I felt so much better. I ❤singing, and do so constantly (poorly), but I am a true alto. Most women sing waaaay too high for my squeakiest squawk. I'm not a musician - I also play the piano poorly, but my limited ability does not mean I cannot eventually hit the right notes, but no amount of work is going to allow me to sing along with a lot of women whose music I love but just cannot sing along with at all.
