    I have just got an F5 and absolutely love it! I did pay more than a few 00 quid though. Using it is not really any different from holding my D6 and the layout is so similar. The build quality as you say is outstanding and although heavy fits well in the hand. I may never use the 8 frames/second capability but nice to know its there.

      Totally agree! I love the F5 so much... just a perect 35mm camera

    I don’t ever leave batteries in my F5. Corrosion is not fun to deal with….

    I love being able to use my gelded lenses on it. Went out to finish off a roll at a nearby park today. Had the f5 and my d850 on my desk. Got there and crap, mistakenly grabbed the d850 they are so similar. 1/8000 sec? 8 fps. Auto focus with D and G lenses. Focus confirmation arrows and meatball for my zeiss manual focus glass. Yes, it's heavy, so got a black rapid strap and don't even notice it now. My meter works same as on my d700/ 850. I love this camera. Got it for Kodak vision 3.

      The F5 is a wonderful camera that just simply was ahead of it's time and is a tire workhorse camera, I don't think I will ever sell it as it is just so useful with all Nikon lenses I know and how well it renders images is just amazing!!

    I just picked up an F5 recently. I am astounded with its build. If you could tell me how you go about filming as you walk. What camera? It looks simply brilliant. Oh yes, congratulations in your purchase my friend. Cheers!

      Thanks for the comment, the Nikon F5 is an amazing camera, and is built like a tank! - I use my phone for filming on a gorilapod to attached to trees etc.

    I agree with everything you say about the F5 except that it isn't actually compatible with all F-mount lenses. Aside from the fact that DX lenses are designed for smaller sensors than 35mm film, my Nikon 24-70 F2.8 FX lens doesn't work, due, I believe, to its having an electronically controlled diaphragm. I had to get hold of an older Nikon 35-70 lens to solve that. And as you say - a digital camera that just happens to use film.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před 4 měsíci +1

      That seems odd as I have used the F5 with my new G version 50mm f/1.4, 200mm f/2, and 600mm f/4 all that habe electric diaphragms ans they have all worked perfectly... It might have been a contacts issue with lens to camera rather than actual control, but we will never know as you don't have it anyone.
      But the F5 is an amazing camera, that I just love to bits!

    Portra 800 is probably my favourite film. It's insane how much it costs though.
    BTW, if you do another video about the F5, I'd like to hear how the silent mode compares to the standard single frame mode. Is it similar to the F4 in that regard?

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před rokem

      yes, I really did love the colours of Portra 800 and I think it's quite silent for a SLR... Might do a sound check one-day

    Hi Sebastian, I have an F100 but the autofocus doesn't work on the 24-70 2.8 VR. 70-200 ok but not sure about the 200-500.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před rokem

      Im not too sure on the F100... I mean it should take all the Nikon lenses fine, but can't speak too much about it as I have no personal experience with one - I'd say give it a try if you have the lens already or if not rent one and find out first

      @@SebastianOakley I spoke to this guy re the problem: Frank J. Papp
      Unfortunately "E" lenses aren't fully compatible with the F100 or any other film camera, even the F6. They will work but you can only shoot at maximum aperture.
      There is a rough hack however. If you mount the lens to your D850, stop down to say f/5.6, press the depth of field preview button, then dismount the lens while holding the button, you can then mount it on the F100 but it will stay at f/5.6.

      @@johneast7987 Ah, I wasn't thinking E Nikon lenses, that would be why - I have never used any of them as I find the normal DSLR lenses to be amazing

    Any tips for a F5 that will not power up even with new batteries? The battery tray and compartment show no corrosion or damage. The camera body appears in good shape, no obvious dents, or damage. The film compartment looks clean also.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank for the comment - sounds silly but have you checked that you have the batteries in the right way in the tray? - also check the date on your batteries (yes they have a sell by date) apart from that I can't really help, hope you figure ot out as the F5 is an amazing camera

    Not sure I understand why you chose such a long lens an not sure why 800 ISO? I would have went with a shorter lens for most of what you shot and 160 or 120 Portra myself but that is my take. 800 would be great in lower lighting conditions. I do come from a camp of less grain over more. Just my thoughts on the subject and yes the Nikon F5, F100, N80 and others are great cameras. I'm hoping film comes back in spades and brings down the price a bit but there is always bulk loading if you want to shoot allot for less. Something I did as a kid in the 70's when it was cheap.

    I found the D5 just too heavy for me so ended up with the F100 instead. Pretty much the same functionality with less weight and I have the battery pack for the rare occasion it’s needed.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před rokem +2

      Yes the F100 is an amazing camera and as you just is just an F5 in a smaller body. I went with the F5 as I liked the big grip and it's workhorse pro style body, but your right it is heavy, bit for me the images it produces outweighs the weight to me

    • @Nick_r
      @Nick_r Před rokem +2

      I thought image wise they looked pretty much the same using the same lens on both. I guess the slightly better metering in the F5 makes a difference in difficult situations though. I’m more into landscapes so don’t need the higher burst speed that you action folk need. To be honest my F2 and F3 produce equally as good images, it’s basically down to good glass and good composition at the end of the day.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  Před rokem +2

      Indeed glass wins the day, everyday!

    • @Nick_r
      @Nick_r Před rokem +2

      I forgot to mention, for those who aren’t aware. If you are a Nikon dslr user and want to try film work, the F100 and F5 are pretty much the same as the Nikon digital professional models, e.g, D810, D5 etc.etc. You hardly notice the difference at all apart from the lack of an lcd to review the image.
