Well, if they can’t keep their arms outside the tail, they’re definitely not ready.
I also agree about putting them in leggings and flippers first. I started with a monofin, but I was also 36 and had been swimming since I was 3. And I knew to keep my arms free at all times.

As a lifeguard, I saw so many kids struggling to swim in monofins and tailskins, and was even involved in a few rescues because of them. Even if kids are strong swimmers, they should NOT have them!!! One of the rescues I performed was of a very strong swimmer, 10-12, whose goggles came loose. She freaked out and because of the monofin and tailskin she was wearing, she almost drowned.
Parents also love to get their kids just the tailskins with no monofins, which is one of the most stressful things I have ever seen. Even when kids are obviously struggling, parents will not intervene and will not listen to warnings.
Mermaiding of all kinds is a legitimate skill and one that requires knowledge of emergency protocol and emergency drills.
I don't like preventing people from participating in things they have a legitimate interest in, but as a matter of safety, I don't think anyone under 10 should have a monofin or tailskin, and anyone under 15 would be a special circumstance for strong swimmers who would be constantly observed and be trained. I am personally so glad that I did not get my first monofin until I was 18.

Inside Edition, literally a 0 out of 10 on this one. They didn't cover this topic well at all, didn't bother to reach out to professional companies, mermaids, or trainers. I don't even believe the instructor in the pool has ever taught someone in a tail or monofin before based on all I saw. So frustrating and gross. Pools should have a set of skills they require you to test for, specific brands that are safety tested to be allowed, and making sure the swimmer speaks to the lifeguard to let them know they will be in a tail in a set area of the pool. I feel like mermaid tails can be for kids, but definitely only if they know what they’re doing. I personally I got my first mermaid tail when I was 10 (a fin fun of course), as a prize for finishing the most difficult level of swimming lessons that were offed at my pool. However, being the ravenclaw 10 year old I was, I did EXTENSIVE research before I swam in my tail, I cannot tell you how many websites I read, and CZcams videos I watched, most of them being fin fun’s. So then when I started swimming I began with the tail skin on instead of just using the mono fin, but because I was a good swimmer and had done plenty of research on mermaiding, swimming in it my first time was a lot easier than I thought it would be because I had practiced the dolphin kick and done all of the mermaid tail ready things. And that is how it should be (in my opinion), you should already be such a good swimmer and so ready for a tail that you can have a really positive first experience when swimming in your mermaid tail for the first time.

    • @CourtneyMermaid

  • @23skiddsy6
    @23skiddsy6 Před rokem +21

I would argue you not only need a strong dolphin kick to start, you need sculling skills and being able to move around both above and below the surface with your arms alone. I see so many young swimmers that obviously use frog kicks in order to turn. Not ready!
And floats and arm treading are so crucial.
Mermaiding is advanced swimming, just as SCUBA is. I'm glad I had SCUBA experience before coming to mermaiding. So much is applicable across these. I had so many safety drills and requirements for floating and swimming a distance unaided. Even just clearing my ears.

Ok. I’m a new mermaid, I own a knock off tail but I do NOT use the monofin it came with, I use a fin fun still, I did my extensive research on how to swim in a tail, how to clean and take care of one, every bit of safety. I may have quickly jumped into using my monofin, but it’s because I knowledgeably knew what to do in one, I learned everything I could before I even had an opportunity to hit a pool /for three to four years/ this horrifies me, as someone in the uk, where all indoor pools don’t allow tails already, there is only one pool I can go to with my fin. This is due to parents who don’t do their research. My dad who bought my tail, even kept telling me I need to swim strongly in the water before I even touch my tail. I am thankful for that so much to this day.

In the summer about a year ago I was swimming in one of my FinFolk tails at a public pool and noticed a really young girl wearing a finfun tail.
At first I was delighted to see a young swimmer, but noticed she was really struggling to swim. Upon closer inspection I saw she had the tail skin on, but absolutely 0 monofin in it.
So I tracked down her mother (who was sitting well outside the pool area mind you) and told her off for letting her unattended child swim without a monofin.
I tried to educate her about safely swimming in a tail and she seemed to just brush it off.
So instead I talked to the child, who listened INTENTLY and absorbed the information. When I was leaving the little girl thanked me for explaining things, and promised she wouldn't wear her tail until she could swim better and use a monofin.

I have NO idea what they were thinking by having her arms in the tail. Like...mermaids have arms! Why would you have your arms in the tail skin?! And it seemed like niether of these people were familiar with training mers. The lifeguard didn't cover the steps to learning to mermaid at all, and they skipped all the steps necessary to be proficient in a tail. I'm guessing they've seen other people come in with tail skins but are not familiar with the training and build up we go through before letting ANYONE (adults included i do this with my friends when i introduce them to mermaiding, we practice the dolphin kick when they're comfortable with that THEN we try a monofin, just the monofin) into a tail skin. The following year I bought a magictail with a mahina, which I love, and also now have a mermaid inc tail. I was already a strong swimmer and I started learning to swim as a baby. But safety is important. When I've been out swimming I've had people ask people if it helps me swim and I'm like no if you can't swim, you'll drown. Hi Courtney, I just want to come straight off the bat and say how thankful I am to you and your channel. I’m 20 years old but I only started Properly mermaiding this year when I found your channel and began educating myself on mermaiding. I own two monofins, A Mahina and a Lucia, and a Tailskin from Nereid studios, I did own two but the first one was an amazon knock off so we don’t talk about that. My first ever fin was a pair of diving flippers strapped together with duct tape🙅‍♀…that I used for the first time ever at a surf beach🤦‍♀…I never said I was perfect. Every time someone asks me about mermaiding for themselves or their little one I immediately point to your channel as the place to go cause It’s personally helped me so much.
I am so glad you covered this video, I came across it about 5 months ago and left a comment under it with my very strong opinions that align perfectly with yours (I also linked a couple of your videos in it too) as well as some resources for parents looking at purchasing tails for their kids (Like FinFun and Linden) hoping that’d usher them away from the mistake I made, disastrously cheap Amazon alternatives. I don’t think anyone saw it but that’s okay, it was one amongst a sea of other outraged merfolk.
Another thing that really bothered me about that interview is that the swim instructor had absolutely no experience with mermaid tails and you could very much tell. But because she’s a “professional swimming instructor” People will take her word without doing any research of their own. Very much boils my blood because there is just SO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE!
I'm in New Zealand and the video shown at 2:14 happened here and, although it was filmed in a home pool, the repercussions of that incident was ALL pools in New Zealand banned mermaid tails and only a handful allow monofins. Which really sucks because now my pod/group have to swim in places that are safe for us because we know how to be safe, but unsafe for people who look at us, don’t ask questions, don’t do research and just throw their kids in after. Our favorite spot to swim is an old Quarry that’s open to the public as a swim spot but is very very deep (more than 50ft potentially) I sat down with a family at one of our meets who had a little girl (about 7) who was beaming like I’d never seen before because she got to meet a real mermaid, she and her family really wanted to know how she could be just like me, the relief I felt when they asked me for information, and the opportunity I took to really drill it into them that it’s going to take a lot of time, practice and trust/responsibility and that as her parents they can’t just hand her a full silicone tail one morning and throw her in head first they need to ensure she knows the basics "dolphin kick < Flippers < Monofin < more monofin practice

I was a strong swimmer but I wanted to feel safe while wearing my tail. And i am SO glad that I practiced and waited. If I hadn’t, who knows what could have happened!!

I wholeheartedly agree Courtney, proper research SHOULD be done even before considering purchasing a mermaid tail, and yes, the idea of getting someone used to the idea of having the lower extremity of the body bound in cloth and the feet secured by a device around the ankles should also be carefully considered as well. If they try it and don't like it, like you said, take small steps until the person in question gets used to it, then and only the proceed further, accidents, close calls in the water is NOT a joke as you said, drowning is a terrifying experience, and no one needlessly needs to experience it.
Keep on coming with these vidoes Courtney, love your work, and keep swimming!

I started with the FinFun monofin first and after a few minutes I put on the tail skin as well. I found it very easy to swim in a tail simply because I had swum dolphin style for so long playing mermaids with my friends. If you are not extremely comfortable with the dolphin kick and can do it as easily as doggy paddle you need to practice before you put on a tail. The key to swimming in a tail is knowing how to float and being very good at dolphin kick

Oh my gosh this is SO FRUSTRATING! Like. Omg. WHY ARE HER ARMS INSIDE THE FREAKING TAIL!!! I feel like they are doing that JUST to make it look more dangerous. Like YES tail swimming can be dangerous, even with the proper skills, even with a buddy or two, but so are all other sports! Parents need to just be informed and make sure their kids are being safe about it. We teach football players in high school how to tackle with minimal damage to one another. We teach runners how to stretch and the proper form while jumping. We teach our athletes how to do their sport the right way, so why are parents throwing their kids in pools with mermaid tails, and leaving them uninstructed and unattended??? I really just don't get it and I am BEYOND frustrated. I'm right there with you Courtney.

This is so late but I’m a lifeguard, swim instructor and a mermaid! Tails for kids (and weak swimmers in general) are an absolute no go! Safety always comes first. Always!!
We used some of my tails for a holiday pool party recently. it was just me and other instructors, all certified lifeguards, using them. Some of them told me how they didn’t like the drag, how weird it was swimming bound by a monofin, and even how exhausting it was- we were using finfun tails! Imagine how hard that is for CHILDREN. Seeing clips like you showed makes my blood boil 🙄 don’t know how you didn’t combust!

I'm an adult who grew up in Florida with a pool in my backyard. I practiced dolphin kicking without fins for probably a year before moving to fins. Then took a while before ordering a tail. I still choked and nearly drowned just removing my Luna a few months back. That video had me just as mad as you.
I'm pretty sure the reasoning behind her arms being in there was the tail being too big for her and it would've slipped off otherwise. But that swim instructor!!! Wtaf was she thinking???

I wonder if they were actually trying to reference what happened in the Annabelle incident, but that was with a 5 year old, not a 7 year old, and in a super shallow pool. I'm also still hung up on how Annabelle actually got her arms in her tail... Like has anyone actually tried this without help? It's actually not that easy (if you are using a good quality, properly sized tail).

When I was little (about 12, not little little) , I got a finfun monofin and tail skin and tried them out in the kids pool (ofc only monofin at first) where I could have my hands at the bottom and my shoulders above the surface. I learned how to do the dolphin kick and practiced it in the same place. I admit I didn't get lessons with it or anything, but I was a quick learner and put my safety first and though nothing bad happened, I regret it now. I should have learned about it first. Then I got worried if people in my school would bully me if they saw me mermaiding and I stopped and sold my tail and monofin. Now I'm planning on getting an adult size monofin and maybe a tail skin and start again, with much more learning beforehand of course. Thank you for this video and education about mermaiding safety.

I agree 100% with you. When I see articles like these, it makes me angry.
A really nice pool 20 min from me said no to tails immediately when a girl, whom didnt swim very well prior, put a mermaid tail on that she got as a present/gift, and jumped into the water and almost drowned. Now the pool (all pools around me don't allow tails) does not allow tails at all even with a swim test.
It takes 1 incident can immediately make the pools say no to tails. If people are gonna get someone a tail, at least make sure they know how to swim properly before the tail.

I swam in shallow waist deep water in my monofin for the first 2yrs at the start of my mermaid hobby in 2014. And always chose the lane closest to where the lifeguards always stand on duty, which was the wall lane. Only after I was comfortable with the whole swimming thing and having my face underwater, did I don a tail. And still, I swam in the shallow end until I felt comfortable with the tail AND fin, did I go into the deep end of the pool. Fast forward to today, I cringe whenever I see youtube videos of kids, never having swam, never used a monofin let alone bi-fins (flippers), going into the deep end struggling to swim in their cheap knockoff tails that their parents bought for them. Or people, mentioning in their videos, not supposed to hop in their tails, but they still hop and some fall over. Its just... ugh! Like you said, it will only take one person to spoil it all for the rest of us.

I watched every review, tutorial, safety instruction video and I finally got one when I was 16 lol. It was a FinFun knockoff, but it’s what my mom could afford at the time. I swam with a dolphin kick for years even before getting a tail. And luckily I am an excellent swimmer. I’ve had flippers too. But even I have struggled at times, especially in the beginning but at least I did it right. My dad, poor thing, tried his best when I was like 8. He got a cheap $50 tail that claimed to be swimmable but literally had a sewn in fin and was basically just a Halloween costume you couldn’t even walk in. Luckily I didn’t drown and it was so big on me it would fall off in the water. At that age I really didn’t know better but at least I’m still alive and learned mermaid tail safety. (Don’t worry, I taught my parents safety too)

Anyone with common sense knows you need to train to be a strong swimmer, train with the monofin and how to get out of it if in trouble - same goes with the tailskin - and to do your research. :(
This is just negligence of the parents and the trainer!
And what trainer puts the arms into the skin?!?! What mer-creature has no arms - sea snakes. "Swim like Ariel" - SHE HAS ARMS.
This is just going to make it even harder for those of us who swim efficiently in monofins/full mermaid tail. Australia already has tight rules for not allowing to swim in a pool with monofins let alone tailskin because of news articles/parents like this. I have asked time and time again if I could swim at quiet hours when there are less people, hire a private lane, prove I can swim with a monofin & tailskin every time I go - still no. There is no actual law for us to not use a monofin/tailskin - yet its been banned at many pools for safety reasons. I have been lucky to swim at an ocean pool, yet when it's winter I'd prefer to swim in a local pool.
